Just wondering, do you honestly think this bloke could go down in history as the best FB ever?
I think so, but was wondering if I could get some Cat fans opinions and wasn't going to do this on the main board as it would probably get flamed.

Big call best in history he has been AA what twice or once. I would think he would need to be AA at least 4-5 times to be in consideration.

That aside i dont care how he is "rated", he is an awesome players for us and thats all that matters.

i honestly think scarlett should/will move down foward soon. yes i know how good he is down back, i see him everyweek, but he is just such a creative player imagine him up foward. down back we can cover him now egan has come along also with harley mooney and even dasher, but he should play midfield/wing more. not having ago a kk either or henry i rate them but imagine scarlett up foward, his pace, smarts, body work and crativity would be wowwwwwwww!

If it weren't for his poor start to this year it would be 3 times AA. As far as I'm concerned he's the best FB I've ever seen, better than Silvagni and that's saying a lot. I saw very little of Langford so I can't comment on whether he's better than Scarlo, but I have yet to see another fullback who provides the same sort of drive and possesses the same skill level as Matty.

That said, he'd probably have to back it up for the next 3 or 4 years in order to be considered the best, but I have no doubts he will go on to become an all time great.

No doubt he will be known as One Of The Best. I think that when push comes to shove, he will be known as better than Silvagni, but too close to call with Dench. Just my feeling.

Good call re. Langford btw, a hugely underrated and such a strong player. His effort on Ablett in the second half of the 1989 GF won them the game.

Care little for perceptions, he is a quality player - one well ahead of the pack.

Needs to be more motivated this season, though.

Silvagni gave Ablett quiet a few hidings ... and Ablett in his prime vs Scarlett - i know who i'd chose!!!

SOS was the best FB, Scarlo is the best atm but not the best ever - c'mon lets not get carried away as much as we love Matty Scarlo!!!

That's actually a very good point. I'd argue that Silvagni was up against far more high quality full forwards than Scarlett is now.

That said, Scarlett is the best I've seen in a while and if he keeps up his form for a few more years he'll be known as ONE of the best ever.

Gaz only played at full forward for the last 3 years of his career when he had a dodgy knee and was over 30, for Silvagni to towel him up a couple of times then was a good effort, but Gaz was not at his best.

The things that really stand out to me about Scarlo is his acceleration of the mark and his reading of the play. The number of times Matty hasn't just spoiled his opponent but actually marked the ball is testament to his ability. Silvagni was very good, but I just don't think he had quite the natural athleticism that Scarlett has.

I think there is also another valid point. Matty plays at a time when fullbacks are constantly penalised by the umpires. Mate if Matty could get away with the stuff the SOS' and the players of the era got away with, sh*t man he would be unstopable. SOS reckons he would have been lucky to play a few seasons at AFL the way it is umpired today. That is an exageration but not far off the mark.

i remember tony shaw made the statement earlier this year that scarlett would become the best full back ever. but as the person said before remember SOS played on dunstall, ablett, lockett, carey, modra and so on. Scarlo has lloyd, richo, fev and frasier. but he is a gun but just wait a bit before u start wondering if he is the best ever.

Move him up foward where he will dominate!!!!!!!

Apparently Bundy, Seinfeld and Cosby were decent full forwards too

I agree with alot of the posts his next 3 - 5 years will determine if he goes from good to superstar / legend.

The only thing stopping Matty becoming one of the greats is his attitude. Like big Fraser, you get the feeling he couldn't care less at times, and could walk away at any time.

Mike Sheehans article early in the year was testament to that.

The second half of the season he was back to his best, and yes his best feature when he is dominating is his ability to mark.

I remember when he played on Neitz in 2004 at skilled. He killed him, but in just about every one on one Scarlett marked. It was amazing.

Scarlett will never malk away from the game. He loves the club and in most of his few interviews has said something along those lines. In one he said he'd rather win a B&F than a Brownlow because it means his teammates and the club recognises him, anyone else doesn't matter. I think he was struggling early due to the fact that the backline was never settled and he didn't have Harley and Mooney there with him.

Mooney was down back, not sure what games you saw early.

I have a few mates who are quite close to scarlo and I think you would be surprised by flippant he is about it all. Yes he loves the club, and he loves to play well, but it is not the be all and end all for him. He is a very different individual, and nothing should surprise anyone.
