I don't think money's a factor.

What I do know is something that may be extremely minor (borderline trivial) for some, but it could be a major issue for others.
Shazza won't sign until Aish trade confirmed?? (Those sweating on Shazza signature would then have to wait until trade week and will be convinced he's gone!)

Other possibilities I'll throw out there:
Contract length could also be seen as trivial for some his age.
A week off for his girlfriends birthday / his parents anniversary / other milestone (wouldn't faze me too much if not in September):p & could even be for time during the week rather than match day.
Is Matt academically inclined - does he want study time?
(I liked someone else's suggestion that it could be a restriction on media appearances).

I guess he'll make his mind up in due course. It would be strange to leave after just two years but it's not unheard of I suppose.

I just hope he's not rushing the decision based on missing his family. In another year or two he probably won't want to live with his parents anyway and who knows where his brother will end up? Besides, didn't I read that he had a girlfriend in Melbourne?

In any case, If he's staying I will be satisfied with glimpses of promise over the next 5 games.

If he's leaving on the other hand, I hope he absolutely dominates so we don't get shafted in the process.

Give him a break. Just left school, brave new world, injured twice, burdened with expectations & no home front that's close. Not easy for a young man in his situation. Some do and some don't manage. If that is the case, he tried and it didn't work out.
We lure players to come back to VIC too. And on top of that. Even if he stays wait until his next contract ends , we will have the same saga again in 2 years.

Lacist.
Is it really that hard to leave your family when you're 18/19? It's not like you're in another country and never see them. I don't get it.

Depends who you ask. I left home when I was 18. And now I do live on the opposite side of the world from my family. Plenty of people that I left behind that didn't want to move more then 5km from their childhood and friends. I don't understand why either but I do accept there are people like that. Good as gold but needs a nest. He might fall in that category.

Having listened to the interview including all the waffle about putting his immediate football fist and being glad to get a game instead of rehab, I agree with the posters who say he is gone. Between him and Freeman, as has it has now transpired, we picked the least reliable long term players (except Aish).

How could we done that with Freeman? He had no Injuries Pre-Draft.

I do understand with Schranberg a Bit. As there was talk he could go home after 2 Seasons because of Homesickness Pre-Draft.

I read both he is Leaving and he is going. I believe the people more who are saying he is staying

The same thing happened with Broomhead. We all thought he was gone. From his managers perspective, signing at the last minute gives him the best leverage for the best deal. Pick 6, club has put a lot of time into him and from SA. His manager would know how much he's worth to us and that is plenty. Could also mean he intends on leaving.

I'd think spending almost 2 years in rehab and not mixing with the guys on the field could see him feeling left out, not that people wouldn't have made him welcome. Therefore he could miss home.

Seems a quiet, reserved lad and perhaps just doesn't like to talk about himself too much. I haven't listened to the interview but I'm happy to stick with what ~the Scout~ said. He's going nowhere.

You missed my 'as it has now transpired'. In other words, we didn't know it (about Freeman) at the time. But you are saying that we knew about Scharenberg's home sickness pre-draft? He was homesick before he even left home and we knew that but still drafted him!?

Funny, all I heard was the shy guy everyone appears to know he is, (nervous laugh when told his is an important signature).
Fair to say his manager would've told him to avoid the discussion all together - hence the apparent dodging.
Nothing he said swayed me one way or the other, which seems to be the MO when it comes to these things.

Brisbane still drafted Aish when everyone knew he would be leaving after 2 years.

Listening to that interview i think he is intending to go back home. Avoided the question when pressed by mcguane, better get a top 20 pick for him at least, especially if he finishes the year off well which is in both the clubs and scharenbergs best interests.

On a side note, love hearing micky mcguane talk football, a great football brain if there ever was one.

Don't be so negative. One moment we appeal to his emotions like club loyalty but friendships are apparently a no-no?Look on the bright side.
Would be fun if we can land Aish and Treloar and keep Scharenberg on top of that. And for the future: If they are best mates , what better chance to keep the team together and take unders to stay at Collingwood.
