Meh, the only young KPF in the game right now who is overrated is Naughton, everyone, esp King are doing the job what their clubs are paying them for.

because statistcally it is in the above average bracket? only 26 players in the league average 2 goals a game this season, and only 19 when filtered as "Key Forward" on AFL.com including 3 players who have played have 3 games or less. So 16 players, which is less than 1 player per team on average.

Careers are a bit different but he is ahead of other young forwards like Naughton (1.7 when adjusted for his 1 season), Curnow (1.6), Larkey (1.7) and is just behind McKay (2.0). Not to say he is better than these guys but it just shows that young key forwards are seem to rarely average 2 goals a game early in their career. To use it as a knock against him is yet not others seems odd

How many key forwards are there in the comp that are best 22? About 2 each team (36 total). So if 19 of them get 2+ goals a game it makes King look pretty average doesn’t it as he is in the bottom half.

Thanks for addressing one single point, like I said (or meant to say, can't remember tbh), comparing career to this season is redundant anyway. He is averaging 2.9 this season, well above his career average and if he carries that average throughout the season he will have about 64 goals (presuming he plays all games) which means he will hit your precious 2 goals average anyway.

If he doesn't do it, oh well. Like I pointed out before, he is at least on par for every other great young key forward in the league and I look forward to seeing all them in the future.

You don’t seem to understand FrogDude. As a Tiger supporter it is bloody hard to get your head around the prospect of a St Kilda player being any good. I mean if you count up all the flags won by individual St Kilda player in 126 years, it is only 20. Marlion Pickett started playing in August 2019 and 14 months later had 3 flags himself, and a Normy Goss Medal into the bargain. So it is kinda hard to take St Kilda players seriously.

I will have to see if I can find any more loopholes in “Max,” it is unacceptable to me that he can be viewed as having “arrived” without even making a Preliminary Final.

What’s his ground ball gets stats this season?

How’s Maxy “has arrived” King tracking these days? Haven’t seemed to notice him much for a while. Down to 9th for goals per game. 4th for contested marks per game. But ranks first for behinds per game. Last I checked you get 1 point for those. Layed a tackle tonight, his first in his last 7 games. 😱.

4 goal assists for the semester. Last 9 games included his day out against he undermanned Crows defence, but apart from that “Max” as he is known to the Saints fans I know, has been tracking a little bit short of elite, from what I can make out. 6 of his last 9 games single figure disposals, highest 11.

Did you go a little early PJays, or is “Max” just having a bad half a season? 😁.

Gun player and future hall of famer.

I don't know why people have to bump this thread every time he has a quiet 9 games. No key forward consistently kicks bag's anymore. It's not 1990.

Max is in the frame for AA selection which is an incredible achievement for a 4th year KPF (who missed his first year).

There you go, fixed that for you. 😁

35 goals and 32 contested marks after 13 games, 3rd and 2nd in the AFL

Absolutely elite for a 21 year old with 50 games.

He's younger than anyone else in top 20 of either category, except Sam de Koning who's 9th in contested marks, Mitch Georgiades (20th) and Jack Ginnavan (20th, goals)

I can't remember any St Kilda player not named Nick Riewoldt who's had comparable impact at this age. (Lockett's 1987 season was before my time!)

Edit: Actually, Luke Ball made an All Australian team in 2005 at 21 and won the B&F, but I don't remember him winning multiple games off his own boot like King has this year. Maybe he did. But I'll take a marking power forward over a mid any day.

King made some of the recent mid season All Australian teams too. Others put Lynch and Curnow ahead. He's in the running

Well, he is having a pretty decent year is “Max” but he is 9th for average goals per game, so sliding down out of the elite category, and it probably looks a bit worse that that on the more indicative goals + goal assists ladder. For example former pick 76 Mitchell Lewis playing in a bottom 6 team seems to be ahead of your golden boy for goals per game, and gets more tackles, more score involvements and more 1%ers, you know, the team things. 😱 The Saint is 4th on the contested grabs per game table and seems to be on the slide there. Still good going, but he does play a higher portion of his games indoors than others so this is always going to boost him a bit, but I am happy with his contested marking overall.

But what about Max’s run of 7 games without a tackle PJays? 😱.

So I am scratching my cranium wondering why you chose Max “has arrived” King to start a thread about, when he is delivering what everyone would rightly expect from such a lofty draft pick. Why not start a thread on the much more eye-catching pick 76 Mitch Lewis making the grade? I would hate to think that is caused by bias towards your own team’s player PJays, I thought you were better than that. 😁

Seems a nice player. Kicked a goal from a touched ball called a mark last night. That blind turn was special but he doesn’t dominate for me like a 21yo Carey/Lloyd/Franklin/Cameron did.

Also thought the first 50 games contested marks thing that C7 kept flashing up was a bit disingenuous given they’ve only kept that stat for the past 20 or so years.

Was schooled by a quality player in Ridley. And even Laverde did time on him and I thought held “the next big thing” well in check. Laverde. 😱

Imo Max will finish his career similarly to how people see Tex Walkers. Solid 500-600 goal career but never achieve finals success and thus be seen as the next tier below Jack Riewoldt and Hawkins etc. I’m not trolling that seems pretty fair I think.

Your post does come across as a bit trollish imo, King already is a much better player than Jack Riewoldt at the same age.

Maybe but his team will unfortunately affect how good he can be. I have no faith in St Kilda at all.

Jack kicked 78 in his 4th season and won the Coleman all before his 22nd birthday. I don’t see Max doing that this year.

Max king is a gun but he needs help. They seem overly reliant on him as a marking target. They have managed to get by with Menbrey (who’s a more ideal 3rd forward) and resting ryder or Marshall up there.

Hopefully we bring Sharman back to give us another marking option and take some of the heat off King, we are too predictable going to King so much.

He's a great young key forward but he can't beat 3 or 4 defenders.

Do you guys think he’s too weedy to be good? I know he’s like 21 but still he’s very thin. Players like Hawkins and Lockett who are stocky tend to better full forwards as they can contest the ball better. Naughton and curnow are also units.
