Draft Profile Matthew Panos

He's played in the Norwood reserves recently, as well as a couple of games in the seniors, and he's gone okay. Nothing world-beating in the seniors, as can be expected for a kid, but he has averaged 3 goals a game in the reserves so far this year.

You might be seeing something in Panos that I've missed. I guess we will see come draft day, but that is a rather big call.
I'm with you, I wouldn't even put Johnston and Panos in the same stratosphere, Lewis is miles ahead on ability. What people need to ask themselves is how does his game translate to the next level? Less space less time and an inability to win a high percentage of his one on ones means he won't be as effective. Not a first rounder for mine, nice lead without a burst and a lovely kick but not much else going on.

Not that it means much but can confirm he has had interviews with North, Sydney and Port so far. Im guessing by the end off the draft camp he would have had interviews with the majority of the club but the three that seem the most interested are those clubs. I guess we will have to wait and see!

Sounds ok without knowing the detail. He plays a style of game that you expect him to be better when he fully develops physically. So if hes getting 3 per game against men in a decent comp now, I would be happy with that.

When he is 21 or 22 he will be very strong and that will enhance his game big time.

Scott Lucas had more tricks in his bag than Matthew Lloyd - It didn't make him a better player.

Can't say I agree with that.

Lucas had the greater running capacity and a longer kick, but Lloyd was quicker off the mark, had stronger hands, was a more accurate kick for goal, was a better pack mark and got into more dangerous positions more often.

Lucas popped up as a match winner on occasion, but Lloyd had plenty more tools at his disposal.

Going to be interesting where Panos ends up - I'm not a massive fan.

Loves playing into the forward 'hole' of sorts where the ball is put out in front and all he's got to do is edge his opponent on the lead. At AFL level that kind of space is very rarely afforded and I've got doubts over whether he's explosive enough off the mark.

Needs to become a better contested marking option in my opinion, and whether he's got that in him is debatable.

Having said that, if he gets 3 opportunities a match he'll in all likelihood kick 3 goals, and those players still have a place in AFL football, especially in strong sides.

I've got little doubt he'll make it as an AFL footballer, but I think he's always going to be on the sevicebale side of the ledger as opposed to being a guy that a forward line can be built around.

I'd be more inclined to punt on Butcher, Talia, Carlisle or Griffiths as key forwards.

Panos will be the big slider in the draft. I for one rate him fairly highly but recruiters simply don't rate him. A similar case is Aaron Cornelius who was a very similar player and imo a much better player then Panos (They aren't KPP height and are very one dimensional). I had Cornelius going in the first round in a very very strong draft yet he fell until our round 4 pick. Because it's a very weak draft Panos won't slide as much as Cornelius but i'm about 95% certain he won't be going in the first round. Butcher, Talia, Carlisle and Fitzpatrick will be picked all before Panos.

Hope you take him over Butcher (if NM/WC/Sydney pass) and you take Rohan with your second pick so atleast one of Tapscott and Butcher is available for pick 11

Sounds like the exact kind of player we need.
Is that because there's a lot of hype with Panos?

The exact type of player we need is the kid who will be the best footballer in three years time.

Pure and simple.

I don't want another Jake Edwards who is a tweener with pace, good hand and an OK kick.
Your first sentence doesn't make any sense.
My point was that Kennedy and Clark are better footballers than Anthony.

Yet Anthony was the first player selected in the 2005 draft to have kicked 50 goals in a season.

I wouldn't even need to think if I was offered the pick of Clark, Kennedy and Anthony...

Or Carlisle, Talia and Panos...

One of these players should be there for Carlton if we want a KPP.

Well, Mitch Clark is playing in the ruck, and Kennedy is a CHF who only played 16 games, so it's not entirely surprising that neither of them kicked 50 goals.

Jack Anthony was also pick #37 in the draft (and drafted as a full back), compared to Kennedy picked at #4 and Mitch Clark at #9 - It's not really fair to compare their overall quality as players.

It's also not really relevant to Panos, because Panos will likely go below Carlisle and Talia, yet if the comparison holds true, then all things being equal, he'll probably kick more goals than they do, as you would expect with someone of his skillset.

Those in the know at the Norwood Football Club are saying Panos a lock for first round and unlikely to fall below Melbourne's 12th pick.

Was the dominant forward at the Under 18 Championships where he clearly out performed Butcher. Fact he was All Australian Full Forward is evidence of this. At 192cm is the right height for an AFL forward. His testing at Draft Camp almost mirrored that of fellow SA player and last year's first rounder Lewis Johnston at last year's camp. Has been interviewed by almost every AFL Club and after he has a few pre-season's under his belt has the right body type to become a real power forward.

Haven't seen enough of Talia, Carlisle, etc but from what i saw of the Under 18 carnival this year, Panos was easily the stand out forward.

I also don't understand the criticism that he is one dimensional and struggles to take contested marks. He has consistently led every team he has played on whether that be Norwood, SA or Rostrevor in contested marks. In the Under 18 championships he was SA's number 1 forward by far and every team knew that. What uncontested marks can you get when you are your team's spear head? If he was taking uncontested marks he must have been doing something right as he was always stood by the oppositions' gun defender!

Panos is excellent at ground level, balanced, makes good decisions and rarely misses a target. Even when he moved up to playing key position at SANFL level he did not look out of place which indicates that he may be capable of contributing at AFL level much earlier than most.

From what i have seen of this year's talls Panos and Butcher are the best of the bunch and the only valid argument i have heard in favour of Butcher is potential but when judging potential I normally err on the side of the bloke who has improved out of sight over the past 12 months not gone backwards. His performance v Butcher's Vic Country in the rain at AAMI highlights Panos' potential as a match winner. His other best game of the Champs was against this year's champs WA, so not as if he picked up 10 goals v. Tasmania and did bugger all against the good teams.

The recruiters said of Fevola pre-draft "Nothing (about his game) really stands out". I'm not saying Panos is the next Fev (most unlikely) but you must judge a player by their all-round game rather than any one attribute. You can also look that extra bit closer to find a strength such as speed off the first five metres in Fev's case.
He was the fastest over 5 and (I think) 10 metres in his draft and could kick it 50 metres as a 17 year old. Are you suggesting they missed this about Fev?

Sounds like it, perhaps they thought speed of the first few metres was not impressive enough. We all know his other problems but I did read it somewhere that recruiters thought Fev was a bit 'vanilla' to paraphrase the article.

He's not the tallest of key-position players and as a 16-17 year old he had an unusual physique. I remember in the TAC final I noticed he chased down a highly touted midfielder known for his speed and it wasn't noted by the commentators. If anything, they probably thought it was the little bloke who had the same haircut.

I doubt the Bombers will pass on him at 33. They'd love a possible Lloydy replacement at 33 (Think of this pick like a raffle)

I hope North would be interested at pick 25 after picking up 2 midfielders at 5 & 21.
