I have just finished watching the game on replay and have taken a few things away from it.

1. We really lack another presence up forward. To be realistic, Fev was well beaten today, because he had three players on him all the time. 4 of he's goals came from free kicks and one was a gimmie by the umpire.

I think we really need another Tall forward in there which is damaging, other than Santanta. So Harts this week maybe?

I noticed that because we lacked that extra tall up forward melbourne was able to rebound the ball fairly easily. If it wasn't for their terrible disposal, this could of hurt on the scoreboard.

2. Our clearance work has really improved and I think is our biggest advantage atm. Cloke was terrific and so was Judd and Hadley in those tight contests.

3. Judd had the highest disposals at 26 for us, all of our other mids shared the footy around and averaged on around 23. I believe this is a good sign for us. I tend to think it means that, a. we are sharing the ball around between our mids and rotating through the middle, and b. our disposal is imporoving and become more effiecient and thus reducing the number of disposals we are havin per game.

4. Our defence is looking better and better each week. Guys like Bower and Jamo are really gaining confidence.

5. I thought Russel did some good things, for me he keeps improving every game. I was more disappointed with the effort of Sentanta, Grigg, Bentick and even Simo. Kade took some massive steps last year, and this year so far I feel he has gone a little backwards.

Overall a win is a win, but I am disappointed we were unable to run out a full 4 quarters. We will need to play with the same intensity with which we did against Collingwood if we are to be competitive with Adelaide this week.

As long as we keep improving week to week, you can't really ask for more than that.

Ins this week....Gibbs, Harts
outs................bentick, Sentanta.

Agree wholeheartedly with the changes.

Setanta has run his race for the next couple of weeks.

Bit harsh on Grigg though - thought he was pretty instrumental early with his run out of defence. (Disposal still questionable).

Melbourne played negative football by flooding our forward line and triple teaming Fevola. They had five players across the half forward line to stop his leads, and by simple fact that they had so many in defense, none of our forwards had much of a chance in the congestion. You would have noticed we had a whole wing to ourselves, mainly because they pushed their team back in defense.

Melbourne also only kicked 10 goals, five in the last quarter after they loosened up their defense and moved more players forward.

So, there's not much wrong with our forward structure. Fisher, O'hAilpin, Kreuzer were all up there and did good things, we were just slowed down by Melbourne's flood.

Oh, and I agree on Russell. I watched the replay again and saw him present and be an effective player with good disposal. I also saw him burst into a pack and win the ball.

In all I think we were a little flat after the monumental effort we put in last week. We were physically and emotionally drained so it wsa good to have a relatively soft opposition to let us get our breath back.

I agree with your thread, besides Fev being beaten. He got those free kicks because Carrol kept butchering him. If an umpire rewards Fev a free kick, then it must me a free kick, because lets face it, umps don't really like Fev. But our midfield and defense is coming along nicely. But we do need another key forward, someone like Bradshaw from Brisbane would slot in very nicely...

The last quarter fade out was unacceptable. 4 goals we kicked in a half and Fev kicked 3 of them.

However the Juvola ( Yes thats what I call this pair) Are part of something special with the development being shown around the team.

You are right in that Fev. rarely, if ever gets the 50-50 free kick. It has to very obvious before he gets one.

I'm sorry, but did you actually watch the game?

You don't get "well beaten" when you kick seven goals. He had two free kicks that resulted in goals, not four and one of them was clearly there when Carroll grabbed a hold of him and took him high in a marking contest.

Fev beaten you are beating your self off - he snagged 7 in a good performance and only 2 goals were from frees, 2 from general play and 3 from marks! His froward line pressue and 1 chase towards our bench that he gain possession off lead to a Fisher mark and goal at the Punt Rd end.

I agree though with your assessment of another tall forward and the much needed hardness that Cloke and Hadley have brought to the team.

Disagree. Grigg is so far off the pace it isn't funny. Continually looks to go backwards, vision is terrible and has zero confidence. At one point took a mark at centre half back, played on, saw an opposition player and turned to run the opposite direction, feel over and got caught for holding the ball. I shudder every time the ball is in his hands.

Forget all that though - what about the juddy sidestep to on the chest of fev - sensational.

I think people need to lay off grigg a bit - i mean what is it his tenth game if that - he has that ability you can't teach - he finds the ball - had a reasonable first half - although i think he is still adjusting to the pace of the game - and his disposal definately needs work, but lets face it hes not alone there.

All in all happy with the game - i thought our hrdenss and tackling dropped of a bit, but lets see what happens next week.

fev well beaten> ur kidding urself 7 goals been triple teamed is as good as it gets

It was good to get a win, but still some concerning signs.

