Not entirely sure how interesting or relevant these statistics are, but I find matches where both teams score 100 points to be fascinating and exciting. I've plotted each season from the AFL era into the following graphs to analyse the amount of times per season this occurrence occurs

1982: 41.30% (57/138)
1980: 35.51% (49/138)
1979: 33.33% (46/138)
1978: 31.16% (43/138)
1985: 28.71% (41/138)

Last 5 seasons:
2018: 3.38% (7/207)
2017: 3.38% (7/207)
2016: 5.80% (12/207)
2015: 3.88% (8/206)
2014: 2.90% (6/207) - lowest since 2.68% in 1966

First season with over 12%: 1934 - 12.50% (14/112)
Last season with over 12%: 2008 14.05% (26/185)

It would be more interesting if all three graph lines weren’t exactly the same “shape” but I think I can see what you’re trying to get at, which is simply a demonstration of how sharply the occurrence has fallen. Would be good to be able to correlate it with something else though.

I do enjoy looking at the figures for this sort of thing, but I'm a bit worried about your "numbers"! There's not a lot of years there where what your (first) graph seems to suggest the figure is, matches what I have. Just looking at the last five years, you have (seemingly) 6-4-9-4-5. I agree with the 2014 figure, not with any for the next four years. In 2016 there were 12 games where both teams scored 100+ points; your chart seems to indicate just 9.

Has anyone ever done the maths on how often the first team to 100 wins the game? It's the old rule of thumb that is obviously pretty accurate, and makes sense considering most teams hit 100 in the last quarter. But would be interesting to know the exact reliability.

It would be good to find the stats.

I think it was Leigh Matthews who brought it up quite often.

I mean if there were only five occasions both teams hit 100 last season then there aren’t all that many opportunities in reality for the second team to hit 100 to claw back the lead...
