If Melbourne midfield is on then Neitz will get plenty of it.
I'm no Smith fan but at least give him a chance! It would be stupidity of the hightest order to expect anything other than a smashing in this match up. You really are trying to get rid of him aren't you Stiffy? :)
If you are elevating him to assess him for retaining on the list, why would you "hide" him or "ease" him into the game.

Give him the toughest job. He'll make mistakes a plenty, but this is an interview, not on the job training ;)

because far better players than Smith have copped a flogging from Neeta. What's it going to prove?

I thought the idea was to test him out, not destroy him?
Why not try him on Miller who has been playing CHF for the Dees this year, or as previously stated Holland?

That's fair enough too. I'm a long way off being a Smith fan - a long way - but fair's fair.

If he gets promoted to the main list, then he has to start somewhere, but to expect a first gamer to stand Neitz is ridiculous - unless it's part of an overall plan to ensure that we DO get a priority pick.

Standing a Miller or a Holand would be a reasonable first-up test.

Personally, I don't think he'll make it, but would love to be proven wrong.

But macca he's not there to get started.
He's there to see if he can cut the mustard.
Not expecting him to be the new Southby, but put under the spotlight, don't shield him.
What will you learn otherwise????

Neitz would be a good measuring stick for him.

Holland would also be a good match up.
Out of these 2, I would play Smith on Holland & have him run-off Dutchy at every opportunity. Could also play him on Robertson. The Hound should play on Neitz & Kenny on Miller.

How about a trade then? If you tell me yours, I'll give you my recipe for a fantastic pesto and tomato sauce I've perfected :D

How can you not like pesto?

But fine, I will substitute it with a lovely eggplant and mushroom lasagna.

Goody was on 5AA and he just gave the biggest wrap to Smith. He said when he first came to the club he was raw as hell and was one of the most uncoordinated players he has seen but has improved out of sight this year. He has beefed up big time and his engine is HUGE. Goody also said that Smith is the 2nd strongest player at the club behind Roo. He has been playing well for Sturt and Goody has no doubt that he will be given a chance by the end of the year and prove that he is good enough to play AFL footy.

As a leader of the "lets bag Matthew Smith" squad, I would gladly eat humble pie if proven wrong. It would be bloody fantastic if Goody is right and Smith develops into a FB we need.

Will be following this situation with interest.

Heard the saying "built like Tarzan, plays like Jane"
Good wrapping can sometimes diguise the product.

Lets see it translate to something meaningful, until then quoting you with Mattner, I'll reserve judgement.

If Smith is upgraded for FB, what happens to Parker? Does Andrews stay on the Rookie list if he's agreeable which I maintain he will.

If Smith is upgraded to the main list this year as a replacement for a long term injury, that's not a permanent elevation.

At the end of the season he goes back onto the rookie list to be dealt with in the same way as any other rookie.

So it's just basically a chance for him to show what he's capable of doing?

All the Sturt supporters I speak to rave about Smith, so would be good to see him get an opportunity so we can make up our mind once & for all.

On Parker, we should elevate at the end of the year, as he has been a rookie for 2 years & has shown enough IMO to be given a go.

Reckon Andrews is still raw, so keep him on the rookie list for another year like we did with Parker.
