Only ever saw highlights and read what past players have to say and they all rated him highly.
I think he tends be forgotten because he played for a team that had very little success. Many of his finest performances were never broadcast (often billed for the bigger clubs at the time).
If you check out his stats, nearly 20 disposals & 5 marks per game as a winger in that era is ridiculously good.
Back in the day 'interstate games' Vic vs WA and Vic vs SA were the real highlight games of the calendar with some of the very best players from around the country playing and Robbie Flower was nearly always BOG or near to it in those games, that's how good a player he was, one of the very best and a champion and for many years was my favourite non Geelong player.

Some of those marks are incredible. I know he was light but he obviously had brilliant hops. I recall having a chat to Neville Bruns a few years ago and Flower was one of those players he spoke about when it came to aerial craftsmanship (Ablett notably mentioned).
This is why he'd make a top line player in today's game. 6ft'1 and could run all day like Lachie Whitfield.

You would think his game would be perfectly suited to today.
Likewise Robert Flower.
Loved Robbie. What a player
They were both exceptionally skilled, quick, beautiful marks, and could kick both feet. I think they both used left hand to bounce. And virtually same height and weight, 183cm, 75kg, Turner being 9months older

If he puts in the body of work James Kelly did he will go past both he and Turner by some way as our bestest #9. I can see a Holmes-Humphries taking over Dangerfield-Stewart in the captaincy stakes.

I clearly remember his draft and the WTF is Wells doing from people that wanted to not trade the future Rd1 to Richmond...

Well has that aged well.

Top 5 Mid in the game...

Theres a IWW thread looking to collect..

GO Catters

I remember the draft thread early this year, where Holmes was talked about as part of a deal to get Reid. I don't think so. We need to add to the Dash Bros. Not split them up.

It is almost like the people that talk in absolutes in draft threads like they know absolutely everything.... do not in fact know absolutely everything :tearsofjoy:

Some people wanted to offer up Holmes plus a first rounder just so we could pay Reid twice the salary that Holmes is signed up for. And that was after he'd run away with our B&F!

We're a weird fan base. Most fans massively overrate their own players. Yet we talk about opposition players like they're stars while taking down our own guns.

“There are (Chris) Judd-like traits” - Paddy Dangerfield

How fitting the 'great one', prophet, clairvoyant and player extraordinaire in Paddy Dangerfield plays against the Brisbane Lions on Friday-night his 350th milestone game and in doing so, he'll be sharing and playing on the field with 22yo on-ball Geelong young sensation and team-mate in Max Holmes.

As it was Paddy that predicted when Max was only 20 years of age that he could be the best player in the competition "HE TRULY COULD BE" with Max in Friday-nights game also coming off probably his best 2 AFL games against the' Gold Coast Suns' in which he had 40 disposals and the 'Essendon Bombers' 36 disposals with BOG's in both games. Long live the messiah and his young disciple.... and GO CATS !!!

From SEN 19/12/22

“There are (Chris) Judd-like traits,” Dangerfield said in the book.
“He has phenomenal endurance but also electric speed – it’s a rare combination."
“He hadn’t played all that much footy during his junior days and I think he’s just starting to find out how good he can be."
“We haven’t played him that much as an inside mid yet, but he can be a good stoppage player as well."
“I believe he could be the best player in the competition at some stage.... he truly could be.”

While the comments may surprise many, Kane Cornes believes we should at least sit up and take notice whenever Geelong internally rates a player. “My initial reaction was to fall off my chair, but I remember hearing Geelong people speak about Sam De Koning before De Koning broke out,” Cornes told SEN’s Sportsday. “So I think you need to put some weight on what they’re saying. “I don’t know if he’s going to be the best player in the competition, but still.”

One thing I notice that he's doing a lot better this year is steadying himself before he kicks.

First few years I think he would try to kick while running full pace and would lose some accuracy with it.

Now, with a bit more experience, now he really knows how to use his running prowess and complete the play.
He also has absolute confidence in his speed now, the game has slowed down for him so to speak, and he knows that basically no one else can run with him.. so he has the confidence to give that burst and then settle knowing he will be in the clear

26.49 - Max Holmes is a superstar

  • His game against Essendon was the highest rated game of the year by any individual
  • His PF finals against Lions 2022 he was rated number 1 player on the ground before going off
  • Against Port in the QF last year he was rated as the number 2 player on the ground
  • Last year again vs Lions in the PF he was rated as the number 1 player on the ground before going off

I liked this quote too

"From a contest perspective so Dangerfield has that explosion but the contest stuff is more brutality it's

just get in bash your way through no one's going to hold you back and then you explode.

The Judd and Holmes model is win the contest cleanly and then I take one step and away you go see you

later yeah you're not you're not catching me"

So basically holmes is danger like given danger had both those attributes
Hoyne messed up the explanation a bit. Dangerfield has always had great acceleration too, but the way Holmes spreads from congestion - without a wrecking ball moment - is a bit more like Judd 2003-2006 era at West Coast. Watch some old footage of him in that Eagles side. Then watch some Dangerfield 2016-2017 stuff. Holmes at the moment reminds me more of the former.

Have to admit I thought Holmes and Smith would be good, but had reservations about their inside grunt but they are serious beasts in the clinches in addition to the outside run they provide.
Hopefully they can keep it up until the pointy end.
Shout out also to Atkins who has taken his game to a new level.
Exciting times..

tbh the Essendon game is about the perfect sort of game I want to see from PFD. Pop up a couple times a quarter, affect the contest, get a shot or two, and an assist or two. And if needed does a few center bounces when really required to. He should not be the featured artist anymore.

I admit it - I'm not the greatest 'neutral' fan in that I don't know that much about players who do not play for Geelong. I never really had much of a clue about The Great Bazelenko before he joined us.

But I am seriously impressed. I'm even coming to understand why the leg-rooters are so pissed off at him and at us that they don't have him anymore. He is GOOD.
