Re: Matthew Stokes

Top little player, gives his all every week and finds a nice amount of it. He also seems to have been something of a link/lead up player the last few weeks, which is surprising due to his size, but on several occasions he has created goals by leading up and dishing off to blokes running by or kicking nicely to Moons or another forward. Case in point, that goal versus Freo (I think) where he combined with Scarlo for a nice play down the wing/half forward area.

He brings a lot to the team and definitely in the first 18.

Re: Matthew Stokes

Well, IMO he plays wide, he isn't as quick as he sometimes looks, he's a receiver not a ball winner and he is hardly involved in winning the Cats games. He does have some great assets with his kicking being fairly accurate and has a great sense of where the goals are, but a lot of the time he is in poor position to get the crumb off a contest and he doesn't really feature until the game is already won.

I think he will get better with more games (obviously) with his positioning, but at the moment he is a fringe player and Varcoe could be back in the side any time for him.

He plays wide as per coaching instructions - when he plays the leading role, he steers clear from the (reserved) corridoor, and usually makes smart leads to the flanks.

He is both capable as a receiver and a ball winner, with his ability to do both well a strength of his. He's smart enough to sit off congested packs and wait for the quick release, but he's also (always) been prepared to throw himself in to win the contested ball.

I can't agree with the questioning over his roving ability either. He is usually thereabouts within in-play marking contests, and excels in picking off tap outs from set pieces (ball-ups/throw-ins).

Re: Matthew Stokes

Stokes is a tough little player, no questions. Up here in Darwin he comes from a good family bloodline which has produced alot of local champions, Matt is the first to really make it into the big league. The Stokes name is up there with the Longs, Rioli's.

For his position in your team he is doing a great job, you already have a galaxy of stars in the forward line so Stokes to me is the in and under, tackling, chasing 'blue collar worker' and he is tough.

If you make the big one and my mob aren't in it i'll be chearing on the Cats because of this guy!!

On a final note how good is young Selwood! To be honest I can't recall a first year player playing as well as this bloke. He's cheaky too, I saw him bumping and dishing it out (legally) a couple of times last week and thought 'Mate that's confidence'. I know your whole team has improved this year but Selwood and G Ablett in the engine room are like twin turbo's.

Really? Thanks for the local knowledge, Beanie. Agree with all you've said.
He's a big fourth quarter player, and it's more than junk time heroics: he lifts whether we're winning by a large margin or the game is tight. Sarah, I think it's more than playing up the ground, for he's still kicking goals. Is it because he's more directly involved in the play? Is his engine larger than expected? Does he just have more petrol in the tank, after spending most of the match in the pockets?

Has anyone noticed that in the past 5 weeks there have been 3 (that I am aware of) articles with Mathew Stokes? There was two in two weeks about a month ago, and then another one recently. He must be very comfortable with the media, which is great to see from such a young player!!

Haven't read the articles C2R, but twice I've heard him interviewed post-match. Both times he was assured, forthright and detailed, with an impish sense of humour. Didn't strike me as a thinker -he never offered opinions of his own- rather a sponge that'd soaked up every drop of information imparted from his coaches. Helluva lot more interesting than Otto, but that ain't saying much.

Re: Matthew Stokes

This is no joke; I actually told a friend of mine when we were heading to the game that I had a feeling Stokes was going to have a good game and kick a bag. He has played pretty well the last couple of matches - it was bound to happen and I didn't think Freo had a particularly good match up for him (in the end it turned out they did, but he kicked ass.)

According to the afl site Stokes has 19 goals for the season.

Thanks :thumbsu:

If possible, would you be able to list all of Geelong's leading goal-kickers? That would be great!

Re: Matthew Stokes

Cam Mooney - 42 29
Steve Johnson 25 21
Cameron Ling 24 4 (damn accurate)
Nathan Ablett 22 14
Gary Ablett 20 22

All the players with 20 or more goals. Stokes has 19, chapman has 15, varcoe 14, etc etc...

Re: Matthew Stokes

If chappy hasnt been in and out of the side, Im sure he would have reached Hyper-Chappy stage and be kicking 3 goals a game like last year.
I think he showed how good he is against collingwood, pity he didnt kick the screamer goal!

Re: Matthew Stokes

I love the way some press commentators mention Stokesie as if no-one had ever noticed him before. Perhaps he is one of those quiet achievers we have been watching - with delight - and outsiders have dismissed as flash in the pan. Fantastic game against the Dockers - just fantastic!

I love their constant references to him as a 'young player' as well - only David Parkin seems to have picked up on the fact that he's so effective because he's not 'young' at all!

Re: Matthew Stokes

To those who where questioning Stokes in this thread previous to the Freo game please insert humble pie into you faces.

Thiswon't be a one off either. The week in week out effort the bloke puts in makes up for any of his deficiencies. He plays well above his height, has great foot skills and puts in 100% every week. Couldn't ask for anymore from a small forward.

Re: Matthew Stokes

I attended a party on saturday night and met up with an employee in the marketing department down at Geelong - she's been there a number of years and is very familiar with most of the players - attended the camp up at the Murray last year as well. I quizzed her on Stoksie after his 5 goal haul and she said he was a very focused and determined yound man which is unuasual for most of the indigenous players. She also said that Stokes and Varcoe had become friends and stokes would have a very good influence on young Travis=> she said trav can lose concentration quite a bit and is still so young.

Re: Matthew Stokes

Dropping Varcoe was a good move,he had lost some zip and focus over the past few games. I liken it to a slap over the back of the head i.e. getting too comfortable, don't perform your out. He'll be back, more focused and we need his unpredictability.

we won't see the best from young Trav until 2-3 years from now, it's one thing to have the skill and quite another to harden the body and to learn the discipline required to be your best at that level.

Re: Matthew Stokes

Stokes has played 12/16 games this year and has layed more tackles than the following
Enright, Milburn,Scarlett,Egan,Mackie etc..
Not bad for a wide receiver!

You can read that stat anyway you wish to, one could argue that he has great tackling abilities and is hard at the contests, or someone could could argue the reason he has so many tackles is because he is second to the ball because he gets in a position where he can't win it cleanly in the first place. I argue neither point because basing arguments around stats can say whatever you want. Varcoe will chase a bloke 50m to pressure his kick and that ends up getting a turnover and a rebound goal for the mighty cats and he gets no stats for it, even though he created the goal.

Stokes played a great game on the weekend, contributed well to the side and played his role for the team, but don't go beating your chest after one great game by him, lots of blokes have played at least one great game for our club over the years, players like Danny O'Brien and Tim Hargreaves and plenty of others.

I hope he continues to grow into a great consistent forward player who can rotate through the midfield and contribute to the Cats week in week out. No one can question his heart and determination, and his kicking skills are fantastic. I think people might have misinterpreted my post as me not liking Stokes, but that's not true at all, he is one of my favourite players and I want him to keep getting better and better.

Quite happy with the number 19 on my back too mate, but thanks for the heads up.

GO STOKESY!

Re: Matthew Stokes

great player stokesy but he needs to play like he did on saturday to keep his spot come finals.

well that is necessarily so. Playing a team in the top 4 come finals time with a much better defensive structure probably wont allow him that kind of freedom as the weak Freo did. If he can Kick 2 goals and assist a couple then that would be a great return in the finals.
