Curious, if the next year of his contract would be the third year on the rookie list then he is actually a free agent to a club looking to offer him a primary list spot.

If St Kilda are offering a move to the primary list then he is not a free agent.
I could be wrong but I thought to be able to pick a player in the mid season draft were he was picked you actually need to have a primary list spot available so he would already be on the primary list . If he wanted to go to another club they would have to trade for him

Contract is held on the rookie list not the primary list. The whole primary list spot available due to injury is just a weird rule in reality.

The reality for Eagles now is with Tom McCarthy joining we now have 7 people on our rookie list. In the off season we need to cut 1 player off the list to make it 6 before the season begins as McCarthys 18 month deal is on the rookie list

He is a rookie listed player, the same as the supplemental selection players taken before the season began to fill vacant list spots. All mid season picks are on the rookie list. Very similar to the old long term injury list where a player was added for minimum eight weeks to allow a rookie to play AFL.

Mid season draftee deals were being discussed between the AFL and AFLPA as that half a year on the rookie list (no preseason) probably shouldn't count as a year on the rookie list for things like 3 year max terms on the rookie list and the quirk of a rule that if a player has played two seasons on the rookie list and is offered a third year they are eligible to move as a free agent to a club that offers them a primary list position.

The wording of the rule doesn't appear to specify if the extension beyond the single year, in which the first year is remaining on the rookie list, disqualifies the player to move as a free agent - even if the three year extension has the last two years on the primary list.

The player may still qualify as a free agent to move as the third year on the rookie list offer triggers that availability to the player.

Could get very interesting. There has been one attempt for a player to move this way, Lachie Young at the bulldogs sought to move as a free agent to North Melbourne but the Dogs eventually offered him a primary list spot to force the trade for pick #63.

So we can automatically put him on the primary list or he has to agree? Hopefully we can get it sorted if he continues playing like currently you imagine there would be a lot of interest in him especially if his a free agent

If St Kilda offer him a contract on the primary list, he is not a free agent if he decides to turn it down and move. If St Kilda offer him a third year on the rookie list, he can turn it down and be a free agent.

Was instrumental in our final quarter comeback after being moved onto the ball, and finished the game with a game-high 13 score involvements, and a huge 5 goal assists. The most anyone’s had for us since 2017.

He’d be mighty glad he didn’t sign a new contract a couple of months ago!
7 disposals for 6 score involvement in that last quarter.

Been an incredible find. Need to get him signed up before another club gets any ideas and offers him a truckload.

Reminds me so much of Dylan Moore with how he goes about it.

A natural footballer.
