Maths-Very hard

I used to hate maths doing heaps and heaps of it at uni because of my engineering degree.

But now maths fascinates me... it's an amazingly deep and complex subject and crazily, all the stuff I did at uni only just scratches the surface. I'm in awe at the people who have the brainpower to grasp such complex ideas. Same with cutting edge physics.

Obviously you use maybe 0.01% of the maths you learn in daily life, but be thankful there are brainiacs working hard and pushing the boundaries of mathematics because otherwise we wouldn't have half the new technology/scientific discoveries that we take for granted nowdays.

Maths rocks.

Wait until you get into Fourier Analysis, Z-Transforms and Infinite Impulse Response functions - oh and those nasty partial differential equations :D

Agree with everything you say. If you can get your head round it, and think that through maths you are uncovering some deep truth, maths does have a real poetry to it. Over my last couple of years at uni, I increasingly realised that I wasn't seeing equations as "cunning" or "neat", to my shame I was starting to think of them as "beautiful". (I can't believe I just admitted to that.) I just wish I was good enough at it to find it easy.

In the words of my quantum physics lecturer, "If you can visualise infinite dimensional matrices the exam should give you no trouble."

I am generally not very good at maths, but the degree that I am doing requires that I have an understanding of stuff like derivation and integration, and more hardcore stuff like complex functions. Makes it a bit hard as I never did methods or specialist at high school, and wanted to steer well clear of it. But now I have a growing appreciation for it.

For Science degrees, especially Physics and some Chemistry courses, you will study maths in both the first two years and second year maths there is as bad as it gets.

Must Humanities are relatively straightforward rope learning subjects. You just need to spend the time going over the material over again.

And a side note, Physics at Year 11/12 level is mickey mouse compared to second semester first year Physics at uni. After that it gets very painful.

Exactly. It might just seem like a bunch of numbers but you have to work at it and think to get the desired result.

That said, I didn't mind maths when I really focused on it, but a lot of the time I couldn't be ****ed.

I did my matriculation (year 12) in 1975, in those days we had PEB (Public Examinations Board) exams at the end of the year. We actually also had leaving (year 11) PEB exams.

So there was no slacking off as the exams were the last things to do in the school year.
 
I've choosen general maths for year 11. God i hope i dont fail. My maths buddies will help me alot though.

I'm doin specialist and studies this year.

Studies is easy as piss, specialist not so.

Got a practice exam for specialist in 45 minutes time, I don't think I'll pass unfortunately.

I understand all the basics, and am very good when it comes to complex numbers/real polynomials and trig preliminaries, but most of the other stuff I struggle with.
 
Maths was easy and a more useful subject than woodwork, photography and art.

Who has painted or made a table since they finished school?

University Maths and Physics was a bitch, but Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics is a bigger ball breaker.

Algebra is exceptionally basic and will more than likely be used in general life.

Other stuff such as trig calculus etc wont be, so I dont see the point in learning it tbh.
 
The Universe has some amazing properties which can be modelled extremely well by mathematics... Nature, Gravity, Astronomy and numerous other subjects are founded on mathematics. When I asked my teacher when I would be using maths in real life she had no answer. I have learnt that mathematics is extremely important, especially in my line of work and study.

They teach you to think, for one.

It also means that those who need the skills later in life will have the fundamental understanding required. Many kids in high school don't know what they want to do, so really everyone should be required to do some basic maths. I mean what should they teach you in high school if they can't teach you things like maths?
 
I do like Maths, I found it probably the easiest subject in school along with music. Remembering all the formula's you had to use was probably the most difficult thing. Algebra, trig etc were all pretty fun subjects.

I don't think I'm going to need to know Algebra if I'm going to be a sports journalist. ;)
