He would've retired last year if he knew how this season was going to pan out.

Pav playing on is pretty unselfish. Sacrificing a small part of his record/reputation because the team has no other forward options.
or you could say it was pretty selfish to play on in search of that elusive flag?

Who is he keeping out exactly?

Apeness? LOL.

Things might change as the year goes on but this comment is on the money. Pav doesn't play and Taberner has Fisher on him. Tabs played a pretty good game and Pav gets smashed by Fisher.

Pretty much the definition of an ultimate team man is Pav.

Make him Captain again for the remainder of the season and watch him kill it !

He's reminding me of how kozi finished up. The club should retire him this weekend against the dons in a game they can win

The intangible thing that he is providing this season is leadership. This is something that is not always apparent from a TV screen, but when viewed live at the ground you get to see his moves.

The point to look at is who of the 22 players who go out each week are going to provide guidance ( leadership ) to the team ?. Mundy is in and out through injury, Sandi has a reversing injury, Michael Johnson is hobbling, Fyfe is on crutches ................. what leaders are left ?.

In my book, Pav is earning his pay cheque for his leadership. Where would Taberner, Walters, Weller & Blakely be without Pav ................ yep cannon fodder.

Look at the big picture.

Isn't that why they went after McCarthy?

Maybe they shouldn't have put all of their eggs in one basket. Although I dare say he'll be playing there next year anyway.
But, can he be the number 1 target for the Freo footy club.

He's finished but I don't think he's going significantly worse than last year. It's just that the rest of the team have gone so poorly.

and that's the big issue... whilst the saints could afford to retire kozi when the end came near, freo on the other hand cant. they just dont have the talls to replace him and they dont have the leadership that was available at the saints to cover his absence

so essentially pav is unfortunately stuck in a situation where he's embarrassing himself for the sake of covering up the cracks in your list. he deserves better than this IMO

Embarrassing himself, god he didn't have the best game on the weekend but he hasn't exactly embarrassed himself. Ballantyne in the 2013 gf is embarrassing.

+ Anthony
+ Tarrant
+ Gumbelton

Plus unsuccessfully going after Cloke, Buddy and a host of others as well. Freo's aversion to drafting and developing key forwards is why Pav had to play on. The problem was evident 5 years ago but Freo thought they could just trade for a quick fix to solve the issue and it's come back to bite them now.

He should go to Mayne's position. Third tall providing the odd goal and basically being an on field coach. Get Apeness in there now.

Speaking of which, how does Mayne escape so much scrutiny?

He's kicked 8 goals from 10 games this season, that's deplorable.

He gets heaps of criticism for being shite...

Was actually decent on the weekend though.

14 disposals, 4 tackles, 0 goals 0 Behinds

The first part is ok, but when you are a forward your primary job is still to contribute on the scoreboard. Ballantyne is another who's been underwhelming this season with more than half his goals coming in 2 games. At least Mayne can point to his tackle numbers to semi-justify himself but Ballantyne isn't even pressuring like he used to.

you realise it was hard to secure a decent tall from 2012 to 2015 with the picks we had. we chose apeness, who is a ruck-forward, with our 1st pick in 2013 since mccarthy was gone by then. And no I would not traded mitch clark for picks 16 and 20 in 2011. we didged a bullet there. now we will get a top 5 pick

Bit like NicNat, stats don't tell the full story.

Naitanui as a ruckman still contributes with his ruck work, which is his primary role, even if he doesn't get touches.

Mayne with 0.8 goals a game is failing his primary role as a forward.
