Confirmed by club: access to two state league players to either add to list or on-trade ahead of draft

Reported that GC will get access to three state league players plus two extra Cat A rookie spots.

I'd prefer if we kept this thread PP discussion free. The decision has been made; let's work out what to do with what we have been given, rather than whinge about what we weren't...

Here are some player profiles. Not a comprehensive list, but I want to start off with something. Disclaimer: I don't watch much state-league footy, so this is all stuff grabbed from the interwebz. I welcome those who know much more to make comment on these guys and suggets others. POLL ADDED ABOVE.

PLAYER PROFILES

Sam Collins, Werribee, 24yo, KPB, 194cm, 98kg

Intercept-marking machine. Like a Jeremy McGovern Type. Played for Oakleigh Charges, undrafted, played for Box Hill Hawks, recruited by Freo in 2015 at pick 55 as mature-ager. Cut after 2 years, went to Werribee, where he has been dominating the VFL. Article here.

Could be suitable for Carlton if Jones is traded. More likely on-trade candidate.

Josh Corbett, Werribee, 22yo, Med-FWD, 190cm, 90kg

Strong marking medium forward. Strong contested mark, lots of marks inside 50. Has a good tank. Funnily enough sounds like Mitch McGovern. Was a bit player for North Ballarat Rebels, spent the last three years at VFL, slowly improving. Had glandular fever last year. Kicked 22 goals from 9 games this year. Won the Fothergill-Round Mitchell Medal (VFL young B&F). Has been invited to Draft Combine. Article here.

Would be suitable for Carlton IF we weren't into McGovern. More likely on-trade candidate.

Shane McAdam, Sturt, 23yo, Small-FWD, 185cm, 84kg

Livewire forward. He’s quick, he tackles, he’s good overhead and he’s got a good goal sense (apparently from an AFL recruiter). Played for Claremont for a few years, moved to Sturt this year. Sounds like he has been getting better as he has built up fitness. McAdam impressed at the WA state draft combine by equalling Naitanui’s running vertical jump record (102cm from reach height), finishing first in the 20m sprint (2.89 sec) and second in the agility test (8.04 sec) but was ultimately overlooked by AFL clubs. Kicked 31 goals from 17 matches in SANFL this year. Article here (paywall). Originally from Halls Creek (SPS territory).

Would be very suitable for Carlton.

Michael Gibbons, Williamstown, MID, 23yo, 175cm, 73kg

Dominant VFL midfielder. Equal winner of Liston Trophy (VFL B&F) in 2018, 2nd in 2017, winner in 2016. This year led the VFL in possessions, kicks, clearances, inside 50s, 3rd in uncontested possessions. VFL team of the year last three years. Guessing his size has kept him from getting drafted. Article here (basic info on Gibbons plus stuff on other top VFL candidates).

Would be suitable for Carlton (if he is deemed good enough for AFL level).

Marlion Pickett, South Fremantle, MID, 26yo, 183cm, 85kg

Well-rounded, hard at it midfielder. Spent some time on 'the inside' when younger, been with South Fremantle last five years where he has mostly played at HBF. Inspired by Bryce Gibbs, asked to be 'released to the midfield' this year and has performed very well. Averaged 21.8 touches, 4.8 marks, 0.7 goals a game, including games of 36 touches, 7 tackles / 26 touches, 4 goals / 30 touches (21 contested), 9 clearances, 7 tackles, 5 I50s, 1 goal. Was mentioned earlier in year that GC is very interested, together with WC and Geelong. Article here

Mitch Grigg, Norwood, MID, 25yo, 182cm, 85kg

Probably the best performed mid at state level. Named in bests 15 times this year. Drafted by the Crows at pick 41 in 2011. Spent 5 years on the Crows list. Played 20 gaes across 3 seasons (did not play seniors first or last year on Crows' list). Spent all year in the SANFL last year, won the Magary Medal (SANFL B&F) and then went back-to-back this year. Also won the Oatey Medal (BOG in GF), first time has been awarded to player in losing team in SANFL history. He only had a lazy 31 touches, 5 marks, 4 tackles, 10 clearances, 6 I50s AND 6 goals. Not a typo. Article here. He kicked 35 goals for the year to finish 5th in the SANFL goalkicking (includes finals). 28 goals during H&A. From memory he is a very nice left foot kick and likes a goal. Why didn't he make it AFL level at the Crows? It seems he is a very very good footballer who lacks tricks. Perhaps an upgrade on Nick Graham or a poor-man's Jordan Lewis. Apparently an ankle injury early on in his Crows career cost him agility. Given he was not big, he wasn't an inside beast. He also wasn't quick and apparently was a 1-way runner. I have read on the Crows board (see you the sacrifices I make for you people?!?!) that Camporeale didn't like him (personal or professional?) but Walsh liked him and gave him games. With Walsh's passing, Grigg lost his backer at the Crows. Note, he is quite a bit heavier now than in his playing days.

