Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide's rebuild?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

I'm not watching until Nicks is gone.
Noted ;) ....have you microwaved your membership yet ....that's always a great message to send

I always have a chuckle at these threats

I have considered stopping posting on BF due to demoralisation. I'm pretty sure most of the board would just say "don't threaten me with a good time" so I stick around out of spite.

The conservative season wide team selections reek of a coach prioritising finals over developing his youth for the future, hence the expectation should be finals. Doesn’t matter where our list profile is at it at that point.

Listening to Adam Kelly on SEN i had some comfort that reappointing Nicks isn't on the current agenda.

What I didn't like is it came accross that the club is comfortable with the level of trajectory this year.

Having said I've always said Showdown wins make a big difference to the pressure on a coach in SA. A loss against Melbourne and a big loss to Port and I think Nicksy is under huge pressure for that Suns game at home.

Adam Kelly is another hack that needs to go.

Has managed to stay under the radar

Smart business when the team is struggling. Keep a low profile.

Can dial it up if we ever return to finals

Country racing club GM, WAFL club CEO, SANFL GM of Football. Not a skerrick of experience making performance decisions in an elite sporting environment. Just an administrator that ends up having significant input at List Management, Football Strategy and coaching appointments. No wonder we chased Balme hard 2 years running, but like Godden, we've settled for someone who we know isn't up to it.

Some of us on here could do a better job tbh.

There’s never anything to be impressed about when he speaks. Just another dullard like Nicks.
He sounds like a farmer. Surely the club can attract a top line operator. In no particular order the club needs to move on Kelly, Roo, Reid, Ogilvie, Nicks, VB, Olsen, Godden.

I reckon the "we went hard or Balme, we nearly got him" is largely BS. If we went hard for Balme in 2019, but settled on Kelly, then why haven't we gone hard at someone of Balme's stature in the last 4 years?
Nicks is tight with Kelly and told them he doesn't want anyone else in the role.

Disappointing if true.

But not surprising in an organisation where people prioritize jobs over success

No it's not, Balmey has said it himself on the record but at about that time he had a serious health episode which forced him to decide against it. Kelly was already working at the Crows at the time. We made more than one approach as well.

People of Balmey's experience don't grow on trees either, they're pretty rare and even harder to get.

Reid is hard one to judge in that group because he gets given the directions to an extent. He negotiates the deals. The position we found ourselves in with a rebuilding list wasn't necessarily his choice.

We chased Balme as a consultant ....part-time

He was not chased in preference to Kelly .....but as an extra resource

And said on record he asked Gale and Gale said no (to releasing him from Tiger contract) but he was going to come

The level of incompetence is embarrassing but not as bad as how long its taken a lot of people to wake up and some still haven't.

When taking into consideration Burgess influence and lack of injuries, inclusion of Rankine and Dawson and Texs resurgence thr overall improvement is bog average to non existent.

How you can off load so many players and have so many draft picks and still have rookies leading the midfield and list management and recruiting havent been replaced is as mind blowing as a coach that makes an injured player the sub or a kid whose having a ripper game the sub.

Nicks was a bandaid fix while the cancer is srill there.
