He has bucket hands and the point where he grabs the ball when he’s confident and got that spring in his step is undefendable, if he can keep developing his strength and ability to not get knocked
Off a contest he has the ability tone Carey like in terms
Of building a whole club around him and being a top 4 side, he seems to have a great motor and could push up as a chf and be just as influential .

Pretty quiet 11 marks and 4 goals for Max this week.
That’s a good sign that he still finished with those numbers . I actually thought he was a bit off today was dropping marks he would normally eat when it all clicks for him his going to rip games apart that’s foreshore!

Was expecting much more from him. Popped up in junk time.
He was crucial early with a goal and another one he handed to Brad Hill on a silver platter with a beautiful kick after a strong mark on the lead outside 50.

But sometimes when watching King it's even the misses that illustrate his talent

There was a pack contest, it was hard to see, but it looked like 3 or 4 Hawks jumped at the ball, King missed the mark but it spilled to a Saint, who kicked to another Saint who goaled

It was a good illustration of Kings effect. Because of his height, length and athleticism he rarely gets beaten in a contest like that. Unless you illegally block him it's very difficult stopping him from at least getting one hand on the ball. The defense expends plenty of effort and manpower and usually the best they can get is a neutral result from the contest, but the ball spills and it creates opportunities for others. Saints have a bunch of talented small forwards- Gresham who's back and in great form, Higgins, Butler, Membrey roves them occasionally and did rove one beautifully today.

Mitch Lewis had three more scoring shots than Max today. 😉

Max with 4 goals, 2 goal-assists, equal game-high 9 score involvements, 7 marks inside 50, 17 disposals, 11 marks.

Without playing particularly amazingly, and getting triple-teamed at times.

Nothing wrong with King’s game. Just so happened Lewis, playing in a team who got slaughtered had 3 more scoring shots than equal second game high Max. You don’t have to get all mirror mirror on the wall about it. 😂

Have always thought it was a balls up from G.C not paring them up was the perfect situation and was starring them in the face .
I think it’s probably that they wanted to pair up Rankine and Lukosius. They probably thought Ben was a better chance of staying than either of the other two if they didn’t have a mate there.

Or Saints had more of a spread and Hawks really only had the one target, so the majority of their inside-50s went to Lewis while Saints had 5-6 other options, which showed as we had 4 players kick 4 goals. Would say it's expected Lewis got his opportunities. Good

FWIW, although it's the type of thing that doesn't get noticed or acknowledged.by the average footy fan - from what I saw, King was why Membrey was able to kick 4, and why the smalls such as Gresham and Hill were able to get so much space.

Teams have to double and triple team him. If you don't, he shown that he can tear you up.
But the catch of course is that if you do, then St.Kilda seem capable of using that to their advantage and kicking winning scores.

Not sure if it makes him a great individual player, but it certainly makes him incredibly valuable to his team.

How good will this guy get?

I think it's safe to say the new King of St Kilda has arrived.

The potential many people have been raving about for years has finally been unleashed more consistently, across the back half of 2021 and the opening rounds of 2022.

From where I'm sitting, injuries have always been the only thing that could stop this guy becoming an elite key forward and one of the very best players in the competition. But now, possibly earlier than even I expected, he's finally starting to prove it regularly.

Here's a question.

What do the following players have in common?

N Riewoldt
B Fevola
J Brown
M Pavlich
W Tredrea
J Roughhead
J Riewoldt
T Hawkins
J Kennedy
T Lynch
J Gunston
B Brown
J Darling

Apart from being the crème de la crème of key forwards over the past 20 years?

Answer:

1. They all averaged less contested marks per game over their careers than Max King is averaging so far in his career (2.12 per game)

2. None of them kicked at least 4 goals in 2 consecutive weeks within their first 41 games, ie: What Max King just achieved

Side note- Barry Hall and Buddy Franklin would've been on this list except they kicked 4+ in games 39 and 40, one game ahead of King who did it in games 40 and 41. Jeremy Cameron did it in games 31 and 32. Taylor Walker matched King with 4 in games 40 and 41.

Key forwards usually take 4-6 years to start consistently playing great footy. This is King's 4th season (although he missed most of 2019 rookie year with an ankle injury, only playing 5 VFL games). Harry McKay is a good example of this- 58 goals last year in his 6th season, previous best was 26.

