Toast Maturity From Tex

Burton defends well. Stop inventing things to enhance your case.

You're confusing the 2005-2006 version of Burton with the 2010 model. He is no better defensively than what Walker is. Not to mention the constant falling over, dropping simple chest marks and missing easy shots at goal... all of which he was guilty of again tonight.

Absolutely spot on. As someone else said, his opposition walks around him like he's a witches hat.

Buron has kicked 3 goals over the past 4 weeks, simply not good enough from a senior key forward

not to mention that he applies no defensive pressure whats so ever

Walker and Burton have very similar stats for the season (across all games including SANFL).

If Burton should be dropped for his performances, then Walker shouldn't be picked for his.

Burton 12 posessions no goals, he applied no defensive pressure and has no power in his legs.

Walker for Norwood 16 possessions and kicked 3.3 and can kick over 40 metres.

Anyway back to your analysis, if their stats were similar, why drop Walker and not Burton? Burton wont be playing in 2011, Walker will. Its basic list development.

Burton has just completed an ordinary month of football, how long can you justify carrying him?

we might as well play Tex so we can get used to him going missing for a half, not chasing and missing set shots

I'm sure when he's in the side you'll judge him just as objectively as you have judged Burton

Might I add that Burton's 12 disposals came at 50% efficiency. Just pathetic.

There is a difference though, Walker is developing while Burton is 32 years of age and finished as a player. Unfortunately there are some people that are so fearful to accept change that they would rather see Burton out there offering nothing rather than accept the reality that Burton is now a liability who now cant kick more than 35 metres.

And when he is 35m out, he can't put it through the big sticks...

The above describes Burton at the moment actually. Why are you not calling for him to be removed from the team?

Out of curiosity, do you believe Marty Mattner is a "weak character"? Much like Walker, he seemed to enjoy being at the Crows, but like Walker was played out of position and his form suffered markedly to the point where he was in and out of the team. When the Swans offered him a better contract and the opportunity of a regular first team spot, who could blame him for jumping at the opportunity? I dont think people are suggesting Tex is going to walk out on the club, but if another club gets in his ear "Hey Taylor, we think you're an incredible talent, we want to sign you up to an increased contract, play you in your natural position and give you the chance to make the full-forward spot your own", I dont think he would be "weak" to accept that opportunity.

Personally, if I felt I wasn't getting the opportunities I deserved in my job, and I was getting overlooked for others who weren't performing any better than me, I'd be listening very carefully to other offers that came my way. I'm not suggesting Tex would think the same way, but I certainly wouldn't hold it against him if he did.

I don't think Mattner is a weak character, no. Different situation though. Being played out of position and clearly having his game hampered by it is different from being dropped, and Mattner had already proven himself at AFL level for a long period of time before the problems arose.

Walker being played across CHB is one issue which I'm not touching here, but in terms of his demotion to the SANFL, he's a young player still learning his trade. If he got the hump up simply because it wasn't being given straight to him, I would think of that as a sign of weak character.

Obviously there is a point at which, in my opinion, it becomes completely fair for Walker to start feeling like he's being deprived of opportunities he has earned, and at that stage I wouldn't begrudge him looking elsewhere at all. If he doesn't get given a shot for the rest of this year, I'd fully expect him to do so, but a few weeks in the SANFL during his second playing year? He should put his head down and prove that he deserves to be back in the best 22, not go off and look for someone else who will accept his deficiencies without complaining. Sounds to me like he's doing exactly that, which is a great reflection on his character.

If this shit is still happening in a couple years time, I wouldn't blame him for taking off, just like I didn't blame Mattner for leaving.

Don't get me started on Hudson though.

I was just talking to a person I work with who is actually in a close circle of freinds with Tex. She doesnt follow footy that close but when some of us were talking about this round and about dropping Burton for Walker my co worker pipes up out of the blue with "I'll be surprised if he is there next year. Craigy hates him and Tex hates Craigy".

Really hope she is wrong!

I hope she is wrong too and if it has reached that stage unfortunately there are plenty of clubs that want him and have coaches who are intelligent enough to use him to his full potential rather than just invent excuses to keep him out of the side.

If Walker leaves at the end of the year the blame will lay square at the feet of Neil Craig.

If he were to come back and play in his actual position, then maybe, I would. I would however, cut him some slack given he's a young developing player with huge potential. This is something that can't be afforded to an underpeforming, injury prone 32 year old, who has proved consistantly over a 12 year career, that he can't kick to save himself and regularly makes horrible decisions with and off the ball.

But no, I can see how at this point of our worst season ever, we should be concentrating on keeping the veteran around, instead of developing a young player, who actually has natural talent coming out of his arse.
