Matthew Lloyd

My categories of key forwards:

Tier 1 - Ablett, Lockett, Dunstall, Coventry, Coleman, Hudson
Tier 2 - Carey, Wade, McKenna, Titus, Lloyd, Pratt, Lee, Richardson, Franklin
Tier 3 - Rocca, Hall, Kernahan, Quinlan, Roach, Mohr, Vallence, Pavlich, Lynch, Fevola, Modra, Riewoldt, Brown, Hart...

Matthews and Bartlett were more than pure goalkickers, so don't really fit into the above tiers.

And some of the above could play other roles too, this is only considering the key forward role, not overall ability.

What?

Carey deserves to be tier 1, and Kernahan was better than most of those players you listed in tier 3.

Indeed, say what I like about the Velvet Sledgehammer but he was an accurate kick and makes me long for the days of full forwards bringing up the tonne. I do wonder how he would go with the 30 second rule though, perhaps that is what affects most of the forwards now. Back in those days he would take his sweet time with the wind and the grass, it was like I was watching a Terrence Malick film, but his kicking was poetry and the outcome assured.

No way. They're scared. They don't lap it up like Lloyd. He was in his element. He wanted the kick. Preferred all eyes on him. That's a full forward.

You clearly didn't read my post fully. This is not a rank of total ability, only prowess as a key forward.

Carey was a gun around the ground, best centre half forward ever. But the number of goals he actually kicked is only worthy of tier 2.

The full forwards these days aren't even worthy to tie Lloyds boots
I think Brendan Fevola was just as good as him aswell it's a shame he couldn't play long enough but both could nail shots from outside 50 that modern forwards would set to the goal square

More games than total brain cells. His media presence ruins his legacy for me. Incapable of independent thought. Great player though, was THE MAN when I was in primary school.

Did you rate Titus better on the lead or the one on one contests?

He looked like he was a certainty to crack the 1000 goal mark early-midway through his career but his form waned over the 2005-2009 period (season ending injury in 06 didn't help) and he never quite got there.

Really good full-forward but the next tier down from the other 3.

Plugger: 281 games, 1360 goals, 4.84 per game
Dunstall: 269 games, 1254 goals, 4.66 per game
Ablett: 248 games, 1030 goals, 4.15 per game
Lloyd: 270 games, 926 goals, 3.43 per game

Speaking of not pure goal kickers, you rate Richo over Royce Hart?

Could've played on a year or two. I'll always despise Knights for forcing him out.
Wasnt he was asked to play more of a 'team' role but couldn't deal with it? any strong coach would have done the same thing as Knights.

Great forward but will never be regarded among the top few IMO because of his habitual simulation whenever the ball went over his head. I do very much respect that he has come out since and said he regrets that behaviour, up a notch for that.

He was played out of position, simple as that. The best role for both him and the team was at full forward kicking goals. Instead they played Neagle and other duds in that spot.

I dunno if he's that far behind the others, remembering he played most of his career in an era where the bags kicking days were over. He crossed over, but at the end.

Shame he didn't get to 300 games and 1000+ goals, would have with any other coach but Knights, and would have gone 1100+ if it wasn't for the really bad Achilles injury.

Interesting discussion.

All have tarnished their image as well in one way or another.

Dunstall - Working with Danny Frawley
Lockett - Racing greyhounds
Ablett - Playing for Hawthorn
Carey - Not being able to get the better of Jakovich

Lloyd - Publicly shaming TradeDraft
You are very kind on the reasons Ablett and Carey tarnished their images?

What seemed to annoy people most about him was his goal kicking routine. Now he'd be applauded for it (if it could do it under 30secs)

Overall he was consistently very good but rarely great. That's why people rate him like they do.

Thought it was a hamstring

Career was a bit back to front. First half of it was bloody amazing and what he was doing in his early 20s was phenomenal. He was dominating the competition that young in a style not recently seen apart from Buddy in 2008.

Second half wasn't as good, playing in poorer sides so you'd expect it of a largely stay at home forward. Still many years he was kicking 60 - 70 in shit sides which is bloody good.

Middle of his career he was flying, I remember one of Pluggers rare interviews he was typically just swatting away questions about his goalkeeping record, saying he wouldn't have it for long anyway as Lloyd would break it easily.

Personally I was just disappointed he didn't quite get to 1000 as its that big round headline number that really puts his name in lights in a historical sense, and I think would have got him more of the recognition he deserves.

Anyway ultimately in 120 years of the league... six blokes have kicked more goals than him. Pretty bloody good indicator of where he sits.
