Matty Bate - VFL awaits

He should not be dropped after 1 game, or subbed. That's the shit that led Ricky Bobby to a month in the magoos!

Give him a freaking chance against NORF.

Definitely worth playing him another game. Hasn't played a senior match for close to a year. He seemed to play at Full Forward for a lot of the game, which I'm sure he's not used to. I'd prefer to see Dunn at Full Forward as he is a bigger body than Bate. Bate's strength is his running capabilities and should be played more across the flanks. Definitely would like to see Dunn used as a Full Forward more often...

Bate's stats looking shocking for yesterday, but he had a very unlucky day.

He made good leads that weren't rewarded, he chased and presnted very well, and he tried hard all day. He worked very hard for his 6 possessions and on a slightly more lucky day he could have ended up with 15 touches and 4 goals from the work he put in yesterday.

He definately deserves another week to try and turn it around. I honestly don't think the coaching staff would be upset with his game yesterday. He tried hard and worked hard and that's what the coaching staff would be looking for

Bate was not that bad.

You can't just look at the stats. He offers something that most others don't do on a consistent basis. He always competes’ and always tries his a** off.

He was like others have mentioned, very unlucky yesterday and in no way got reward for effort. The good thing about sauce nuts is he is a repeat leader, opening up space for others to use.

In saying this with all guns blazing he is not in our best 22. I just think he did enough of the non statistical stuff to earn another game against North.

He dropped a heap of sitters. Hopefully it was just one 'woke up on the wrong side of the bed' type of day... it will be very interesting to see how forgiving they are to him.

Yeah, the 'was unlucky' and 'got no reward' comments are rubbish to me. He tried and competed hard, yes, but he cocked it up almost anytime he went near it.

Classic example was when Jamar won a freekick in the centre square, dished it off to Bate who was then run down from behind.

He was, more or less, terrible, but I don't like seeing players dropped after a week in the seniors, particularly when they haven't been playing at AFL level for a long time. He needs the opportunity to re-adjust to the pace of senior football, and also to be given the chance to prove his worth.

Leave him in, at least for now.

Good call, forgot about that. I gave Jamar a bake at the ground over that, but in hindsight, Bate should never have called for it. Total lack of awareness, and this seems to be Bate's major problem. He drops a lot of marks because he feels the pressure from behind. Doesn't mean the spoiler will actually spoil the ball, but he lacks that awareness of knowing where the opponent is. That handball from Jamar was a good example, as Bate had 3 Crows players running at him from behind when he called for it.

Let's judge him on his next game, and if he still struggles to make an impact, Newton, Cook or Howe are waiting for his spot.

He was ordinary today but give him one more week to see if he comes good.

Although Bate was poor today do you think the fact he took a quality defender allowed players like Watts to be freed up a bit?

Yeah, don't throw out the Batey with the bathwater just yet.

Well bate is a lead up player who likes to be the link up man, so he requires a defender who is good at playing against that type of player. Jack is somewhat similar in that the opposition defence needs to put someone who plays well on lead up players, so I guess it cuts down their choices of who plays on who.

Bate also seemed to unclutter the forward line because he either led into the pocket or outside 50 to receive the ball. In short he helped with our structure up forward.

Said it in a previous post in this thread, we need Dunn to play a bit more like this, then we have a more valuable/versatile player in Dunn creating this forward line stability & we can replace Bate with someone else. I don't see any reason why he couldn't do this when forward & while it worked against Adelaide, both don't really fit in the same team

Rubbish. Bate doesn't have eyes in the back of his head. Jamar was the one who made the mistake. He should never have handballed it to Bate. Bate was doing the right thing trying to provide the run from behind, and if Jamar had of given the handball the first time it would have been fine. Jamar held the ball too long, then handballed it at a stupid time.

After said handball, Jamar stood in the middle of the ground wondering what just happened, while Bate ran back deep into the backline to try and spoil the ball coming in from the freekick.

He is simply too slow to the contest and hen he does get the pill he is too slow with his decision making and ball release. I would think Morton could do whatever Bates role was last Sunday only better.

sorry no morton does not have the size or heart atm to provide contests at least bate puts his body on the line :thumbsu:

Keep playing Bate until he has a couple of half decent games, then hide him for the rest of the year and someone might offer up a late second rounder for him in October.