At the game, we looked very flat (juddy aside). The only time we started firing up was after the little melee and what happened? We kicked 7 on the trot or something.

I'm also concerned with our delivery into the forward line (again, Judd aside). Despite winning most clearances and getting people into space around 50, we seemed to lack a flat penetrating delivery into the forwrad line....there were far to many balls that sat up.

I'd also be worried about our inability to finish Melbourne off....Would love to have seen us flog them.

Wasn't that Bower?

Regardless of whether it was Bower or not, I agree that Grigg seems to lack confidence and has ever since he made his debut at AFL level. Don't know how he looks in the VFL, but if the confidence is a problem only at AFL level, then I'd keep him in and give him the opportunity to get over his nerves, because he does have potential.

what about Bower confidence!!!!

see the kid baulk his way out of traffic in the backline

was something to behold.....the kid is great to watch!!!

I to am a fan of Paul Bower. I even have him on my Facebook ;) He gives it 100% each game. And in the last 3games hasnt really been beaten. some stupid decision making, but if he is going to get dropped for that, then you might as well drop 25% of Carltons team..

I'm glad I'm not the only one who confuses Grigg and Bower. They look remarkably similar some times, when running one way, changing direction, getting tackled and then standing on the mark.

Bower really takes the game on. He's well worth persisting with. He gets himself into terrible trouble sometimes, but hey, so does Waite. I think the pros outweigh the cons, and both of those guys will make better decisions as they play more games as part of a settled backline.

Grigg I just don't know about. I don't know what he is, what he brings to the table. Is he a tall or a small? Is he fast? Is he strong? I know for a fact he can't make a decision to save himself. He gets asked "do you want fries with that?" and stands there umming and uhhing until someone crash tackles him.

If you take Juddy out of the equation Hadley would be the best pre season recruit of any team.

He has added a real point of difference and some of the work he does with Judd is outstanding.

Hadley will only continue to improve as it seems he has real faith in his knee.

Just a great pick-up and only 23/24. Wow

He baulked his way into trouble twice as well. He needs to learn to trust his first instinct and release the ball quicker. in saying that I am a big fan of his.

I'm not saying that Fev played a bad game, he is a superstar. All I was pointing out is that while we only him in the forward line as a target he will get tripple taken.

If he wasn't such an amazing talent he would not of kicked those two freakish goals that he did.

Melbourne were able to triple team him, due to a lack of respect for the rest of our forwards. We really need to find someone who can take the pressure off fev.

Imagine what the score would have been if they were only able to play man on man on fev.. With another tall forward contributing as well.

scary isn't it...

For Fev to kick 7 with that amount of flooding going on,by any means is sensational. Very rarely will we come across tactics to which the aim is to reduce the losing margin as much as possible.

Very disappointed with Bentick today. Many, myself included have been banging down the door for his return, and to put it bluntly, he played like a loser. Never looked to run at full pace (Houlihan-esque), second efforts were minimal, and the main aspect to which people wanted to see his return, his tackling wasn't great either. I'd be surprised to see him in next week. Will be interesting to see what happens at the end of the year, as I really doubt he has a lot of trade value.

Setanta did some nice things today, but his football brain is still very much so in developing stage. Not a bad kick over 20m surprisingly, generally always hits his targets. It's just his decision making (choosing to kick it 20m backwards to Russell with very little time left in the first quarter I think it was). I'd still have him in ahead of Hartlett for his versatility at this stage.

Russell did some good things too. Wouldn't be dropped yet. I think we're starting to realise that we need players who add that icing on the cake when we're up, as opposed to worrying about how exposed they are when we're losing.

For the life of me though, I can't work out why there's so many Russell haters on here compared to Grigg. Simply put - he can't play. Seen lost children in shopping centres with more awareness to his general surroundings than him, just as I've seen people in comas with better reaction time. He looks lost. Decision making is poor. Struggles when he has to play a contested footy. Disposal isn't so flash that we have to have him in.

I assume he'll get another week, as really, given Bannister's injury, Thornton's report, Gibbs' return, Bentick's probable axing, and the likely switch of Hartlett/o'hAilpin (not happy about that one), you don't want to have too many changes.

At this point, I'd have Wiggins in ahead of him.

when grigg and bower have the ball in hand they are as bad as each other. (it just might be the way bower runs that makes him look worse than he actually is) but bower is shaping to be a good defender and if he can sort out he's decision making will provide good run out of the backline.
I dont really see why grigg is in the side if we want a forward bring in wiggins or hartlett and the backline seems ok but with the possible outs this week may retain his spot.
