Ah. My fault.

My serious hat is usually stuck on pretty tightly. I assumed you were serious. I can stop scratching my head now.
Oh I was being serious, I just got a bit carried away in the post derby glow.

Seriously though, a lot of people had Griff tracking for All Australian before he did his knee and he beat Cox and NN comprehensively in the derby in 2013. As a genuine ruckman I think he's better, but NN probably does more secondary things that lifts him but he's not far off at all.

I remember griff doing pretty well but I don't remember thinking he beat them last year. And certainly not comprehensively.

As for rucking talent, my perception is about opposite to yours. NN is at his most damaging as a ruck. His tap work is top class when he gets hands to it. But his around the ground impact is stunted by his footy smarts and his tank. That's what griff has over him.

Gary Lyon said today that both Cox and Simpson are still TRYING to teach NN where to run. 0 kicks, 0 marks and 8 handballs says NN was the worst ruckman, and probably one of the worst players in the league on the weekend. If he's getting 800k a year and still being taught where to run, coupled with those stats it's proof positive that the Eagles have more dollars than sense Oh, that and he's crap and always will be, despite his ability to jump high and take the odd speccy.

Taberner career is only at his infancy. I know this is too early to call but this is how I see it...

Worse case scenario for Tabs: He gets delisted by the end of 2015 and never heard of Again.

Best Case Scenario: Tabs becomes an Adequate tall up forward, plays 20 games a season and Kicks 25-40 goals.

If Tabs becomes a 30-35 goal a season forward then I will take it. You wont get too many 50-80 goal a season Key Forwards like Pav and Buddy and Roughhead in the rookie list.

Pav in his best can Easily kick 50-70 goals a season no questions asked if he plays 20 games minimum. We need to find a way to Fill Pavs 50-70 goals a season.

I know Tabs and Apeness are in their developing stages. But if Both guys can reach that level where they can both kick 30-40 each or 60-80 goals between them each year, then That is good. Hell even if one tall is out for the season at least you would have one decent tall, even though he wont be as effective without his partner.

Once Pav is gone, we will have to sadly look back at this because Pav never really had a strong consistent tall Partner in the forward line. If he did, he would of had another 200 goals more easily.

I know most of you dislike the eagles, But look at Quentin Lynchs stats at West Coast... kicked only 286 goals from 202 games in 10 years from 2002-2012. Struggled from 2002-2004. Then kicked 31 goals from 22 games in 2005, 65 goals from 25 games in 2006 then 52 goals from 24 games in 2007 then struggled to kick 30 goals a season after that.

Every expert on the east coast has said at one time or another in Pavlich's development years that he was soft and not hard enough in a contest.
300 games later he now is finally recognised as one of the best forwards in the game .

Taberner in his first ever game in the backline without the guidance and support of Mcpharlin or Johnson was serviceable and gave it everything he had .
As for not being hard enough I have watched the body contact that he made in the contest you commented about and he did what the new rule stated and he remained on his feet and blocked with his shoulder into his opposing player ,he didn't go the hip and shoulder and he didn't dive in because that would have given away a free kick and a possibility of getting reported .
Tabs was slow out of the blocks when Mcgoven burst out on a lead and he struggled to keep body contact in the pack marking contests but so did Dawson against Kennedy .
Mcgoven is 22 years of age and as been playing in a winning team at East Perth so he has come on with confidence . He has also been playing mostly in defence for that time so he knows how a backman goes about defending and he is aware of how to get a brake on his opponent
I remember Neals first couple of games as well and he was as nerves as a 5 year old playing with his idols .
It took him more than a couple of games and being dropped back to WAFL for him to believe that he could not only play but become an automatic selection in our team .
Hill struggled for 2 years to break a tag but look at him now .
They all have to learn and in Taberners case his lesson was on the job and with no time to prepare and very little help as well .
The kid gave good effort and didn't quit or throw in the towel ,he kept at it all day and in my mind what more could you ask of him .
So from me well done son you gave it a go and you did it for the team ,thanks

I agree with all this.

That McGovern bit I definitely agree with too. McGovern was playing in a good team in the WAFL got his confidence up and translated that to his recent AFL form.

I agree Hill Struggled in his 1st 2 seasons. The guy only weighed 65-70kg when we recruited him. after 2 solid years playing AFL, he bulked up, built up his running tank and the rest his history. Just look at that final quarter vs the saints in round 4 2012 and that famous goal vs geelong last season in the Qualifying final that got freo that famous home prelim vs the swans.

Another example was Chris Mayne. He Struggled until Ross Lyon came along. In 2012 he kicked 37 goals, 9 behinds. In 2013 it was 35 goals and 11 behinds.

He wasn't great, but in a defence that each player has a role how hard would it be replacing two all Aussies and a club favourite. He gave up two or three goals that Macca or Johno may not have but that is why they are all Australians.

I remember a few years ago Johnson playing so badly, all of us wanting him dropped or traded. Then there is Mundy, Duffield, Ibbo, Clancy, Neale, etc.
I have faith in our system now, and in truth looking at the list it is almost impossible to work out who wont be there next year. Tabs has shown more at Peel
than a generation of players before him. Put him at the Sharks, Swans, EP, with more balanced midfields and he would in the one to watch basket.

dont forget in some seasons he played midfield for like 2-3 years when we harvey was in charge - he could easily have had another 200+ goals ontop of his 600 be a 1K plus goal player.

I have to admit, up until last season I was wondering what Ibbo was even doing on our list. I thought he was terribly over rated. I could not see why anyone else would want him either. Now, he's an automatic starting 18 for me. Give the kid time. Ross made, Barlow, Sylvia, (is making) Mora, Walters etc... EARN their spot. If you get a spot in our team you've earned it. You've shown something in training and your WAFL games and you've hit the KPI's that Ross and the staff have set for you. I ask you this, has Ross ever not got the best out of his players? I can't recall a glaring mistake on a player (Even Michie didn't set the world on fire in his first few games at Melbourne) made by RTB. One of his traits is his ability to pick players who can perform in whatever role he gives them. He sees Tabs every day, in the Gym, in match sims, skills sessions... If he's got faith in the kid, we probably should too.

The problem is the kid needs confidence in himself - we have confidence in him and rtb

I agree with you regarding Taberner, but the highlighted point is way off the mark, there is a reason he won the coaches association as most promising young player after his second year.

That will come in time. The reality is though, that he probably will and needs to get that confidence in the WAFL. Once he can consistently clunk a mark, he'll be a good option for us. And he will get it in time.

I believe he deserve's a game against Melbourne
AS a forward, yes. Continue to throw him in the fray. Have to say it is commendable how played last week given the role he had. Battled as much as he could. NicNat got 0 marks or kicks and he did play on Taberner a little bit. Dockers of old with a backline like that would've just about gave up without Ross.

No ! Tried

Must try Apeness and Gumby before it's too late in the season to try

We know what we have with Tabs

But what will apeness in his first season offer that Tabs hasn't ? Gumbleton isn't match fit and who knows how his body is holding up. Tabs gets into good positions and is a good foil for Pav to have. Zac Clarke can then get a more of a ruck role.

I would like Taberner to play more games in defence for Peel as I think he would learn more about how to play as a KPF and he would gain the confidence needed to play under pressure in the forward line . We may find the swingman that we have needed as a result .

For those who think that Taberners game was not good did anyone notice how badly Butler played when Brown went down with the knee injury .
We may have been a little disappointed with Clancee as our sub and how he had little impact on the game but Butler let Ballantyne off the leach and goals came at a rush as a result .
