Cats save best form until the very last

Key position prospect Matt Watson also stood tall and contested well against Cameron Mooney at times. The Blues were cautious with their defenders - Paul Bower and Simon White both copped knocks - after losing Michael Jamison to injury during the pre-season.

''It was great to give Watson a go,'' Ratten said. ''He's one kid that will get a game this year. We're not sure if it's round one or round 20-odd, but he just shows that he can really play at this level, which is encouraging.''

Forget which Cats player it was, but Watto absolutely flattened him when there was a 50-50 ball and he then followed up after dishing it off and speared it inside 50. Crowd absolutely loved it!

^^^ This. Very disciplined and smart defender....Does the basics very well....will shape his body, get fitter and really build on a great base.

Edit: Damn you zee...foiled again for not quoting

How good was his defense in a marking contest! There must have been 4 occasions where he was either one out or fighting in a 50-50 and he would always manage to get a fist to the ball even if out of position.

I'd like to see him take the kick outs more so we can build the call of 'woof!' a little more quickly. ;)

Congratulations Watto. :thumbsu:

I've been thinking for a while that our game vs the Suns would be a perfect game to give Watto a taste of AFL footy early in the season, but wasn't sure it would happen.

Credit to him he has been selected so hopefully he does himself and the club proud which I am sure he will.

Not sure he'll play too many senior games in 2011 but this certainly shows he's there or there abouts. May only play a week but it should give him some great insight into what is expected from him from here on in.

Best of luck Watto - really looking forward to watching him on Saturday night.

The hardest kick

Players that kick their way out of defence are like gold.

AMID the slaying of the Gold Coast on Saturday night and the dire headlines about the new club that have ensued, keen observers have commented on the booming kick of Carlton debutant Matthew Watson.

Watson, the Blues' top pick in last year's national draft, had a penetrating left foot recruiters raved about last season - and showcased it with three of his six kick-ins classified as long and effective by Champion Data.

"The ball tends to explode off his boot. He has got something about his kicking action that he can kick a long way," legendary Blues full-back Geoff Southby, who also boasted a booming kick, noted yesterday.

"It's pretty good playing in your first game and having that responsibility - regardless of the level of competition on the night.

The hardest kick

Alright guys, it's about time we really get the 'woof' thing going.

I'll be watching live on TV from 8.30 onwards (work :(). I expect mum to complain about the volume every time Watson gets a kick.

"WOOOOOOOFFFF"!!!!!!!

If not, I shall be very disappointed in you all. :p

Pardon the interruption, was watching the game tonight and apart from looking like a real talent, Watson is an absolute dead ringer for Brett Johnson, former Hawk/Blue and current Williamstown captain.

The number, the hair, the way he kicks the ball on this left side, could've sworn it was a younger, taller Johnson.

Watson looked pretty good for a first-gamer against the Suns, and I was happy that we kept him in the team this week. I think the more games we can get into him as soon as possible, the better off we will be. I'm glad he was in the team to play the Pies, as they have some quality tall forwards so I knew it would be a valuable learning experience for the young bloke. I wasn't expecting miracles, just hoping that he could put in a solid game and not get demolished out there, and put in a good effort. I think he did that pretty well tonight.

Good luck to the kid and I hope he stays in the team from now on, even if he is a walking toffee-apple.

Disappointed I didn't hear a 'woof' echo around the G when he kicked on Friday night :(

What I found disappointing was he didn't seem to take many kick outs on Friday night, Jr seemed to do most of them.

We thus appeared to struggle to get the ball out and dicked around with short kicks alot. I thought that was one reason Watto was in the side; to use his long boot on occasion and get it up near the wings?

Looked great with the ball in hand, always made the right decision and executed it perfectly. I loved the confidence that he showed when he took those two marks inside defensive 50. Showed a lot I thought, plenty to like about him.

I seriously can't get over the fact that he isn't a Yugoslav.

I'm going to add him to the Yugoslav looking (yet non-Yugo) players list:

1. Daniel Bradshaw
2. Matthew Watson.
I'm also going to make another addition to this 'Looks Yugoslav, but non-Yugo' list:

1. Daniel Bradshaw
2. Matthew Watson
3. Charlie Dixon

I'm not sure how this nominee was overlooked for this long, but he is deserving of his place on he the list.

2. Matthew Watson
3. Charlie Dixon
4. Brian Lake