Great thread ferris....an addition

Marlon Pickett

Here are the top 5 mature age selections (in terms of first 5 picked) from each of the last 5 drafts

Given we can trade the picks, I thought it was interesting to see where mature age talent generally gets picked. Obviously this changes based on the players each year, but as a rough guide the first state player has been selected at pick ~21, the 2nd at pick ~29 etc.

Gold Coast have been linked to Corbett for quite some time. Both Carlton and Gold Coast are linked to McAdam.

We've been linked to Collins for a little while now.

Have a feeling we'll get Collins and that the rumor on McAdam from earlier today is on the money and that'll be somewhat how we get McGovern.

If it's mini-draft style it'll go

1. McAdam (traded to Adelaide)
2. Corbett (GC)
3. Collins (Carlton)
4. *someone* (GC)

Can see it being mini-draft style in the week after the GF. It makes the most sense if the players can be traded, they should be tradeable. McAdam is the obvious pick if the rumour has some sort of truth to it. Corbett another if McGovern was not to eventuate, as you've mentioned ferris. See how it pans out I guess.

I have no faith in us using this draft properly. We will **** it up and select Collins I am sure.

I feel the opposite. I think the new regime (aka SOS) is very opportunistic and will be able to work out the best option between auctioning and/or drafting players.

I feel SOS is probably more of a junior talent guy but Michael Agresta reportedly has skills picking out mature age players and Paul Brodie has a reputation for picking out diamonds in the rough.

Indeed. Expecting SOS and Agresta to use these assets appropriately.

If we do get access to two players, that may be the equivalent of an end of first round AND end of second round priority pick, in terms of value.

Rarely do state-league players get selected much earlier than 20.

IF we do on-trade trade the rights, I'd guess we'd be looking at perhaps an early-mid 2nd rounder (~25) and possibly a mid-late 2nd rounder (~35). Highly dependent on what GC grabs.

Nothing game-changing, but it could provide a couple of decent enough picks to select some more kids or IMO more likely use as trade capital for AFL-listed mature-aged talent.

I was hoping Shane Rogers had his eye on somebody. :(

I know I harp on about Mitch Podhajski but as a 19 year old playing for Calder Cannons then I believe he must be available as he nominated for last years draft. Any other 19 year old TAC cup players? Knightmare had Podhakski top 25 not too long ago.

Is anyone sure how this works?

We can get access to 2 x Mature players PRIOR to the draft.

Do we get to pick them prior to the draft on the night or can we just sign them we pick who we want? Is it 2 years minimum contracts and can they be on a rookie list?

Under the arrangement, the Blues would be able to pre-list two players who have previously nominated or been eligible for the draft or were previously listed with an AFL club prior to this year’s draft.

They could do so with the intention of boosting their playing stocks or on-trading them to gain extra draft picks or experienced players from rival clubs.

http://www.goldcoastfc.com.au/news/2018-09-25/early-access-to-mature-talent

Earlier today the AFL confirmed the club would be provided an additional two category A rookie positions for the 2019 Toyota AFL Premiership Season, as well as the right to pre-list three (3) players who have previously nominated or been eligible for the Draft or were previously listed with an AFL club prior to the upcoming 2018 NAB AFL Draft.
So basically anyone who has nominated for the draft before this year is up for grabs.

Over age juniors, here we go!

Like to get McAdam and One of Nelson Grigg or Gibbons. I think any of these could step up and help us a lot.

We may also get Shiel Dunstan McGovern Fasolo Lonie K.Collins H.Goddard so we are really filling that 21-27 year old player that is ready for AFL football

What’s the depth like for overage juniors ?
Hamish Brayshaw drafted very late last year
https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/carltons-2018-draft-thread.1187246/page-298#post-58093824

If the requirements are simply that they've already been draft eligible for a year, then let's compare to the first 4 rounds of the 2015-2017 drafts (I won't go further as the pre-selection benefit is likely negligible at this point):

2015: Harrison Himmelberg, Alex Morgan, Mitch Hibberd, Marcus Adams, Oleg Markov, Mitch Brown, Sam Collins, Tom Phillips, Shane Yarran
2016: Tim English, Cedric Cox, Ben Long, Tom Stewart, Mitch Hannan, Darcy Cameron, Willie Rioli, Lachlan Tizani, Ryan Abbott
2017: Tim Kelly, Liam Ryan, Bailey Fritsch, Brayden Ainsworth, Ben Paton, Oskar Baker, Zac Langdon, Dom Barry, Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, Hamish Brayshaw

The bolded are players who I think exceed the current crop of eligible players, but I'm yet to really sit down and figure out who the 19 year olds are running around in the state leagues and U18s at present.

So GCS get way more than us?
Missed this the first time: they get 1 more pre-listing opportunity, but it would seem there'll be no drafting process for those, i.e. first come first served. I'm confident that SOS can outpoint them in terms of club signings and identifying the maximum trade value.

Aside from that it's a couple of extra rookie picks, presumably at the end. They may only use them to expand the number of academy kids they bring in.

Would much prefer Hugh Goddard as a DFA.

Interesting thing is timing. Can we sign them now? Need to what for trade week? Can we trade them up until draft night or only during trade period?
That kid from Coburg ( limpinski) had a very good year. Worth a look.
