Based on that he would have to get a game for Aus as a batsman. No good having a keeper who drops basic chances!

I agree he drops basic chances but he can take brilliant ones aswell. He's so young that in about 3-5 years when Haddin retires he will have improved his consistancey and i fell he will be the next keeper for Australia.

His keeping is not great. Paine, manou, and Hartley are all better.

Thanks for that.

The more I see Haddin drop catches, the more I think we have to be careful not to go overboard on picking someone based on batting ability. If one dropped catch costs 50 runs, then that's 50 runs the keeper has to make just to get back to square. Once you add on byes + runs that a better keeper/weaker batsman makes, you can see that the next keeper might need to be Adam Gilchrist to make up for failures with the gloves.

Just one or two drops cost you big time.

Similarly, a top notch slipper is worth 10 runs on his average, I used to bag Mark Waugh for not making enough runs. Didn't think through the consequences of dropping/not dropping catches in slips. Just think of Marcus North dropping Kallis on zero.

For mind Paine still is the keeper for the future as he has shown he can bat and is a good keeper. If Wade works on his keeping then he could get a shot.

3 more catches to break wade secombes record for catches/stumpings in a season...

In the Tasmanian (yes he's originally Tasmanian) U/19 carnival he beat Ricky Ponting's runs record which says something considering he's also a good keeper. I always thought he was better than Crosthwaite but he wasn't showing to much early. I would rank him 2/3 choice keeper behind Haddin and maybe Paine.

as a keeper haddin hasn't shown much since taking the test mantle.

And by the sounds of it this Wade is a worse keeper than Haddin....

I thought we gave up batsmen who keep with Wayne Phillips

Hey Dan how come you haven't come to Saintsational since you said Philip Hughes was crap?

No remind me - was that before or after he became the youngest player in history to score a century in both innings :o:o

Oh thats right he only got there because he was from NSW wasn't it?

Is Hodge still better than Katich (you know the bloke that has scored 5 centuries for his country in the past twelve months)? :D:D

Had he not dropped a huge amount of catches during the season, he would already have got the record.

He is no where near as bad as you are suggesting. He has the right mechanics and is consistently improving.

As it stands, unless Haddin is injured, the keeping spot will not be available for at least 3 years and as we are all well aware - a lot can change in that time. If Wade continues to improve as he has done this season - he would have to be a reasonable chance to take over. A lot of water to go under the bridge between now and then though.

*grabs popcorn and waits*

Seriously though, great post. Look forward to his reply:p

you would hope he was improving because he was starting at a pretty ordinary level.

I have been told from a "VERY RELIABLE SOURCE" that Paine has not dropped a catch all season. thats the standard we want keeping for Aus, imagine dropping Kev on zero and he makes 200. that means Wade needs to score 200 to cover his drop. Paine is the man for the job as he also has the right 'mechanics' with gloves and bat not just with the bat with a ok keeping level

Paine is also 3 years older so you would expect him to be more consistent.

I like Paine and agree he is the better keeper now. I think Wade has the tools to become a good keeper.

As it stands, unless Haddin is injured he is going to be around for a few years anyway.

I have seen both keep plenty of times. When Paine was Wades age, Paine was much, much better.

I can't believe how bad the suggestions of his keeping are on this site.... Was it mentioned before about the catch/stumping record for the year...?? Hi is only 21 and has very good footwork and quick hands on him... He hasn't dropped that many catches... You are all painting the picture of a guy with no arms... He WILL be our next keeper in 2-3years... He has a great batting technique and always thought he was better than Crosswaite... He will have time to deveop and imporve in those 2-3 years and become a great keeper first and foremost... Better than Haddin and perhaps par or greater that Gilly... Not near Healy's level but give him time and he might be later on... although alot of people on here do like to try and cut a kid down before he has his shot....

Ease up on the Aussie's Next Keeper... We should be encouraged by this kid not trying to point out his faults and put a spotlihgt on them...

Geez....

end rant

Are you from England jacky boy? You love the idea of picking a bloke who can't keep but can bat.

Hughes used to keep a bit why not give him the gloves!

Remember Jacky, Wade wasn't born in Victoria so claiming him as Victorian and the greatest doesn't really make sense.

Had Paine, Manou, or Hartely all had the Victorian bowling attack to provide edgges, they would have broken the record. That record doesn't fully indicate keeping ability.

Exactly. It annoys me when number of dismissals are thrown up as some sort of measurement of wicketkeeping ability. Ideally, it should be based on total dismissals / total chances to provide a percentage on proportion of chances converted. It's not perfect as sometimes really hard chances are only chances through technicality, and sometimes there's contention as to whether it's the keeper's or slip's catch. Also, some keepers have the ability to get to balls that others can't - watch Gilly and how tall he is. He's able to dive away down the leg side or leap high to take high balls that someone like Chris Hartley wouldn't have got anywhere to. But it's still a better indication than number of dismissals.

a guy with no arms, you’re discriminating against people with no arms mate, fair go.

We are not cutting him down on here, just putting Victorians in their place as he isnt second in line. Get your heads out of your own arses and accept he is going to be a gun in the future, wait till he is 24-25 then he will be ready. 3 digs dont equal Aus call up

Good call Bigcat, totally agree

Look very solid with the bat thats for sure. From what I have seen his glovework does need a little bit of work. Very good prospect for sure.

In terms of "reach", these are some height measurements:

186cm Gilchrist
181cm Manou
180cm Haddin
180cm Paine
170cm Wade
169cm Hartley

Gilly was a bit of a freak to have such excellent agility despite his height.

Hence me saying that in 2,3 or 4 years when haddin is at the end he looks like the logical replacement.... He will be about 24-25years old and have gained some great experience keeping to Nannes, Harwood, and McGain... All who would set him up to be a good keeper in the future.... I realise he isn't a Vic but playing for us gives him great exposure and opportunity to keep to one of the best attacks in the Australian Comp.

I mentioned in the future he would be better than haddin and parhaps gilly... I obviously meant in keeping ability and not an overal player... But who know's... Would struggle to get anywhere near Gilly....

I threw out the statistic about dimissals to bring to people's attention who may not know about the kid. If they had read the rest of the posts on here it would sound like he is the worst keeper in Australia.... Just trying to give a bit of positivity to the kid....

Also i said he would be Australia's NEXT keeper... I believe haddin has another 3 or 4 years in him and am not mentioning that Wade would be ready before then.... If Haddin get's injured i would be all for Paine or maybe Manou getting the call up but this kid in my opinion will surpass them in the coming years and perhaps with the introduction on Hughes the selectors may look for youth...? Who knows... I would probably like him to apply his trade for another year or two with the Vic's before being brought into the spolight like Hughes and Warner have....

Ohhh and low blow with the comment am i from England.......

Cheers
Jacky

i don't go on Saintsational much any more at all Joffaboy.

as for Hughes, well he's done well since selection.

Still think he's lucky to be selected as early as he has been given the outstanding season by Rogers who can probably consider himself unlucky to miss out despite an outstanding season and an outstanding career, but there you go.

Although in fairness his selection far more appropriate than international selections of rubbish like haurorwitless, kreja, gavin robertson, and shane lee in recent years.

As for Wade, he has done outstanding well given his years and experience.

and yes I think gilchrist's keeping was always undervalued as people were drawn by his exciting batting.
