Do we really need a new thread each week when a young player plays a dominant game. Last week it was the balta thread embarrassing richmond supporters, this week its this thread embarrassing stkilda supporters.

For God sake people, keep it in your pants
Harsh comparison

A bit more substance here- Unlike the Balta thread, I actually did some research and came up with some interesting stats about the subject player

And in the process demonstrated something about key forwards and their development

King was super impressive yesterday. The last quarter was a throwback to the 90s. There’s nothing more exciting than big key forwards ripping a game apart.
Plays like a 200cm Gary Ablett Snr. He won’t ever kick 16 goals straight like Plugger or Dunstan but I reckon he’s in for a few 8.8 games. Gets plenty of looks at the sticks.

Did you love his mark over 172cm Liam Baker better or the one in front of 18yo 3rd gamer Josh Gibcus? Or the one that he dropped and it fell in between his legs by complete miracle?

Or did you like his first 3/4s better when Tarrant and Grimes schooled him?

He is tracking really well but ffs, people getting way too excited about his last 1/4 yesterday. Start threads about him when he consistently does well against quality well stocked defences in big games.

FFS.

Let him just play a consistent year and then we can start making threads on him.

He’ll play a bad game and this thread will get bumped.
Hopefully this week

He’s kicked 4 goals or more in 4 of his last 7 games. Seems like the consistency is there.

He has also kicked 4 or more goals in 4 of his last 20 matches.

Jack Riewoldt and Tom Lynch between them have kicked 5 or more goals in 3 of the last 11 full length finals they have played between them, ie Lynch 1 of 3 and Riewoldt 2 of 8. And most people seem to see them as nothing special. 😉

Anyway, King like all other players will be put to the test over the course of his career. His rating would be correctly based on his ability to take on the best opponents in the biggest games.

The player rated the best key forward in the modern era, Lance Franklin has 94 goals + goal assists in 25 finals. But he has 14 goals + goal assists in his 5 Grand Finals, which is substantially down on his career average, though still very respectable.

Of course there are other elements to a key forward’s performance than just goals and goal assists. But I think the question to ask regarding someone like King is this: if when King enters his prime and he is playing on say Jacob Weitering, or Noah Balta or Sam Taylor or Haris Andrews in their prime in a Grand Final or Preliminary Final or other big game where the teams are roughly evenly matched, how will King go? For me, this is what will tell us where he fits in against the greatest key forwards of the era.

At this stage, there is no reason to believe Max King will not be able to perform well in these most telling situations, but it remains to be proven, and I am sure, we shall see.

Not sure the relevance of those 2 players to a guy who is 21 and played 40 games...
My point is that recently his consistency has improved, just like since the middle of last season his accuracy has improved. He is tracking very well and at this stage of his career he is comparable, if not better than the elite forwards of the game. Obviously there's a lot to play out, but he's already shown he can play well against the top defenders. 10 marks & 3 goals on Harris last year, 4 goals on Weitering too.

Not trying to play down what King achieved last year because he did well enough for a 3rd year key forward.

But Harris Andrews was well known to be below his best physically throughout most of 2021. The second key back for the Lions in that was Jack Payne so you never know if he may have been on King at times too.

The Blues were in malfunction and again it is not certain King was actually on Weitering with Liam Jones the other option. Weitering had 21 touches and 10 marks in that game too so it is not like King(3 marks) was marking all over him.

Johnno Brown "will be as good as Carey and Franklin"
Woah.
Great player.
Once Grimesy went off though, that's when he dominated.
correct. he dominated a washed up Tarrant.

King will be great, but need to see him do it against better defenders.

He didn't have a touch for 3 quarters until Grimes went down. Also helps when he draws frees for the slightest bit of contact.
Yeah he’s just super-lucky. Each one of the 33 goals he’s kicked in his last 12 games have been due to opportunistic height mismatches, the dudes he’s been playing on getting injured and having to go off, lucky free kicks and so-on.

Lucky lucky man is Max.

King was playing on both of those guys, I like how you say you’re not trying to down play King and then proceed to downplay him 😂.

Reminds me of Mitch Clark when he had some brief wonderful years as a key forward. Hopefully Max has a longer and more successful career.

Love this from Tigers supporters considering Grimes wasn’t even playing on him.

Grimes controls their defence and is an important intercept/third man up defender. Losing him helps King, even if not a direct opponent.
