....nerd

Whelan is as tough as they come with the skills to match. Maybe you should actually see him play before making another statement.

ofcourse whelan wouldnt make AAT he has played 6 games

BUT

if anyone has seen them, they would KNOW that he is definatly a good player and a very tough one. sure he aint a star but what back pockets are?

i'd be very surprised if he didnt make AAT within the next couple of years.

so Whelans a gutless thug who has a cry everytime he gives away a free kick?

one of the most important players to our side... we've lost 3 games this season, and he didn't play in one of them... 2 of those games the opposition small forward practically won the game off their own boot (Mark Williams with 8 goals and Jeff Farmer with 7 goals)...

i don't think he'll get all australian, however he is one of our most important players...

Don't think he's much like Johnson.

Johnson is an attacking, unaccountable back pocket. Absolutely awesome when the side is flying but gets exposed when they're struggling.

Whelan is your traditional, defensive back pocket who locks down on his opponent. Good player and I agree that he's underrated.

He's a better player than Johnson already.

Johnson has proven this year how much of a front-runner he is. Without Michael and Leppitsch in-form around him, i haven't heard Johnson's name mentioned once this year. He is simply a good player in what has been a great defensive unit.

Whelan, on the other hand is a very good player in what is a fairly ordinary defensive unit if you compare Nicholson and Ferguson to Michael and Leppitsch. I have no doubt that Whelan will be All-Australian back pocket this year providing he plays the remainder of the season. I cannot remember the last time he was beaten by his direct opponent. He is the second most important player at Melbourne behind Jeff White and by season's end opposition fans will realise this.

Blokes like James Clement are praised week-in week-out and will most probably be AA. People spoke glowingly of Clement's match against Richmond in which Brown kicked 5 goals on him in one quarter. Brown kicked 4.4 on C Johnson the week prior to playing Melbourne. Whelan kept Brown to 2.0.
