I know he gets talked about in Haddin's thread but I thought he deserved his own thread.
I think he should get selcted from test one ahead of Haddin but I'm guessing that won't happen. But what are peoples thoughts on him being included in the squad(not side) as a batsman?

If he makes runs in the tour game he might well jump the queue. Backup batsmen is a bit of an issue atm.

Certainly better than Haddin. He should be in the ODI team no matter what, even if CA feel the need to play Paine, Wades numbers still justify him making the one day side as a batsman.

there's not a need for a middle order batsman currently so no. once hussey and ponting have gone and there's one middle order spot free - watson taking the other - he might be able to take it but that won't happen for awhile yet.
I quite clearly said squad not side.

Well I want Paine in the test team as keeper so Triffet continues to be Tassies keeper!

But as for a batsman role, I'm not sure. There would have to be better batsman in the country, but just in a rough trot or injured surely? Wade's performances have been good, didn't realise they were that good..

edit: for test anyway

Well if one of the middle order batsmen goes down injured it is a free for all on who replaces them.

He's a bit overrated, I feel. Very inconsistent for Victoria and often goes missing when the side is in serious strife.

Better than Haddin though.

His got Victoria out of trouble a few times in the four day games this season.

IMO he should be in for Haddin but it wont happen.

i feel the selectors are inclined to stick with Paine, and so wade will be stuck on the edge for a few years. Anyone know when Paine might be back for Tasmania?

I would love Wade in the side, just coz i love cheering on a Vic (siddle doesnt count coz he's shit). But I don't mind Paine. Haddin must go, and soon.

Batting at 7 there's plenty of times when it's too late to fix it, but nah on this. Wade's stepped up plenty of times. There was a season a couple back where it seemed like him and Hastings were saving Vic's bacon every second match

With 4 hundreds out of his last 11 innings in one day cricket, if he's not in the ODI squad, at the very least, just for his batting, then it's a joke. 4 hundreds out of his last 11 innings. That's Brad Hodge like. Imagine if we continue to have two in our state team who are peeling off the runs like that are don't get selected for Australia?

Paine and Wade are both on par with each other - and both better than a 34-YO Haddin.

Wade is slightly better with the bat IMO. Also Wade has a higher take rate which can be put down to having better pacemen over their respective careers.

That said Wade should be in the side ahead of Bhaddin.

As for Paine, CA are using the paine injury to continue with bhaddin.

Paine and Wade are both on par with each other - and both better than a 34-YO Haddin.

Wade is the better batsman now than Paine. He has just hurt more teams with the bat than Paine who always looks solid and some of his low scores won matches on pitches where 160 was a good score but Wades big score ratio wins.

Wade though is no superman behind the stumps. he takes some nice catches at times but also drops some and is not clean to the spinners.

But Paine's injury run goes into a second season now and the selectors have to be wary of the long term problems for a keeper with that level of injury to their hand. I think Wade has second spot, soon to be first.

Wade's a much better batter than Paine now and hes 3 years younger, his average is superior, scores more hundreds and bats at a faster rate

Yeah Hartley and Nevill. But there's obviously more to it than that. Like, if people are expecting Wade to be a noticeably better keeper than Haddin...I dunno know. You could probably expect that from Paine onwards but not Wade imo. But Wade is a noticeably better batsman than the other keepers and probably Haddin currently (although if Wade's gonna be coming out to bat with a shit score on the board most of the time I don't think there's much he can do.....). It all depends on what you want.

Paine has made 1 FC ton from 84 innings at an average of 31.62 and 5 OD tons from
79 innings at 34.67

Wade has made 4 FC tons from 72 innings at 39.32 and 4 OD tons from 30 innings at 43.59

I can't believe Paine is still being talked as the automatic replacement for Haddin once fully fit.

Paine is a much better keeper. I feel Wade is similar to Haddin in his keeping style, would much prefer Paine. Paine can also be a very good batsman, he's had to bat with a weaker team for a while and also on a worse pitch.
