My opinion was that Swan didn't do enough defensive work a few years ago but last year he was much improved. I expect that to bleed through to Beams too.

Ball, Macaffer and Adams are very defensively minded mids. Pendlebury will rack up even more and if Swan continues from last year, we're in a good place. Josh Thomas I think needs to keep this front of mind.

With that being the case where do we rate in comparison to the other top 4 teams with defensive KPI's?

The GC game was a perfect example the first half from all reports there was no pressure on the GC ball carrier and the midfield were, for lack of a better word, lazy.

I'm hoping like hell that the boys will show Lloyd up on Friday, but I'm hesitant to commit at this stage when compared to the upper echelon teams ATM.

I don't necessarily like Lloyd, but I think it is a fair enough comment.

Our mids clearly don't work hard enough defensively, and this also shone through in pre-season where we copped big scores against. Even GC made a mockery of our midfield in the first half and we were relatively full strength.

On paper our midfield is the best in the comp, but it is also a front-running midfield. Capable of beating anyone on its day, but also very capable of getting scored against. We should also be a dominant stoppage team, but the stats don't reflect that and when we lose we tend to get smashed in clearances.

Hopefully Scotty Burns tightens this area up this year.

We are clearly a midfield-centric team. If our midfield dominates, we have the artillery up forward to put teams away.

I rate Lloyd, actually surprised to see Lloyd criticised for having a bias but then praising Dermi. Would say Dermi lets his allegiances come through much more than Lloyd.

Maybe we should buy off some of these ex-players by giving them some coaching gigs. Dermott has become a big fan of GWS since they started paying him. I'm sure that Lloyd would be relatively cheap to buy off. I would have contracted him to be the one to provide kicking expertise to Travis etc. That would have also ensured that he would give glowing reports on everything Collingwood.

Why has this board turned into a "look at what this person has written about my club... I'm offended and i'm going to make a huge deal about it" whinge fest.
People are paid to write opinion based articles. Don't let it get to you.

Mods: Maybe we can have a "sooky lala" thread for all this rubbish to go in....?

This exactly, I have little problem with what Llyod said last night, mainly because it's nothing 100 other media types haven't said, and even some of our own players and coaches have backed this us.

Burns is the key, he was as good defensively as he was offensively as a midfielder, so hopefully he can instil that into some of our mids. A fit Beams, Ball and the addition of Adams will also help though, neither of these three are afraid to run both ways.

Lloyd's comment was bang on the money, last year our two-way running was laughable at times. On paper we have the names, on performance we rank 4-6th midfield wise (Syd, Freo and Hawthorn are miles ahead)

Slams? He pointed the obvious out. Blaze made a whole thread about it.
Lloyd speaks the truth and isn't afraid to say it.

Well in this case the truth is subjective, he has a lack of knowledge when it comes to Collingwood, he says nothing has changed but bringing back Beams, Ball and Young recruiting Adams and a year under the belt of guys like Dwyer and JT.

Why don't you stop watching it then Dave?
But then how can we complain about someone in the media saying something that may be true albeit "negative" if we don't tune in?
I reckon Lloyd's a great commentator and doesn't sugar coat crap and doesn't seem biased in his views.
Don't see what was wrong with what he said either.

Is that good enough? We'll soon see.

Didak D. Thomas and Wellingham. You haven't covered their immediate loss for hard running in the centre and pace.
Maybe in a few years but then we lose Swan Ball etc. Hard to play catch up.

Never rated Lloyd that much, he always seems like he is trying to be something he is not. He doesn't strike me as particularly bright. The guy used to throw grass in the air when the roof was closed FFS!

**** no Thomas hasn't played for the last two years, the year before Wellingham got traded he played ordinary football, it would be one of his worst years at the club. Fasolo or Elliott will cover Dids playing the HHF role

That's when it all started.
When

D.Thomas
Didak
Swan
Pendlebury
Beams
Wellingham
Ball

That's the mids you want and that's what won us the flag. We will never be as good a as that. When we have a core mid group as talent as that we will be back.

Our core group is the same or better now
Pendlebury (better then 2010)
Swan
Beams (way better then 2010)
Ball
Sidebottom (better then 2010)
Adams
J.Thomas

Didak was done so that's neither here nor there.

It's not a zero sum game on Thomas. I don't think we can deny he is a super player if fit, but his compo allowed us to jump up to 6 and get Scharenberg while retaining 10 to get Freeman. We haven't been in such a recruiting position since 2006 with 8 and 10.

Scharenberg projects as a tall mid with a killer boot after showing ability forward and back. We may have a midfield in a few years of Pendlebury, Beams, Swan, Scharenberg, Adams, Kennedy, Thomas, Freeman and Fasolo.

I don't think we need to fetishise Swan. Buckley was a towering mid but we won a flag after he left.

J Thomas isn't there yet. One season and now he's injured again. Expecting him to cover the loss of a Didak 35 disposals and 4 goals game?
Adams. Yeh but going to take a few years before he gets to the heights of Dale Thomas 2010 form?
Ball will never be as good as 2010.
Swan spent more time out of the midfield in 2013. Which leaves us short inside the centre.
Already had Sidebottom in 2010.

Didak was done? We are talking about what it takes to get a flag. So Didak 2010.

Lloyd is one the money but
I don't believe we have covered the loss of
Didak D.Thomas and Wellingham in that midfield to become a force once again. Too many goals lost from the centre, too much class lost. Too much explosive pace. Lloyd hasn't mentioned that.

Nah just the 2010 one... The one that won us the most recent flag. Remember that? Yeh that one.

So players never get old or regress in your world. Evidently no-one else in the football world thought Didak in 2014 represented the same value, but by all means, pack another cone.
