Promising and Frustrating Season

7159150769_4356c02f33.jpg

After a disappointing 2011 there were calls for Goose to be delisted making this season make-or-break for the unlucky key defender.

Matt’s year starting in the worst possible manner with a freak accident involving Goose in a marking contest resulting in Brown sustaining a third set of facial fractures in less than 12 months. However it is his fearlessness that makes Maguire the well-respected backman he is.

After a strong pre-season Goose was possibly in career best form until injuries ruined his season. Maguire’s strong form in the first half of the season allowed Merrett to play forward to cover the ruck/forward role. He cemented his position as one of the best in the AFL for one-percenters.

Goose played the first 12 games, ending up with 16 games for the season. He played 15 games in 2011 and 14 in 2010. In the second half of the season he was cruelly shut down by elbow, ankle and then foot injuries. Surgery ended his season after the Crows win. He signed a one year contract extension which should see him pass 150 games but at just 28 we all hope he has at least a couple more seasons to follow.

Goose enjoys singing the song a lot.

Season Highlights:

His complete domination of Mitch Clark in round 1 was no doubt a highlight for many Lions supporters.

In his return match receiving 1 Brownlow vote against his old side the Saints in which he gathered 24 possessions and 10 marks as well as completely shutting out his opponent.

For those who didn't see it, Goose Maguire was on 'After the Bounce' last night, albeit by telephone.

Jono Brown and Dan Merrett also were featured for their various efforts...particularly Sauce in a couple of 'Golden Fist' promos...nonetheless, a lot of love for the Lions and our boys last night.

Dan Merrett said on 'Before the Game' that Goose has not broken anything and was walking after the game.

Also confirmed the injury was the same leg and commented that Goose uses a real hammer to bash the scar tissue on that very same leg prior to each and every game in order to help free up his leg.

Yeah, you'd think that leg and foot surely couldn't take much more punishment...you'd think Goose will have some serious issues with that leg later in life.

We can be very thankful we have a young understudy in Justin Clarke to fill Goose's void, but I for one look forward to seeing Goose back in the side asap.

Love Goose. I think he's had a huge impact on the club. Hope it's a short spell on the sidelines and he can get back in some form soon.

Lions sideswiped by hot Dogs: Voss

Defender Matt Maguire was walking in the rooms after being substituted with a lower left leg injury and Voss was hopeful he would be available against the Crows.

Goose's injury may not be as bad after all, well at least not as bad as MMM apparently had reported (6-8weeks).

The vision of him apparently chucking a tantrum on the bench was actually of him chucking an ice bag on the ground to break up the ice.

Funny how things can appear so different at the time.
I thought that was pretty clear on the TV but of course the commentators didn't see it that way

Heh commentators were obviously the same species as those going nuts at an umpire in the Suns game for giving away too long a 50m penalty when the audio clearly heard him adding a second "50m for abuse" after the first one was infringing the mark.

Anyone know why Maguire got suspended for his accidental head clash with Jude Bolten a few years ago...

Because it was golden boy Jude Bolton.

If it had of been someone ugly, he would have got off.

Well thats my take on it.

Head high contact, Bolton was concussed, MRP had a big night the night before.

Maguire set to miss Crows

Most Lions fans feared the worst when Matt Maguire was substituted out of last Saturday’s match after hobbling to the bench – particularly considering his recent history of leg injuries.

But Maguire seems to have escaped any major damage and remains a chance to face Adelaide this Saturday at the Gabba.

Physical Performance Manager Brett Burton told LIONS TV that a final decision on the key defender would be reserved for later in the week.

“(Maguire) was pretty sore after the weekend. He got a hit to his shin and has had some injuries to that area before.”

“He’s improving, but we’ll see how the week progresses for him and make a call on him at the end of the week.”

Defence worries for Lions, Suns ahead of Q Clash

By: Andrew Hamilton, Terry Wilson April 09, 2013

BRISBANE and Gold Coast have defensive concerns with Matt Maguire and Greg Broughton both in doubt for Q Clash at Metricon Stadium on Saturday.

Maguire missed Brisbane's loss to Adelaide last Saturday with lower leg pain and his absence was telling, with coach Michael Voss unable to find a suitable opponent for Crows forward Josh Jenkins. The Suns play three "talls" in attack most weeks, with Sam Day and Stephen May partnered by the resting ruckman and would stretch the Lions if no changes were made by Brisbane.

Lions football manager Dean Warren confirmed Maguire would need to pass a fitness test later in the week.

Clarke needs to play if Goose doesn't get up. I'd also like to see us play a 3rd tall, if it's not Ace, then bring in Lisle and have Martin use his athletic ability a bit more to cover some more ground.

I don't think this week will be a problem in that we can be a bit more interchangeable than against Adelaide. With Walker the main threat on goals, we had to play Merrett on him. The Gold Coast will have May, Day and Dixon/Smith up forward - no one of Tex's quality. I suspect Merrett will take the resting ruckman with Lester and Patfull to take the other two. I think Merrett plays his best footy against ruck sized opponents as he's generally more mobile, without losing anything in terms of size or aerial ability.

The following week is a big concern though. North have 3 legitimate talls and Merrett is our only option on Petrie. That means either Tarrant or Hansen gets Lester, which is a problematic match up. That might be cause enough to blood Clarke. The question is whether we bring Clarke in this week against a slightly less daunting forward set up, to give him a game to settle in before a really big challenge the following week?

People are far too keen on Clarke to play at this early stage of his career. He gave some really good effort in the NAB cup but was out of his element in some contests. Not ready.

Though having said that he'll probably get selected this week and make me look stupid.

I don't think Lester on Hansen would be a particularly bad match up for us personally.

And defender Matt Maguire's ongoing absence is a major headache for Brisbane who must find opponents for Drew Petrie, Lachie Hansen and Robbie Tarrant.

It was hoped he would only miss the one game but he has now sat out two weeks and football manager Dean Warren said he may not be available until Rd 6 against Sydney.

"He is probably a couple of weeks away at least,'' Warren said. "Because he has had a fair few issues there during his career, it is just going to take a little bit longer.''
