"Matt Rendell began his league career with West Torrens where he played 79 SANFL games and kicked 39 goals between 1977 and 1980. He spent the next eleven seasons at Fitzroy, carving out a reputation for himself as one of the most consistent and imposing ruckmen in the VFL. Of massive build at 200cm and 102kg he was a dominant figure both at ruck contests and in general play around the ground. He won the Lions best and fairest award in 1982 and 1983, and captained the club from 1985 to 1987. A regular South Australian state of origin representative, Rendell achieved All Australian selection twice. At the end of the 1991 season, after 164 games and 104 goals for Fitzroy, he was intent on retirement, but Brisbane persuaded him to head north for one last season in which he added 13 games and 7 goals to his tally." - http://www.fullpointsfooty.net/r.htm

"In one of the most amazing games in V/AFL history, Rendell, who had not kicked a goal in his previous seventeen games for Fitzroy, was used as a seventh forward to counter North Melbourne's Gary Dempsey's habit of marking in the last line. The result was sensational: Rendell kicked eight goals and the Lions won a top-of-the-table clash by 150 points, which at the time more than doubled the previous biggest loss by a minor premier." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Rendell

Matthew Rendell played 164 games for Fitzroy between 1981 and 1991. He was a very tall ruckman who was also useful up forward as his 102 goals suggest. In fact, Rendell kicked 46 goals in his first season when Ron Alexander was the number one ruckman. He was recruited from South Australian team West Torrens. He won back-to-back Fitzroy best and fairest awards in 1982 and 1983. He was Fitzroy’s captain between 1985 and 1987. He played three times for South Australia in State of Origin games and achieved All-Australian selection in 1987. He played in seven finals games for Fitzroy kicking nine goals. He played one season with the Brisbane Bears at the end of his career. He has been an assistant coach at Richmond, Melbourne and Port Adelaide.

Swept away by a flood of goals

The date was May 3, 1992, and Walls was coaching the Brisbane Bears at Carrara. He had just had it pointed out to him that the Bears' opponent, Geelong, was a good chance of kicking the highest score in league history."Maybe with five or six minutes to go, Matt Rendell, who was out injured and was sitting in the coach's box with me, he said to me: 'Do you realise with the way Geelong's going, they're going to break that record score,' " Walls said last week.
"And he suggested that we perhaps put the first flood into place. I said to him, 'Matty, I couldn't give a stuff, we're so far gone it doesn't matter.'
"He said we could just load the back line, but I wasn't prepared to do that. I think I was a bold coach and when you are a bold coach, you're going to have a few triumphs, and you're also going to have a few days like that."

Rendell, standing at 200 cm, was a ruckman who made his debut with the West Torrens Football Club in the SANFL in 1977 where he played 79 games. He left South Australia in 1981 to play with the Fitzroy Football Club in the VFL, wearing the No. 9 guernsey. In his time there he won the 1982 and 1983 best and fairest awards, and was appointed captain from 1985-1987.

Despite this good form he played just one game with the Lions in 1988, the rest of the year spent in the reserves, which Rendell put down to a misunderstanding with coach David Parkin. Rendell's brother Tim was a promising ruckman who also played for West Torrens and was recruited by Fitzroy but did not play a game due to chronic injury.

Re: Matt Rendell great Fitzroy player...

Matt Rendell- was a good player for Fitzroy in his early days. It all went down hill from 1987 onwards...

He spent the entire 1988 season in the reserves. His retirement in 1991 didnt last too long...ended up playing a season with the bears in 1992.

Rendell was known as a bit of a bunny in his last few years, with many supporters questioning his desire and willingness to compete and lack of aggression for a ruckman.

Infact, I would go as far as saying he was one of the worst captains Fitzroy ever appointed and know for a fact he even knocked back signing kids autographs.

The best thing Fitzroy did was appoint Paul Roos captain directly after him....

Matthew Rendell: One of the all-time great Lions

Thirty-three years and one week ago today Fitzroy enjoyed one of its all-time great wins, beating North Melbourne by 150 points at Junction Oval.

The heroes were plenty. Les Parish had 39 possessions, and Bernie Quinlan and Mick Conlan each kicked seven goals. But enjoying his greatest game of all was big Matt Rendell.

A powerhouse in the ruck and a match-winner up forward, big ‘Bundy’ kicked a career-best eight goals. He scored a rare perfect ‘10’ in The Age Player of the Year voting and collected three Brownlow Medal votes as the Lions inflicted the biggest defeat ever on a side on top of the ladder.

It was a special day in a special career for the lad from West Torrens in Adelaide, who played 164 games for Fitzroy from 1981-91. Among in the best in the League in his prime, he was club champion in 1982-83, club captain from 1985-87 and All-Australian in 1983 and 1987.

He was also one of 13 people to play for Fitzroy and the Brisbane Bears ahead of the merger, having coming out of retirement to answer an SOS from his old mate and coach Robert Walls in 1992.

Since hanging up the boots he’s served the game far and wide. A smart football person and a shrewd tactician, with an eye for talent and an understanding of what it takes to make it in this ultra-competitive industry, he has filled coaching and recruiting roles at seven clubs - Melbourne, Sydney, Richmond, Port Adelaide, St.Kilda, Adelaide and now Collingwood.

But it all started at Fitzroy and he’ll forever be remembered as one of the all-time great Lions. Matt Rendell, a proud member of the Brisbane Lions Hall of Fame.
