Matthew Pavlich

At least he isn't playing on to selfishly chase games records like that little rat at North
What? That guy is still one of the best players in the competition.

For starters he could win a contest. Freo looked most dangerous when he wasn't involved in the play. There were times when you could see the midfielders actively go out of their way to avoid Pavlich. That's not what you want with your marquee forward.
It was one ****in bad game ya flog.

Need him out there anyway if Taberner is to have any chance whatsoever of developing.

Well, are the other healthy options going to provide anything better?

Just seems like some people can't come to terms with the fact that athletes decline at some stage. Yeah, he's not what he was, but I don't think that means he's got to just give up and step aside.
Well that is generally what happens other wise we would still have Lockett and Dunstall running around

Well, there seems to be some sort of surprise and shock here re: Pavlich, as though people somehow expected that he wouldn't ever decline.

I'd love to see him have a farewell game similar to Kobe where he turns back the clock and bags 8.

Of course, for that to happen the Dockers mids would need to feed him the ball at every opportunity (similar to the Lakers feeding Kobe everything)

And the team he is playing against to not bother defending him.

And Pav will need to take 50 shots on goal.

Poor game from Pav but pre injury he was quite good. I'll remember him as a champion and his clubs greatest player, not as the player obviously below his peak at the end like 90% of players are when they retire.

Has had two shockers in a row but was solid in games against Gold Coast, WCE, North & Adelaide. He would be way down the list of issues at the club, hopefully he can give us something over the next 10 games starting this week against Essendon.

Bad ending sadly. Like I said on the Freo board, the situation is done now. Retire now or play out the year, both will not look good.

But have to agree on this. he doesn't seem to be a person who cares a lot for personal glory. Will do what he thinks the team needs most. So he deserves a lot of respect for that...

give it all to Pav to make the call

if he wants to play the year out, cool

if he wants to end it, you do that and go balls to the wall to give him a goodbye worthy of him

immense player, who sadly - like many other - has missed the success his talent deserved. Doesn't lessen his worth or contribution though

Pretty average post. Patton drinking his own piss? You do know the injury run he's had don't you?

And Kennedy was far from steak knives, along with pick 3 he was the key part of the biggest trade in history.

Ok so Patton at age 20 had 9 goals to his name before he got injured. Injuries aside IMO he bought into his own hype, like many youngsters these days. Yeah injuries have cursed him.
Kennedy had 2 seasons with Carlton and had 11 to his name.

I don't think you got what I was saying. Pavlich was better then all these chumps at their age and I dare say will be better then all of them if they ever play at 34 years of age.

Threads like this piss me off because a champion has a poor game and posters come out and dig in the knife. If it were me I'd just shut the thread.

He did retire, but then we didn't get McCarthy, so he was convinced to go around again. He's helping with the development of Taberner, and hopefully Apeness, once he can run out a game and join the seniors. I don't think we're asking him to win games off his boot; I think we're asking him to teach the next generation.

father time is undefeated. as great as pav was this happens to everyone. but he's still their best forward...

Has been our best forward all year and could easily be sitting on 30 goals if his kicking wasn't off, that is the only real fault with pav this year. The saints game was his worst all year but he still laid 8 tackles and brought great effort, not to mention we kicked the ball over his head nearly every single entry into the 50, if we put it out in front he would have at least halved those contests with Fisher as he had him beaten for front positioning.

People tend to get caught up with age and not look at the bigger picture, he is also helping Taberner come along in strides and helps teach structure to our young players, in a year where Fyfe, Mundy, Johnno and Sandilands have been missing his leadership has been vital in developing the younger players. Pav may not be getting wins to finish out his career but i guarantee you he is thriving in setting up our future generation of players.

Silly thread tbh

I saw Pavlich speak at a function a while back. Seems like a really genuine good guy. Is probably Freo's greatest player to date and one of the AFL best of the past 15 years. But agree with most, is a shadow of what he was and really should think about giving it away.

I'm aware it's been done before but wouldn't retiring mid season be quitting on the team? Like others have said he deserves to go out on his terms but retiring mid year is definitely foreign to me.

Yes it would. These boneheads don't understand how important he is for leadership and structure. Pav doesn't play Saturday and Tabs gets double teamed at every contest and doesn't play his best game for the club. He didn't sign on another year to quit at the halfway mark.

Dead set legend the Pav. I love what he is doing this year. Obviously played on in the hope of another finals campaign but he continues to give everything week after week and is setting an example for the younger players at the club. His off field influence can't be understated.
