Carey's situation would be different because he would still be on our pay roll because it was injury forced retirement. I would assume Carey would still be getting match payments for the rest of the year even though he is not playing but he did sustain the injury while playing for the Crows.
That being the case he would be on the long term injury list, which allows us to bring a rookie player up.

His form since crossing to the Bays has, on all reports, been outstanding. I would prefer to have a look at him, I saw Smith in the pre-season comp against Freo and I think he had one handball for the game - and he got plenty of gametime. Couldn't even hang onto a handball when someone else gave it to him!!

Granted, only one game, but he would want to have shown significant improvement.
They might have already made a decision on Parker.
Smith I believe has improved and the club may be undecided on his future.
Good idea to have a look.

I assume so.

Can I also add that is Smith has not improved his

a) disposal

b) ballhandling

c) and in the one on one contests

his promotion would be a WASTE of time.

We don't see him here in Victoria.
And the reports are varied and conflicting.
Some say he's a critical member of the Sturt lineup - some say nothings changed:confused:

Didn't Smith drop out of Sturt's side with a hamstring injury yesterday?

Hammy's take 3 weeks to heal so it would seem strange to elevate an injured player if that was Smith that dropped out.

I don't rate Smith at all. He's a fair SANFL player now at best after being in the system 4 years.

Having said that I suppose it's reasonable in one way to put him under the microscope under AFL conditions to see whether he will be around next year, or delisted.

On the other hand it's a kick in the teeth to the principle of having to earn a spot in the side. He certainly hasn't done that.

Overall it doesn't worry me one way or the other, but I'd be surprised if he's still around next year.

Would they play him as a defender or Forward?

As a defender it could only be FB where I believe he has been playing for Sturt.
HB line has Hentschell and Mcgregor.

Playing him as a forwrd, could he be a third tall or even tried at FF?
Never seen Smith playe decent footy as a forward, so should play as a defender, given that is where he has played for the Blues. All Sturt supporters I speak to rave about him ... but then again, they used to go about Nelson too. Whilst it would be good to make a decision on Smith as to whether he stays on our list (or not), Parker would have to feel hard done by if he is misses the 1st elevation.

As long as they explain to Parker that he will be elevated at the end of the season and they have a more pressing need to test Smith, should be no worries.

And of course Sturt fans raved about Ben Nelson - he was a bloody good SANFL player, nearly Magarey medallist last year. We tried him at AFL and he wasn't up to it. Same thing with Smith - he's been bloody good in SANFL apparently, so now we have to see if he's up to it at AFL.

IMHO I don't think any of us hve seen enough of him to know what he is like

If the powers that be ecide to promote him then in the context of the season we really have nothing to lose

Many of you thought Hentschell was a dud, many of us thought Bock was a dud adn they have both showed signs.

Put Smith on the list and lets have a look at him.

We can try and break the record for most players used in a season!;)

Pretty fair comments.

Have to remember he's only 21, and KPP of his height sometimes take time.

Remember back when McGregor started, I can imagine the comments that would have been posted about his future? He was so bad and seriously never looked like making it into the AFL ;)

How long did the complaints last about us choosing a dud in McGregor instead of Pavlich.
Now you won't trade him for a 1st round draft pick;)

So Smith may still prove us wrong.
His dad was a late maturer and only really started to play good footy at 25.

Like father like son:rolleyes:

Wouldn't it be great of he is the answer to our FB problems.:)

Lets hope he does a McGregor :)

Improving at SANFL level is one thing but making the transition to AFL is completely different.

But I'm prepared to reserve my judgement and go with the AFC judgement at this point - they should know best:rolleyes:

He was pulled out of the side out of the side for 2 reasons
a) he wasn't 100% fit - only 95%
b) the fact the club is due to elevate him

If you are right and they didn't play him because of those reasons, you would have to assume that upon elevating him to the main list he will play immediately?

Thats a fair assumption. AFC never promote a rookie unless he will play AFL straight away.

I am tipping that Smith will make his AFL debut against Melbourne if he is promoted. Blues_Girl usually is spot on with her sources from SFC.

That being the case would they announce it at there weekly press conference?

I'm looking forward to seeing him play then. Neitz or Holland would be a good first-up test for him.

fair go!
If Melbourne midfield is on then Neitz will get plenty of it.
I'm no Smith fan but at least give him a chance! It would be stupidity of the hightest order to expect anything other than a smashing in this match up. You really are trying to get rid of him aren't you Stiffy? :)

closer to the mark, i would have thought.

Who cares? He's had 4 years on the list, he can have a big first-up job.
