Toast Max Holmes

After the clark and constable toast threads im not going too early but i love this kids workrate. He makes blues but he just never stops working..and that i really rate.
His late involvements were vitally important, for sure. Like you, though, what really stood out for me was that even when his first attempt to get involved didn't quite result in us winning it cleanly, he was back in there competing again for the ball right away. Actually won some balls with his second and third efforts, which is a brilliant quality to have in a young player.

I seriously wonder what posters here can see that is not to like about this kid. He finds the football, takes clean possession, can beat players with pace, and runs both ways all day. Has started making better decisions when he has the footy and his goal-kicking has sharpened up massively already this year (off a very low base, mind you). Playing (and making a massive contribution when it mattered) in a big game like that one will do him the world of good as well.

Moving up for him in the draft now looks extremely astute to me. Given our paucity of high-quality mids coming through, jagging Max with pick 20 looks like fantastic business at this point.

IWWT.

The knock on the kicking of the bloke who next put it on the boot in this passage is generally enormous here as well.

Shit kick to shit kick and the result = goal

He has lifted from last year. As you would expect. Would like him to run and carry a bit more with ball in hand as he has the pace but rarely uses it offensively. Had a terrible first qtr but was brilliant in the last.

I actually agree with your post, I also would like to see a bit more run and carry from him (he has great pace and usually a great kick so could use that more), no doubt that will come in time though.
I also agree, he was poor early in the game but his last quarter was brilliant. You get those kind of performances in the first half from a lot of young players, where absolutely nothing goes right for you, a HUGE positive for me is the ability to still have a huge impact on the result late in the game, it shows a determination and mental strength that isn't trainable.
He has some of those intangibles.

Do people see Max as a future mid?

I see him as an Isaac Smith replacement - he actually reminds me of a young Smith a lot.

It's a good call. I think the really exciting thing with Holmes is that I wouldn't rule him out blossoming into a really good inside player as well. Has all the tools, I think, and just needs to fill out and build experience.

You really do just shake your head when you consider we took players like Lang, Smedts, Fogarty either earlier or around the same pick as Max in recent drafts. Already easily looks a better player than all three.

I think he’s more inside than Smith. I think he’s got what my dad’s generation call “a bit of mongrel”. :D

Was great in the last quarter and a half. Is our most promising player from the kids. But I have to admit, half way through the third quarter I was calling for him to be dropped based on his first half this week and his stinker last week.

My key take out from last night was how good de Koenig was. He could be a game changer for this team.

I think some had a bit of a knock on his kicking? Lol.

There was one in the preseason game where he kicked to Dangerfield in the goalsquare, got it over all the defenders - wasn't expecting him to have developed that much penetration in his kicks already.

With his hair a bit longer he reminded me of a former no. 9 of ours, now one of our assistant coaches.

A bit taller and a bit quicker, but he's becoming just as hard. And if he can be as good, I won't have any complaints. Might even be better.

This isn't meant as a criticism of Nick Daicos who's a serious talent but if he'd dragged his team over the line with a huge last quarter like Holmes did we'd never hear the end of it. Holmes is 5 months older, probably played less competitive footy despite a few more AFL games and is every bit as talented yet he's barely been mentioned in the wash up. Thankfully we don't have the Collingwood issue of our kids being forever talked up and getting big heads.

What? Daicos is averaging 25 touches a game in his 1st season while Holmes is averaging 16 touches a game in his 2nd season

Fogarty yes, but the other two were around decade ago

I think you meant to target the Collingwood fan base with this target than Daicos who seems to be an unbelievable talent

And Holmes' 20 touch game last night was miles more influential than Daicos' 26 possession game. There are more important things in this game than just disposals especially when one is playing much more time in midfield than the other.

Max was immense in that last quarter- the speed but also the physical pressure he brings impacted nearly every key contest he was in. His vision and quick reflex long handballs are a weapon.
I was most blown away by that 40 metre precision pass to Blitz. Wow! Was that through off-season coaching and practise or was it always there but hidden by first year nerves?! Either way - if he can do that once running at speed and under some pressure he’s capable of doing it again. Loved the earlier assured kick for a goal.
