Maxi baby thanks!!

This is great. Hava good preseason, bulk up, put injuries behind, and let ruff run amok at ff!!!

Hale to rotate

:)

great news and a quality bloke. we need him as number one ruck, was so unlucky this year and was only out due to circumstance, it wasn't broke so we didn't fix it. Oh how we could have used some contested marking options in the GF...

Let's move on from the Roughy ruck experiment, the guy is a Key Position, front or back who cares but use him where he can have impact.

Ruff's played some exceptional footy in the ruck, great at clearances, extra midfielder and all that. Can see him becoming all australian as a ruck/forward.

If we continue to use him there why keep Bailey?? he needs to get back to realising he is a brute and can crash packs and create carnage. Pinch hit in the ruck by all means but not as the norm.

Lowden is not AFL ready yet. Having another good preseason under his belt will help and honestly i think we will be playing all three of Hale, Bailey and Roughead a lot next year barring injury. That will leave Lowden a genuine chance of playing some senior footy.

I also rate McCauley, someone said he was soft in this thread but i have no idea where he got that opinion from because from what I have seen of him this year he plays similar to Robbie Campbell by being agressive at ground level contests.

I was being sarcastic, Lowden is the future, Max is a one trick pony. Part of our problem with list management and us tiring as seasons go in is blokes like Lowden don't get enough games into them. Lowden and McCauley have more upside than Max, but their story isn't as sexy as Max so we go with the fairytale.

Sorry Dermott, you clearly have not been watching Box Hill. Lowden is ready and needs opportunity.

Well SU I try to get to 4 or 5 Box Hill games every year and watch the televised games as I am interested in the developing players including Lowden. You undoubtedly disagree with me but on the basis of what I have seen in 2012 he was not ready for AFL footy.
Like you I hope he gets his chances in 2013 and takes the next step.

with a bit of luck will be taking the centre bounces again in 2013.

Don't you mean "a whole lotta luck"? Look, I've been as patient as the next guy waiting for Max to find his feet at League level, but he just isn't cutting it. We need him fit and on the field, and if he's not going to live up to his part of the deal, then maybe a tougher decision than another 12 months contract will need to be made.

It is nice that Max signs up again, I would rather Giles, Griffin or Clarke. If Max is to continue on the list he has to do more on those occasions where he gets on the park. He is a nice tap ruck but his influence past that is negligible.

As for Lowden, how many rucks are much chop before 22/23? He may come good but the only lesson is dont recruit 17 year old ruckmen.

Just on afl trade radio Max Bailey has signed on again, always Hawthorn
Bloody fantastic. Fit, he is one great ruckman.
I hope he stays well and healthy because if he does he will prove to be one of the best ruckmen of all.
I mean that , he has got the nature and the push to prove to the football public what a great get he was.
I,ve watched him play and I saw him trying to get healthy at Waverly when visiting the club there , quite a while ago (during one knee episode), but his determination is a Hawthorn trait. He can get down and dirty and run and win the contest.
Without injuries hampering this fellow, he will be one of the football greats. Mark me!

Your wrong about Max Friar, he has something special and a few years waiting to get fit is hard on any carreer , but Max is not just anything, he is special. As I said watch and hope for injury free time for our big bloke.

Thought I would find you lurking in this thread...

You should have been at Sydney game at Aurora. Personally after that I was not overly disappointed not to see him named again.

I'd love to see Bailey become our number one ruckman next year, but time's running out for him to have an injury-free season. It's true he's had little impact around the ground in the past but he's still very inexperienced in terms of games played and has obviously had more injury issues than....... wait for it... Xavier Ellis! (not many blokes you could say that bout either)

All the same, the club must see something in him to have persisted for as long as they have. It'd be terrific if Max could payback some of that faith shown in him next year.

Well i think Baileys signing is a bless, he has shown alot in his games, an has alot of potential to develop further! I think we need him and i like the way he blocks and bumps opp tagers, protecting our mid field.

Roughie being away from goal for large periods seems to hurt his goal form, i think for us to win a premiership in 2013 we need roughie in the forward line 80% of time.

I think we have a nice balance in ruck now and healthy comeptition.... For me if anyone is fighting for there spot it's grimely. Either way i dont see any big voluntery change on our list by the HAWKS. Were in a healthly position, keep eyes on the premierpship win for 2013 ;) Go hawks!

And a big amen to that.
We need Roughy kicking goals, end of story!!

Max is still a bit of an unknown entity in the AFL. Not talking potential here, but what he has shown...and up to this point it's not a lot. I don't think anyone could say he is a great ruckman, or even a great tap ruckman. Has never had continuity...which makes it seriously hard to know for sure how good he is or to make an assumption on what he could be.
Personally i think he can be a good ruckman, not a gun player, but a good ruckman... if he is injury free. It's a big if, considering his past injury status.

As i have seen it so far, he needs heaps of work in a number of areas

What he said.:thumbsu:

This thread is about Max Bailey.
We took a right hand turn about 30 posts back and ended up in a town called Lowden instead of Bailey.
Now we're back on track.
By the way, refrain from the personal insults too.

How do we see the introduction of the new 'no wrestling for rucks' rule affecting Big Max?

Personally, I can see it being of great benefit to him.
At 206cm, there are not going to be too many opposing ruckmen that are taller than him. With less bodywork being applied to him, particularly around stoppages, I can see him getting a few more hitouts which will hopefully give our midfielders first use of the ball.

its great for Max but the flip side is not so good for Ruffy ....two rucks may come back in vogue for us now and Ruff stays at home ...

I'm not so certain. I think Agile leaping rucks will do better now as the bigger guys can't use their size and strength to out position opponents. Nic Nat is the prototype. Roughy does his best work in the centre so it may actually suit him. Personally, I think Roughy should stop rucking and just play as a ruck rover.
