Oh dear it seems we have had a little thread title change. 🤣

=7th Saints B & F, Saints finished 10th on the ladder. Probably about 10th or worse for average votes per game.

I don’t think this rates as elite PJays 😁

Tell you what seeing as how you are not too confident with stuff like this, I will let everybody know if and when Max “The Next Big Thing” King arrives at elite. So far, he is not even elite in his family. 😉

How do you compare King to Lynch?

I mean Lynch won Richmond’s averaging less then half a goal a game more over a season.

Lynch also cost Richmond a final.

Lynch was far and away the better of the two players in 2022. Take note of Lynch doing about 7% less time on ground per match average due to being subbed off injured 3 times. You would need to add around 7-8% to all of Lynch’s averages to correct for this. Apart from that we can just let the figures speak for themselves I think. Your “less than half a goal per game” is nowhere near accurate. It is well over a goal per game once you adjust for time on ground.

Lynch had a very strong year, comfortably stronger than an average Coleman winner, so it is a tough comparison for Max. But it does show he needs to find another level or two before we start declaring him elite.

As for Lynch costing Richmond a final, what you of course mean is he took a massive contested mark then kicked a shot so close to a goal the overturned result has since been controversial. He execution of hte kick looked near flawless, he was just slightly out with his alignment at worst. He kicked 3.2 overall, took 4 contested marks, and secured 7 contested possessions overall, he had 7 score involvements. He played on a decent opponent and had a very good performance overall.

Huh? What change?

I'm not generally a believer in conspiracy theories, but I'm inclined to wonder whether Brad Hill equalled King's votes to justify Hill's horrendous contract

After all, King was in the All Australian conversation mid season. Hill probably hasn't been anywhere near the top 100 AFL players at any time since joining St Kilda. Let alone the All Australian conversation at the halfway mark of a season

I don’t think this rates as elite PJays 😁
He had an elite stretch of 15-20 games spanning 2 seasons.

The 2022 season as a whole, no, not elite. But a step forward. Tracking nicely.

How many players aged 22 or under have kicked 50 goals in a season in the last 10-15 years? And taken 48 contested marks?

Did the thread title not change from something more effusive about Max King or have I imagined that?

Your theory about Brad Hill, just no, that is silly. Max King averaged 10.6 disposals(low) 0.7 tackles(very low) 2.7 goals + goal assists(around average for a number 1 target key forward) 6.7 effective disposals(low) 2.2 contested marks(high) 6.2 score involvements(highish). St Kilda would be pleased with his progress overall but that season is not worth a higher b & f finish. And your focus on Hill does nothing to meaningfully elevate King even if it was correct. If you remove Hill King would move from at best 9th on average votes per game to at best 8th.

Regarding the question as to how many players 22 or under in the last 10-15 years have kicked 50+ goals and taken 48 contested marks…

Franklin kicked 113 goals in 2008, contested marking stats were not kept.

Lynch got 68 goals + goals assists(King got 60 in 2022) and 43 contested marks in 2014.

Jack Riewoldt kicked 78 goals and took 54 contested marks in 2010.

Joe Daniher kicked 43 goals, had 10 goals assists and 53 contested marks in 2016 in an uncompetitive team. Taylor Walker in 2012 63 goals(18 assists) averaging 1.9 contested marks in 2012.

Aaron Naughton in 2022 kicked 51 goals(14 assists) averaging 1.9 contested marks.

Jeremy Cameron 63 goals(10 assists) in 2015, weak contested mark numbers.

Jaryd Roughead 75 goals(10 assists) in 2008 as a 21yo.

These are a few I could think of that had superior seasons aged 22 or under when compared to Max King 2022. He is in good company tracking behind these guys but he is behind them.

You could also argue Ben King’s 47 goals(7 assists) in 2021 was superior, playing in a weak team and one year younger.

Lynch cost Richmond the game.

Judging by your matrix we should also take the game off Max King when StKilda when they played in Cairns as that can't be counted.

Ok everyone let it be known ChistianBoy thinks Max King’s 2022 season was better than Tom Lynch’s 2022 season. 🤣

Whats your point though? Your the one that is banging on everywhere that King isn't going to make it. His numbers and the eye test suggest otherwise.

As good a Lynch was he cost Richmond the final.

Shocking break for King probably needing a shoulder reco and will be missing for 4-6 months. Saints not having a great deal of luck in terms of long term injuries at the moment.

My guess is King will be lucky to play half the season in 2023. 2024 will be his 6th year in the system and we should be able to fairly judge him at that point as he will be 23 turning 24 during the season, this is the age most key position players really hit their straps.

Even the longer estimate of 6 months is not too bad. I mean it isn't good, but at most that is 11 rounds into the season. Plus with it being a shoulder at least he can run and use an exercise bike to maintain fitness.

He could be back as early as about round 6 which wouldn't be too bad.

Feel for the kid, the two brothers have had a shocking run with injury.

Yep, absolutely terrible.

But surely both King boys should be heartened by Charlie Curnow and his amazing comeback 2022 season after missing two years (effectively) of footy yet still won the Coleman Medal..

Medical and scientific science keeps getting better and more advanced all the time.

Terrible luck for the young man. Him and his brother deserve a fair crack at it as they have the potential to become two of the best players in the game.

He’s arguably the saints most important player and will be irreplaceable. You need two quality key forwards to compete for a flag..he was the saints only option. They will struggle to kick a winning score without him.

Huge early test for Ross lyon as he’s going to have to change things up.

Thrown in too early imo
Totally agree.

I think the good news is the Suns recognised this when they brought in Chol and Casboult to help out.

Feel like Max has been thrown to the wolves at the Saints.

Also turns out Chol is a bit better than just a helper.
