Just bandaids on our slow midfield we have been fielding for ten years.
Throw them around all you like but when you have 5 slow midfielders in one team...priddis, Mitchell, Sheed, gaff, Hutchings its never going to counter the likes of gws and especially anyone on the wide expanses of the mcg.

Simpson has been putting bandaids on it since he got here topping up with players like Jetta. The problem isn't the fringe midfielders it's been the core for a long time led my Mr slow himself.

Hopefully now the curly haired one has been removed forcibly (yes not his decision entirely and 8 years too late) we get some young leg speed.

I for one have no regrets priddis has retired. In fact I think it could be a massive step forward for the club.

Now let's get some speed and talent in the midfield even if they are of low character.
yes but that wasn't where the problems were. It was the midfield. And so obviously there. But he only rotated Sheed and Redden there (standard rotations based around Priddis and Mitchell). Yeo went was forward in late in the last Q or something? Gov ? what for a microsecond?
"Simpson didn't change anything up when we were getting beaten"
"Yes he did, and here are some examples"
"Yeah but nah"

okay he didn't do "nothing" ... So explain how those examples (changes) would have helped towards us not being spanked by their runners and their midfield; and get back into the game?
let me guess it was our forward's fault.. they "went missing"..

Yeo went forward at the start of the second half, Wellingham went back, Gov went forward at one stage. Jetta went deep forward after coming off the back of the square for most of the game. Just off the top of my head.
I agree these changes were made but could you attempt to explain what the switch of Wellers back and Yeo fwd actually provided? Yeo is a better over head mark (Sharrod is quite competent in this area) but whats the point with the ball hardly entering our 50. The only thought (hopefull) i had was he knew the game was cooked and wanted the mid to see it through so everyone can plainly see it was the right decision for Prid and Mitch to retire and he gets full support to change the entire midfield.

I didn't say he didn't change anything.

I'm saying what he did was innefectual and he couldn't change the midfield enough due to poor list management and focus on top up players rather than youth development.

After all. The only quick players he has are yeo, Jetta and Cripps.

Not enough to change our entire midfield setup really is it now?

I wouldnt be surprised if there was a push for priddis to have another year after the week before - so he just put the idea to bed the only possible way you could.

It's like there aren't any more inside midfielders in the world.
What do the other 17 teams in the AFL do without Matt?
I'm surprised someone has won the premiership since 2007, after all it's impossible to win the contested ball and clearances without him.

Oh wait...we couldn't win them with him...
Whatever are we going to do!!

Just had to bump this thread because in my humble opinion we are way better off this season without priddis.

We just smashed port in contested possessions who are supposed to be one of the better sides even after losing Shuey.

We don't have defensive liability without priddis, everyone chases and tackles desperately.
Our speed and ball movements are awesome and giving us more entries into the 50.

All those arguments about "who is gonna get the pill without priddis" are debunked because it seems everyone is getting the pill and redden has put in awesome performances.

It's all looking up from here.

Put Priddis, Mitchell, RoJo or any number of our past or present (Masten) maligned players in the current side and they will adopt the 2018 playing style.

I think that this has been proven by any number of debutantes or younger players this year

We are a vastly different side, Priddis or no Priddis

It's up to the coaches, list managers, GM, etc. to identify and rectify problems with the game plan, the 22 each week and the list overall, and make adjustments as necessary.
Basically I just want to nuance the conversation to point out that it's not up to Priddis to stop playing the sport he loves and is damn good at, it's up to those above him to make the right moves.
Priddis was a champ. Nothing but love & respect for him from me.

I created the original thread and I stand by it - he held back this team for years singlehandedly and the coaches were too pathetic to see it
Wasn't the commentator telling on the weekend, "they look better balanced, the right mix of players in and spread out".

Many were calling the end of our midfield and we had no one to replace him.

Words cannot express how much more balanced a side we are.

Now its everyones role to chase and play defensively.

So many midfielders in career best form. We had 10 wasted years with him as the no. 1 midfielder.

About time this thread was revived.
