Player managers have so much influence into what players say regarding their contracts in the media, you can't actually take any of it seriously.

I'd love a player to just come out and say "I love the club, I'm going to sign next week" and actually mean it.
Sounds like he wants to concentrate on his footy and leave room for his manager to negotiate a good deal, wherever he may play. Sensible really.

69 pages, 1720 posts, 88280 reads one AFL game something doesn't add up
Our first draft pick that high since Pendles/Thomas who at their peaks were in the top echelon of players in the entire AFL.

A lot of fans have hope Scharenberg will end up that good.

Interesting that he opted to do the interview if he was going to sandbag those questions, I wonder if the club organized it?

To me it makes sense that he wants to bump up his value, he obviously has confidence in his own ability which is not a bad thing. Maybe we low balled him with our previous offers and he's just getting advice from his manager that his contract value will only go up with senior exposure... hard to argue.

Perhaps he's playing his cards close to his chest until he gets a satisfactory offer from us, but at the same time that wouldn't prevent him from throwing the supporters a bone in the process.

If there's any consolation it's that it's on him to play well, both parties want the same thing in terms of his performance; he wants the best contract offer possible and we want a well-performing player or maximum trade value.

Hope he stays though.

So true. Motlop for example, said on TFS ages ago that he wanted to stay at Geelong and his contract would hopefully be sorted out soon. Still hasn't signed. It doesn't matter what players say publicly, you can't trust their word even if they do profess their undying love for the club.

What other teams?
Only a few seasons ago Cloke did the same thing .
All part of the game. Collingwood is not a charity organization and the Berg is looking after number one as he should. Leave the insults for the Daisy's of this world.
Right now it is a kid who is making a comeback after 2 years of injury and should get the respect that deserves. Something severely lacking here by a few.

I sat behind Schazza at Williamstown last Sunday, and I studied the back of his head intently. Being an accomplished reader of all things to do with the backs of heads (including hair style and length), I can categorically state that he loves us and is a shy and retiring type.:p

You should've put the hard word on him Vicky.

My list movement info is nowhere near as reliable as my team info, but the indications I've received are that it's by no means a sure thing either way so I wouldn't read anything much into the interview. I should add though that I don't believe we're putting ourselves forward perfectly to win his signature.

As in the offer to him isn't substantial enough?

He doesn't sound like a big talker and look at me type of guy. he looks very calm but serious about footy in what he has to do and achieve to get back to higher powers. An actions speak louder than words type of young man.

Manager would be telling him what to say anyway and I dare say Collingwood Media Department would also be told. You Hope

Collingwood have on numerous occasions publicly stated that they have squirreled away a kingsransom for trades and current players coming out of contract. If I was a young player recovering from injury and had the opportunity to play games before my contract expired, I would want to play as many games as possible. It could backfire and he could get injured again but if he plays for the rest of the season CFC might dig into their pockets a little deeper.

I don't think money's a factor.

What I do know is something that may be extremely minor (borderline trivial) for some, but it could be a major issue for others.
Disappointing if we are stonewalling on a trivial matter.

I get there is principle, and you don't want to set precedents to the rest of the list etc - but obviously we want him to stay so I don't get why they wouldn't just get it done.

I'm not entirely sure on this and worded my post quite poorly so I don't want to seem like I know exactly what I'm talking about. From what I can gather though it doesn't amount to us stonewalling him.

Sounds like it's just a piece of negotiation. Fancy that haha. As I'm obviously not an AFL footballer, I'd have no idea what goes into a contract outside of a $$$ figure. But given the type of character that he seems to be, could the potential issue be over public appearances, or something of that ilk?

Maybe given his injury history the club is looking to up the match payments vs base salary %? That's what I'd be doing with an injury prone type like a Reid or Brown or Sinclair.
