Max King has been sent for scans on his leg
BOOM St Kilda youngster Max King appears to have escaped another long-term injury after initial scans on his leg failed to reveal any serious damage.
King landed awkwardly in a marking contest with former North Melbourne defender Daniel Nielson during the opening quarter of Sandringham's VFL clash against Werribee at Trevor Barker Oval on Sunday afternoon and went straight to the rooms to be assessed.

King was immediately sent for scans on the troublesome area and the initial prognosis is positive for the talented 18-year-old.
Saints football manager Simon Lethlean said King was unlikely to play next week but had avoided a more serious injury.
"The scan has shown no disruption to the graft so it looks like a positive story, hopefully," Lethlean told reporters.
"Obviously we were concerned based on his history, so it looks like, in my terminology, more of a jarred knee.
"There has been no disruption to the previous graft so it's pretty positive."

Emerging key forward Max King will undergo surgery on his right ankle tomorrow, which is likely to rule him out for the remainder of the season.
Scans earlier this week confirmed a syndesmosis injury to his right ankle.
General Manager of Football Simon Lethlean said surgery was the best option.
“There is the possibility that Max could rehab the injury without surgery, but after weighing up the options, we have opted for surgery,” he said.
“Max will start a rehab program next week, but it does appear unlikely that he will return in time to play again this year.
“It’s disappointing given Max was pushing for senior selection, but the focus will now be on working on his strength in the gym and being ready for day one of pre-season."

Max King is yet to play a senior game, but he already has the St Kilda faithful buzzing.
The gifted forward was taken at pick No. 4 in last year’s National Draft despite rupturing his ACL six months prior, with the Saints showing enormous faith in his potential.
King was on the cusp of a senior debut this season, before a high-ankle syndesmosis injury sustained in his fifth game for Sandringham cut the dream short.
Armed with an accurate right boot and impressive hands overhead, the now injury-free King is ready to assume the throne up forward.

This time last year…

…Max King was almost six months into his knee rehabilitation program and was thinking his chances of being taken early in the draft were a long shot.
The Haileybury College product tore his ACL in late April and also had the stresses of Year 12 to contend with during his draft year.
King underwent his rehabilitation program at RSEA Park during this time.
Then…
…King’s fears were swiftly allayed as he was snapped up by the Saints with pick No. 4 and recorded an extraordinary ATAR score of 97.8.
After joining the red, white and black, the then-18-year-old was handed the revered No. 12 by his childhood idol, Nick Riewoldt – a symbolic handover of the highest order.

The lifelong Saints fan was impressive in the VFL with 11 goals from five matches, and was on the cusp of senior selection before an ankle injury ruled him out for the season.
Now…
…the forward powerhouse has fully recovered and is expected to undergo a full pre-season in 2020.
The throne up forward lies in waiting.

AFL site has an article on 2020 break out contenders. Good to see at least one journo knows their business.

Max is going well in getting his body prepared for the season , they are being conservative with
him playing deep forward , having a guy like Roughead is huge for his development.
Long game being played there , playing against Nathan Brown a lot in match simulation which is good
for learning positioning etc.

Thanks Stewart66 For the training updates. I can't wait to see him live, not so much for the output goal wise- just to watch how he moves. 👍👍

Can someone pls post the Hun article here where Roughy talks about the greatest forward ever to play the game?

Cheers

St Kilda young gun Max King set for lead role in revamped forward line
Jarryd Roughead has move to temper the excitement about likely Round 1 debutant Max King, but says the 19-year-old has shown plenty of promise as he prepares to lead St Kilda’s attack.

Teenager Max King will lead St Kilda’s forward line this year as the club tempers excitement about his sky-high potential.
The No. 4 pick from the 2018 draft, King is set to replace Josh Bruce as the primary target in attack for the revamped Saints.

The 19-year-old, who played five VFL games last year after recovering from a knee reconstruction, will likely partner Paddy Ryder and Tim Membrey in a three-pronged tall forward set-up.

Champion forward Jarryd Roughead said he had been impressed by King since joining St Kilda’s football department.

But he downplayed the excitement surrounding the 202cm prospect and conceded King was unlikely to play every game as he is managed through his first AFL campaign.

“He’s a 19-year-old key forward and there’s going to be some high expectations on him,” Roughead said.

“But we’ve got to actually remember he’s only really played four or five VFL games last year coming off a knee reconstruction.

“He’s been training as the No. 1 key forward and he’s doing some good things.

“But we also know it’s a long year and can’t expect that this kid is going to be a 70-80 goal forward just yet.

“We’ve got to be patient and understand that key forwards do take a little bit of time. But from what I have seen already in the three months I have been there, it’s pretty promising.”

King will be among a host of new faces in Brett Ratten’s Round 1 side after the Saints picked up Brad Hill, Dougal Howard, Dan Butler, Zak Jones and Ryder in last year’s trade period.

Roughead said he was excited to see how endurance machine Hill, his former premiership teammate, relished playing regularly under the Marvel Stadium roof.

“He’s definitely one that’s matured. How he trains, how he runs, it’s pretty impressive still,” Roughead said.

“Seven out of our first eight games are under the roof at Etihad, so we’re not going to slow him down with a wet ground or anything like that.

“It will be very interesting to see how he goes.”

Roughead told SEN ex-Port Adelaide swingman Howard would start in defence but was likely to pinch-hit in attack.
