Do you think he could push into a midfield role at any stage? At the moment he plays a bit like Grant Birchall which is fine, but I hope he can be more.

It's possible that Scharenberg plays midfield in the future. I just don't see the major need with a good midfield group and the need for some quality down back. Particularly someone who can generate meaningful drive.

During the U18s Scharenberg was a mostly key defender who could also play some forward.

I, like you, see him as a Grant Birchall tall back flanker who can intercept and use the ball from defence. He can play taller as needed and be a bit of a Mr. Fix It who can beat opponents in the 1v1s but also intercept mark and provide some rebound by foot.

Aside from anything it was a feel good moment when he got his first possession and a nice response from the modest crowd. He has endured a lot to get himself back and should be commended. Did ok.

Is it just me or are most of his kicks short chips.

Want to see him take the game on more

Watching on TV you don't always get the down field view so hard to evaluate. I'm happy for him to take short options if they're better than the longer ones, and go long when the options present. Was it Shaz who rooster it long into F50 to the advantage of (I think from memory) Moore?

Playing a shorter side also lends itself to short sharp ball movement.

What part of his game looks like a midfielders? His speciality is marking and receiving handballs to dispose... He isn't fast enough to play an outside Mid and isn't a contested beast to play inside.

How much of Shaz have you seen this year, AFL and/or VFL?

His contested game is very good and he's probably only second to Pendles in terms of being able to create time and space for himself in congestion imo.

Looked like he belonged today, this kid is going to be marshalling our defense for many years to come.
Agree and with Howe we have two lovely disposal types.
Throw in Dunn it's a strong looking combo, then there's the beast Maynard, it's coming together

Are you talking about Pendles or Scharenberg? Because Pendles ain't quick nor a contested beast.

His spacial awareness, cleanliness and decision making is high end which would be his edge in a midfield role. I'm not keen to see it considered until Pendles calls it quits, but he could make the transition. My biggest concern would be tank. He struggled to adjust to the pace of the game early (according to Pendles on SEN post match), but that will come.

That's my feel also. He could develop into more of a contested ball winner but ultimately I haven't seen him dominate through there as a junior and considering his attributes I'm not seeing how he would as a mid be better than the next player - without that midfield specific point of difference.

Down back by contrast intercept marking relatively is his major asset, with kicking and 1v1 defence further relative strengths.

Good to see him in the AFL. Still pretty rusty understandably. As the weeks go by he will need to get a bit more involved in contests and attack the ball. Didn't really get a chance to get involved in many marking contests which is a pity as that is his strength. Had a couple of goals kicked on him but again forgivable given his 1st game. With Reid and Varcoe still 2-4 weeks away there won't be much immediate pressure on his spot so hopefully strings a few games together and confidence builds.

We're talking about Scott Pendlebury right? One of the highest average contested possession winners in the AFL? Not a contested beast? Are you for real? He's built like a brick wall

As far as a midfielder goes he doesn't strike me as having the attributes. His clear big weapon is his intercept marking and creating options as a backline outlet player. Not sure what his tank can become but looks low currently and is pace wise is relatively slow. Couldn't be an outside mid and so far I haven't seen any characteristics of a contested ball winner.

Someone earlier mentioned Grant Birchall. I think that's probably the perfect aim. If he could become even close to that level it would be a great result.

Notice that bit today how he good he is contested areas and just make time stay still at times

Fyfe, Martin, Dangerfield, Kennedy and Cripps are contested beasts. Pendlebury's are finesse where he pounced on balls in dispute whereas the others bust into packs and dish it out. Like Ablett, who also puts up fantastic contested ball numbers, he competes extremely well in one on one's, but doesn't bully the opposition.

So you could say I am for real and quite shocked to read your assessment of Pendlebury in that regard. Given Scharenberg's ability to read the play, in just his fifth game and in a defensive role he managed to win 41% of his ball in contested situations matching Pendles career rate of 41%.

FWIW Pendles is the equal 15th ranked contested possession player in the league in 2017 so he's good in that regard, but not one of the elite.

He's an average plodder in terms of pace.no way you can take that in to the middle. Whoever thinks he is midfielder is kidding themselves. Also has the turning circle of the queen mary.

Bit each way on Scharenberg's performance today, made some mistakes that he wouldn't make in the twos, but at other times didn't look out of place and held his own. Will be better for the run.
