Here's the thing. You are all saying "Mattner is a wingman". Craigy refuses to play him there for reasons he knows and understands. Mattner himself has said he prefers to play back. I don't agree with him being played "out of position". He may start on the ground in the back, but he still spends a fair bit of time running up and down the flanks (often getting caught). Craig has always demanded flexibility. Hell even Perrie has been shoved into the back lines because of injuries. He's not setting the world on fire, he's certainly not complaining. And he's putting his head down and bum up, trying to play the best he can. Marty has been dropped three times now, which indicates to me that there's something else happening with him.

But the fact is Marty is seriously struggling in defence, whereas when he's not there in the past he has looked good, he's not a defender. One of Craigy's strengths is that he backs in his players and persists, we wouldnt have been as successful and seen the drastic turnaround we saw when he first became coach but theres upsides and downsides, I think Marty needs a change of scenery-out of defence. Also yeah, when did he say he's happy in defence? Theres a difference between not complaining about it and saying you're happy there.

He said he'd play wherever his team needed him, no matter where he is.

No way is that his preferred position though, once a wingman, always a wingman!

When has Mattner said he's happy down back?

He said it at our post-match function after the Kanga's game earlier this year. We'd had a good win, and I wondered if he was toeing the party line but I asked him again later when I drove the players back to the hotel and he re-iterated it. So I'm pretty convinced he was saying what he felt.

Saw the last bit of the Sturt game on ABC. No Marty Mattner...was he injured or did he NOT play??

I can see what Craig is trying to do with him down there. Unforutnately it isnt coming off for a number of reasons.

Symes for Mattner?

It's more about analysing Marty's skill set and determining where it would most benefit the team.

Pros: Pacy - likes to run - penetrating kick - great tackle - will take opposition on
Cons: Can be caught with the ball - questionable disposal at times - can lose opponent in trafffic.

.....this is not the skill set of a defender - it will cost you goals. Better that this kind of player is playing on a wing - bringing a bigger body to the mix in the middle - if he gets the ball forward of centre - he can run to 50 and have a ping.

Whether he likes it in defence or not - his game is not suited there

Whether we like him on the wing or not - he is not getting played there! :p

sorry guys and girls but in todays football all players need to be flexable whether that means playing back or forward. look how blighty turned the club around in 97,98 with the injuries we have down back we have to plug holes. if thats where he needs to play for the team so be it.......and if he cant play to instruction hes not much help

There are more players who should be playing down back that aren't. Marty is an attacking footballer, so he should be playing on the wing or beyond.

I might be going out on a limb here, and correct me if I'm wrong, but...

I think Neil Craig knows more about coaching the players of the Adelaide Football Club than any of us.

Just a thought.

Of course I take your point, but I don't know that it is relevant in the context of there being a difference between a level of knowledge - and then choosing to apply it consistently.

Economists are trained the same - yet develop an allegiance in terms of their rationalist or interventionist persuasion.

Neil Craig might know more about coaching than the collective here - but it's a matter of how he chooses to apply that knowledge in the context of how he sees the playing group and individuals evolving and performing roles.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion - regardless of their credentials

Of course. 100% agree.

But to say that Craig is "dead-set wrong for not playing Mattner on a wing" is wrong in itself. How do we know what is really going on there? Perhaps Mattner has discussed his lack of confidence with Craigy and they're playing him as a defender? Perhaps Craigy thinks that Knights, Reilly and Douglas will end up being better as wingman, so he is giving them more time there?

I know we all like to pretend we know what is going on. I've seen a lot of football, but we're all armchair experts here. Opinion is fine. But don't say that we know what is really going on.

Actually, now i am very interested. What would you ask for a trade for him? Swap for Sean Rusling (who has done less cos of injury but does have potential)? Pick30ish?

When it looks wrong, smells wrong and tastes wrong then its probably wrong regardless of whose making the decision.

There have been smarter and better coaches than Craig in the history of the game who've made bigger errors than this, so he's hardly going to be infallible.

Ok, so is he right in playing Mattner in the backline?

Lets put Perrie in the ruck then.

You play your best players in their best positions - not where you think they could play to teach them a lesson.

He may be an attacking footballer, and if that's the case, he's not a very good one. Doesn't get nearly enough of the ball for mine.

He does have a penetrating kick WHEN he uses it, but more often than not he tucks the ball under arm and off he bolts and then puts himself in a panic and get's caught. He hasn't got the smarts to make decisions on the run - which is an unfortunate fault in someone who's strength is his run.
