I have never been so excited about a recruit. This guy is confident, intelligent, articulate, dedicated & most importantly a eite talented footballer!

Marquee player, franchise player, face of the club & he will sell memberships. The next Roo! Will be captain.

He won’t be worried about taking jumper 12, he will demand it! You can just see he is extremely confident in his own skin. This guy is a 1/1,000,000.

So excited. Go Max. Go Saints.
If Paddy got offered #12 he would be shivering in the corner in fear

No need to rush big Maxxy, he’s not going to play until the back end of the year coming off his knee and he’s just turned 18, he’s a long term investment.

He is one of the the best talents I’ve seen come through the draft, and that was last year as a 16 year old.

At 204.7 cm, anyone who thinks this is a bad pick is a lunatic who genuinely is either a troll or just plain ignorant.

#givemaxnumber12
If paddy wasnt a flop we may have had a different result.

I did the stats somewhere, there is a higher percentage of talls who totally wash out of the first round of draft picks than mids. A lot more.

Biggest goalkickers last season.
J Riewoldt: Pick 13 , i wanted him at 9. 4th season was good. Ordinary or busts: Gumbleton, Hanson, Thorpe, Hanson, Reid. J Selwood taken after them all.
Ben Brown: Would have gone first round but did his ACL late in his draft year. All recruiters too stupid to rookie him the year before north drafted him.
Tom Hawkins : Father Son. Kicked some early bags, but took him 6 years to have any consistency.
Lance Franklin: Pick 5 in the same draft Roughead was number 2. Richmond took two midfielders. Went pretty damn good on his 3rd season.
Tom McDonald: taken very late in the 2010 draft. Sam Day taken pick 3 that year. Mostly played back but recently moved fwd.
Jack Gunston : Pick 29. Early picks were Gary Rohan. John Butcher and Daniel Talia. Gradually got better his 3rd and 4th seasons were pretty good.
Jack Darling : Same draft as Tom McDonald , late first rounder.
Jesse Hogan: Early pick ( equivalent ). Pretty much effective straight away.

There are also a lot of early picked midfielders who turn out to be......OK.
I think most of the very top end mids were taken a bit later.

I was initially hesitant on picking a tall forward given the number of under achieving early draft pick talls in recent years and our midfield woes. But the more I watched the highlights of the top 8 or so the clearer it was that Max was a standout particularly given all his highlights came from only 1 or 2 games. Most importantly he has the agility, speed and recovery that Paddy, Boyd and Paton all lack and that the good ones all have. He kicks goals from lead up marks from goal square pack marks, from chase down tackles and from winning his own crumb and snapping like Steven Milne.

At a minimum early on he will make defenses nervous just by the height mismatch he will have and create opportunities for the other forwards as they try and double team him to stop his leap at the ball. He will be a match-up nightmare for most teams. Except Gold Coast of course who will have the perfect backman to play on him for the next couple of years at least.

As for how we fit all our tall forwards in the one side clearly we don't. But apart from Membury none of them are locks in our best side now. They all have this year to claim their spot while Max recovers from the knee and does his apprenticeship in the VFL. If Paddy is good enough he will demand a spot, if he fails again we have other options.

Finally the pure joy on his face when his dream came true was enough to ease most of the pain of the last 12 months.

You reckon? I wouldn't say that.

I do.

Weitering has absolutely zero confidence & hasn’t played a decent game since his debut season (when he looked like a 250 game gun).

Getting a 204cm KPF who grabs the ball at the highest point is a great result. Joe Daniher can look unstoppable at times due to his size and athleticism and Max is 4cm taller, just let that sink in for a second.

It will take him a few years to get used to the rigours of AFL/AFL defenders, but once he fills out and learns how to draw free kicks (all the best KPFs do this) then he will be unstoppable.

Jacob Weitering is struggling as much as Paddy yet has none of the horrible bad luck with injuries.

Mmm yeah winning the rising star in his first year in the worst team and being moved to every position on the field since then. Definitely of the same caliber of struggling, good one.

Well I’m disappointed to have not taken a midfielder as we’re in desperate need of pace and foot skills. I’m also worried about his knee and the higher chance of injuring it again. Picking tall forwards is a very difficult game and I hope we develop him into a modern tall forward capable of taking pack marks, kicking bags of goals but also one that moves into plenty of areas around the ground a la Riewoldt.

I think he will bring the right attitude and be the consummate professional. His love for the club will probably push him a little bit further than those who play for any team other than their own.

How he fits in with the other tall forwards will become a lot clearer in a few years. I suspect we’ll see a few trades and the spot will be there for him. It’s hard to predict what our forward line will actually look like but those that take their chances will be in there.

Good luck Max. If you’re half the player Roo was then we’ll be fine.

I think the forward line we should end up with in a few years will be

HF: Gresham, Battle, Billings
F: Long, King, Membrey

I think that we'll probably have to trade or cut 2 of the 6 tall forwards currently on the list. King probably won't play much next year but he'll be playing alongside 2 of Bruce, McCartin, Battle and Marshall at Sandy and I don't think those guys would be too keen on playing much VFL footy in the coming years.

Bruce is proven AFL quality, Battle is a natural footballer with a good tank and plenty of aggression and Marshall is a raw, athletic giant with a lot of development left in him. At this stage Paddy is a plodder who can clunk a mark and has a tough road ahead. King's arrival probably means Marshall won't have a spot unless he can become a ruckman

There are so many other threads to discuss Paddy in. Let's celebrate Max in this one.

It took me some time to come around to. But I'm genuinely excited to have picked Max up now. He has genuinely elite potential and his excitement is contagious.

Looking forward to your journey with us Maxy!

Lets get back to celebrating Max

It's going to be fun watching Max play because I know we're both big fans of the team. Awesome.

Everyone wants to talk about stats and shit like that but fairy-tale stuff like this once in a while is just awesome.
