Than pev would probably tag Josh Carr

Your thoughts.......

I am quite concerned about the Tarrant match up.

It's still early, but Mal hasn't looked that quick so far and Tarrant is very quick on the lead.
It really will depend on if he stays close to goal, or plays that role that he did at Collingwood where he leads right up the ground.

I would like to see Slatts on Headland, as he is pretty weak and i think he might be able to syche him out a bit.

Isn't there some doubt on Longmuir?

longmuir isn't a guarantee to play, but they will name him and give him every chance to play.

i guess fletch and mal can rotate depending on which forward is playing closer to goal.

tarrant isn't fit at the moment and against port he hardly ventured outside the forward 50.

It wouldn't surprise me if Sheeds plays Ryder on Pav early on just to give the kid a test. Sheeds has always liked to do that sort of thing.
Depending on if we then have a 'Zac Dawson-esque' situation on our hands with Pav tearing him a new one I reckon we might see McPhee go down and take him.
Although Scotty Lucas has been named in the back line again so who knows?!

i think mcphee will play forward this week and lovett-murry will play on solomon. fletch and mal can handle both key forwards i dont think it will matter who will play on who. i think ryder will either play on murphy or longmuir. dont be surprised if he does play on either of the key forwards at some stage especially if they do go right up the ground. that way fletch and mal can both stay at home. i dont mind taz and pav getting cheap kicks up on the wing

It will be interesting to see the structure they adapt. Ideally, Mal Michael could take Pavlich as he's the best suited opponent to Pavlich in a marking contest and Tarrant may be too agile for him. If Mal could take Pavlich it would open up Fletch to be the creative rebounding defender as he was last week. However, Connolly will probably play Pavlich around the forward 50 arc which means he's going to be too far up the ground for Mal to take him. In the event of that happening, it means Fletch is going to have to play the stopper role on Pavlich and sacrifice his own game to an extent. Paddy Ryder will probably get the job on Longmuir or Murphy and Mal is probably going to have to go with Tarrant. Thankfully, as previously stated in this thread, Tarrant isn't at his desired fitness and won't be pushing up the ground much and it shouldn't be beyond Mal to go with him on the lead.

it looks like that sheeds wants to use smoky up the ground this year. i'd be very surprised if he played a major defensive role

I tihnk James hird will kick 4-6 goals.....Play him on a flank all day, they can not match him up.

The run off half back is where we can win this game IMO. McPhee, Fletch, McVeigh and Dyon if he plays....as well as Stants, Winders etc dropping back....

Keep the ball moving and simply out run them through the guts and out play them in the air with our KPP's....

HF: Dean Solomon.....Matthew Pavlich......Des Headland
HB: Mark Johnson.....Mal Michael Mark McViegh

Fletch should go forward to stretch their already suspect defence.

i think we should have there forward line under control........ mal michael has almost always gone good on tarrent and fletcher is one of the best backmen in the afl along with ryder to match the height of longmuir.... good match ups... should do good

mcphee will have a creative role
mal isn't fit enough to play CHB
Fletch was great across half back so why change it???

I dunno if they'll go with Mal on Pav. Although he'd hold his own in marking contests I reckon Pav might be a bit too mobile for him around the half forward line.
I think McPhee will line up off the half back flank to give us some good run out of defense like he did last week vs. Adelaide.
It'll be interesting to see what Sheedy does with Welsh as well. I thought he looked pretty good in the forward line last week.
God I hope we win this game. I'm still looking back to last year when we were 1-0 and we all remember how that ended up don't we?
Stick it up em Dons...

Longmuir......Tarrant.....Browne
Ryder..........L-M.......Slattery

Solomon....Pavlich....Headland
McVeigh....Fletcher....McPhee

Lovett Murray can match Tarrant in the pace stakes, only concern may be strength. Fletcher can take Pav in the backline but if he goes into the middle then Smokey should pick him up, with Mark Johnson going to Headland.

The edge Tarrant would have in strength would be slight at most and I dont think he wrestles too much.

Pretty happy with most of these, but where does that leave big Mal?

We could see a situation where Fletcher and Michael switch between playing on Pavlich and Tarrant. With Michael taking whoever plays deep and Fletcher taking the opponent that pushes up the ground.

Sounds good to me. Thing with this Freo lineup is that I can't see a player that Mal could take. Most of their forwards are too quick for him.

Most of their forwards are too quick for him.

This is only a worry if our midfield pressure is non existant and they are hitting blokes lace out. Otherwise Mal's superior experience, strength and judgement should play to our advantage.

Freo can be pretty quick off half back like Adelaide so I'd like to see Welsh play HF again in a defensive role, on someone like Peake. Thought he did that well last week.

I think you underestimate how quick Mal is off the mark.

Unless they isolate their full-forward and he has an incredible amount of space then Mal is going to be fine. And Fletch is at CHB and McPhee is playing at HB then their FF isn't going to have that space to work into.

Mal can play on Pavlich or Tarrant at FB, no doubt about it.
