Draft Profile Matthew Watson

Most have us taking Watson at 18, and it all sounds like a match made in heaven and all. But I have some questions

1) Is it true that he could slide straight into AFL football, specifically CHB (which seems a bit of a black hole for us, especially if Waite stays forward), as some have stated? How similar is he to Hurley?
2) If his kicking is as good as people say, could he be the answer to our kick-in woes?
3) Why is McCarthy better for us, given he seems more a running player ala Bower?
4) Will fitness be an issue? And what are the chances he could turn into Tomahawk II?
5) With so much apparent upside, why the hell would no-one take him before 18?

TBH I hate the "ready to go" description of the talls.

They are all crap.

There has been hardly any talls in the last decade that have been ready to go from day-dot.

Especially defenders.

Hurley did O.K, but then again, I wouldn't associate that years performance with the "ready to go" attitude most people plaster them with.

The reality is, most of these talls weights are misleading, they are carrying a good 5-10% more puppy fat than a seasoned key position player, and thus, are all realistically around 10kg's lighter, or at a significant disadvantage in strength.

I think Watson will do O.K as a third tall next year, but will struggle on the mobile types.

If he gets given a job on an athletic tall, such as a Pavlich, Franklin, Goodes etc, expect him to be eaten up and gobbled out.

For his first couple of seasons at least.

i certainly dont see him as a chb, and you could very well be on the money with regards to harleys position. i also wouldnt be suprised to see him play as a foward, either in the beggining or down the line. he isnt a natural foward but he has those traits that could see him be effective in a foward that line that gets good service from its midfielders.
Long term, CHB is the best spot for a big defender who isn't quick off the mark like Jamison, but has good repeat efforts on top of a footy brain. The Blues need Watson playing CHB or taking the bigger bodied forwards such as Koschitzke, Cloke, Tippett, Kennedy and the rest. Watson's repeat sprint was only fractionally slower than Brad Sheppard's, yet he would be ahead of Nathan Brown who took Nick Riewoldt.

I don't want a player who can kick 50 plus stuck on the last line and out of the action like Gibbs.

The top sides support their defenders with zones, but none of them really have a defender with a cannon for a leg.

I want to see Watson hit it out in front of Yarran, Garlett, Simpson, Buckley and Walker on the wing with a paddock in front of them.

In an interview with CFC TV, Watson said he played ruck and CHF with Pascoe Vale from under tens to under 16s.