The frustrating thing for me as a St Kilda fan, is that I can see King's trajectory unfolding before my eyes, but I don't see any other under 25's at St Kilda who look likely to become elite. So I'm not sure King will have the teammates around him to make the most of his immense abilities. (Although optimistically Clark, Gresham, Coffield and Higgins have shown flashes of brilliance. You never know).

Still this thread is about Max King not the Saints.

How good will King eventually become?

And how will he go this year? Challenge for the Coleman?
Didn justin koschitzke have an even better 4 game run kicking 17 goals at roughly the same age.

just wait a little longer first before posts like this. enjoy it. But maybe wait for a half a season of it first Before we start declaring him the gun foward of the next generation,

Exactly. It’s no wonder St Kilda are the highest scoring & most efficient team going inside 50 as it stands. 16th team for inside 50s with a poultry 48 per game despite piling on the goals. King brings plenty of others into the game due to the attention he cops. The kid is only 21.

It's good to see Saints fans so excited. As the Willy / Biff Loman of Australian sport, fantasy and going early is part of St Kilda's survival despite failure superceded by more failure.

“Pop! I’m a dime a dozen, and so are you”

Ah, so he was not even the main forward in his team, he was only one of four equal main forwards….😁

Correct

He kicked 17 goals, with 16 contested marks in 4 games as a 22 year old in 2005, his 5th season. He was pinch hitting in the ruck too. (40 hitouts in those 4 games).

However, I don't think he ever put a 13 game stretch together that rivals King's last 13 games

Grant Thomas ruined kosi career playing him through back injury’s and trying to turn him into a ruckman the bloke had the potential to be a champion

So that’s you’re measuring stick now? Geeze you love to move the goal posts so King doesn’t look as good.

Jeez, I post the odd sobering FACT here and there and you guys try to make me out as some sort of Max King despiser. 😂

Well, if I am needed to play the role of the pantomime villain, here are a few of my main criticisms of Max King:

1. He is not even the best goal kicker in his family….he has never kicked more goals than his brother Ben in a season where both have played.

2. He goes missing for large chunks of games. Apart from 5 minutes against Fremantle, one quarter on a novice player v Richmond and some junk time goals what has he done this year? Ok, he has taken 11 contested marks, but apart from that what has he done? Ok, he is averaging 15 disposals per game, but apart from that what has he done…?

3. He looks like a failed science experiment. Cartoon character facial features placed on a comically shaped frame. Unmarketable. Unless you are selling cartoon strips.

4. campaigner missed an easy snap from the top of the square once that would have landed me a massive multi. AND in rd 1 this season kicks 1.3 when I backed him for 3 goals. Since then, 12.5 with 4 majors in each game. He can go and get ****ed.

5. In winning his only club goal kicking award he finished a wafer thin 4 goals ahead of no less illustrious a goal kicker than Tim Membrey.

Tim Membrey. 😂😂😂

6. One of the worst judges of football on Bigfooty, PJays has an erection over him. This is something that relegates M King to the AFL scrap heap with approximately 99.9999% certainty. 😍

Lost me at ‘hasn’t kicked more than his brother’ 🤣😂

In the short/medium term, I think his development will depend somewhat on the Saints having a strong forward line around him. Currently it seems to be working well with Membury there, one of Ryder/Marshall rotating as another tall, Wood chipping in, etc. Spreading the load makes it much harder for opponents to double-team and aggressively go after him personally.

If it gets to the point where he is forced to bear the KPF load alone, and it becomes a game of "Just bomb it long to him and expect him to outmark 3 other blokes", it might get very difficult for him.

In time, he may well develop into that Hawkins-like forward, where he really can dominate a forward line by himself and the Saints really can "Bomb it long to Maxy". But for now, it's important that the Saints help protect him by opening up as many different avenues to goal as possible.

A 22 goal effort with multiple 3-4 goal kickers looks like they're on the right track so far.

Id be leaning toward the huge head injury. Never really was the same after the giansiracusa bump, and had blood and brain fluid coming out his ear on field and wasn't responsive. He has spoken in retirement about the impact, and how he still is impacted by the injury to this day. Did well to contribute as much as he did and play a long career
