How is he sitting in terms of selection each week for guys in the know?

Personally I think he is a very important part of our side his leading for a small guy creates space and then he has the nouse to get back quickly and win some contested ball on the floor, Is very different to Steve Johnson in a crumbing style I think as he is more of a roving off the pack type were Johnson is more of a guy that will be that 1st option once roved and then will work his magic.

Just peoples thoughts I personally think he should be in for the rest of the year.

Re: Matthew Stokes

i like stokes alot, the only problem i have with him is that he gets outmarked a bit too often. Obviously for his size he is always gonna struggle in this area, but he needs to put a bit more effort into at least bringing the ball to ground.

Re: Matthew Stokes

I think he's pretty much a part of our best 22 now and ahead of Varcoe - gets a lot more of it. Also a better option than Cam Thurley who we had a couple of years back.

Re: Matthew Stokes

how did you manage to get cam thurleys name in there....dont know the relevance but good effort.

My one legged 80 year old Grandmother would be a better option than Cameron Thurley!

Re: Matthew Stokes

Stokes is a good player; tends to kick a couple of goals a game, creates a bit of forward defensive pressure, his tackling has been improving of late, etc etc. May not be in our best 10 or even 15, but he slots into the general team make-up well.

Re: Matthew Stokes

He creates great forward pressure on any defence when he is moving the ball forward. IMO he uses his small size to break through the packs fantastically, he's not scared of a bump either. Takes as good as he gives :thumbsu:

Re: Matthew Stokes

Stokes is a super player. Would easily have been drafted a year or two before if it wasnt for his height.

If Cam Thurley was on the list then we wouldn't have stokes. They took him as a like for like replacement.

He also had to battle off many rumors that flew around his name . For example only being drafted as a "buddy" for varcoe.

Great to see him playing some super footy. He is in our 18 imho.

Re: Matthew Stokes

I like him. Gives 100% every game, and his second, third, fourth efforts are sensational.

Lets not forget that he is also very skillful and creative with his possessions and a great little team player. Great pick-up by the club.:thumbsu:

Re: Matthew Stokes

Ever since his triple effort and tackle on the wing against Port (i think) at Skilled in his 2nd or third game I've been sold.

I think his stats for this year say alot about what he adds to the team. He kicks at least a goal a game with a pretty decent accuracy for a snapping crumber and he also applies heaps of forwardline pressure.

Varcoe has very similar stats but less then half the amount of possessions, which is basically why he was dropped.

Goals 14.7
Tackles 40
Possessions 197

Re: Matthew Stokes

Well, IMO he plays wide, he isn't as quick as he sometimes looks, he's a receiver not a ball winner and he is hardly involved in winning the Cats games. He does have some great assets with his kicking being fairly accurate and has a great sense of where the goals are, but a lot of the time he is in poor position to get the crumb off a contest and he doesn't really feature until the game is already won.

I think he will get better with more games (obviously) with his positioning, but at the moment he is a fringe player and Varcoe could be back in the side any time for him.

You can't be watching the same player the rest of us are.He gets the ball out of contests as much as any of the in and unders in the team.He would have more assists than goals scored by him and the reason he seems to get lots of possessions late if you hadn't noticed is because he gets moved further up the field and players like Bartel and even Selwood go forward. Can't agree with your view at all.

I was starting to think dtranium got confused and was talking about someone else.

Re: Matthew Stokes

Stokes has played 12/16 games this year and has layed more tackles than the following
Enright, Milburn,Scarlett,Egan,Mackie etc..
Not bad for a wide receiver!

Re: Matthew Stokes

At the start of the year Byrnes and Stokes were vying for the same possie. Stokes has clearly cemented it and his place in our best 22.

If/When Varcoe does come back it won't be at the expense of Stokes as has been suggested by dtrainium.

Re: Matthew Stokes

Love the way he plays. He always goes head first into a contest. I believe there was an article on gfc.com just before he came back from suspension about him being one of the first selected every round.

He also survived that talk about him being there to keep Varcoe company and why we drafted such a short forward.

I'd question the blokes kicking it to him before having a go at him being outmarked. You'd kick it to Stokes if he was clear of his man or running to space but the times that he's been outmarked is when we've bombed it on top of his head. That's fine when your kicking to Moons, Nath, Otto or Hawkins but when it's kicked long to Stokes & Varcoe, questions about decision making need to be made.

As for Stokes himself, what's not to like. Tough as nails, hits the contest hard and brings players into the game with his creativity. His two goals in the last burried the Dons a few weeks back and his match last year against Port showed what he's capable of.

If I remember right he pretty much helped to seal the game against Port last year. I remember him outmarking Ebert and goaled when the game was up for grabs. I think that we lack a good crummer in the forward line when the ball hits the turf. A far better option than Monty.

Re: Matthew Stokes

You'd say Stokesy has cemented his spot for now, but still could improve. His two goals on the weekend were in the last minutes of the game, if memory serves that has happened a couple of times. He has to keep kicking goals, but he is a dangerous little forward with good hands.

Re: Matthew Stokes

He does struggle at times with overhead marking especially when in a close contest on the lead, was shown up a few times vs the Pies in this manner.

However, what he makes up for is the extra efforts. At times he throws himself around like it is his last game and puts in sometimes 3-4 efforts to win the ball. He is a good tackler and although he doesn't have the suprising pace of Varcoe, he gets his share because he has more upper body strength over Varcoe.

He is a good lead up reciever of the ball also, but as stated if in a contested marking situation he usually loses.

Bloody good foot skills, I'll give him that too. Some of his passing has been quite good recently, and he is fairly good at kicking for goal.

Re: Matthew Stokes

Good to see Matty Stokes playing good footy.
I saw a lot of him in Darwin playing for Palmerston Magpies when he was 16.His team mates were the two Davey Brothers and he was a lot better than both of them back then.:thumbsu:
His size is his only downfall but he gives 110% He tackles and chases which is what a lot of forwards don't do.

Re: Matthew Stokes

I was going to start a thread on the following statement, but seeingsd as there is allredy one on him...

Has anyone noticed that in the past 5 weeks there have been 3 (that I am aware of) articles with Mathew Stokes? There was two in two weeks about a month ago, and then another one recently.

He must be very comfortable with the media, which is great to see from such a young player!!
