’s 22nd birthday recently. So he is not a little 21yo any longer he is now a big 22yo. With all the privileges and responsibilities that entails. . Happy birthday Max “Elite, but out of form” King.

Since Max’s career run of 5 games at the start of the season, where he recorded 19 goals + goal assists in 5 breathtaking matches, how is he getting on?

Well, not too bad, for a little 21yo. Not necessarily outstanding for a big 22yo. For an elite key forward, he has had a pretty forgettable half season overall, especially seeing he was or is the most targetted forward in the AFL.

Last 11 games:

Goals + goal assists - 26 average 2.36 per match somewhere around average or below average for an AFL key forward who is his team’s prime target. Way below elite.

Goals - 24 2.18 average pretty standard really.

Goal Assists - 2. 0.18 average per game. Incredibly low. Max Max Max you really should share the ball a bit more, if you can get it that is.

Disposals - 98(32 of which he has turned over, woops). Averaging under 9 per game. Below average.

Contested Possessions - 63. Averaging 5.72 per game. Average at best.

Contested Marks - 27. Averaging 2.45 per game. Tidy.

Score Involvements - 57. Averaging 5.18. Average at best.

Score Involvements bar his own shots at goal….- 14. Averaging 1.27 per match. Abysmal. (Hawkins averages 3.7, Walker 3.9, Cameron 3.5, Franklin 3.4 for example.)

And finally…..taking his overall performance in 25 matches since his “elite” run commenced last season…..

25 games - 74 goals + goal assists. 2.96 per game. Respectable. Definitely not elite.


So I am sure PJays will now admit he has gone early in anticipation of hopefully better things to come in future from prospective elite forward Max King

. Even taking him from his best point onwards his performance is now well below elite. So providing PJays concedes the validity of this assessment, we can bring this thread to a rest and come back if King actually looks like getting it done with the elite key position forwards of the competition.

Probably see Naughton dropping back to compete at times given the inclusion of Bruce so should be a decent test for the big man.

Needs to find a way to impact games when he’s not kicking goals too.

How many key forwards are there in the comp that are best 22? About 2 each team (36 total). So if 19 of them get 2+ goals a game it makes King look pretty average doesn’t it as he is in the bottom half.

Unfortunately, the job of the modern day key forward isn't necessarily to kick goals.

Be a target, create a contest, crash the pack, bring it to ground, straighten the team up, etc. etc. - this is their main aim. All the boring shit basically.

To me Max King is going perfectly well for a young key forward. I would be as happy as Larry to see him become elite ahead of his time. But as some of us suspected, this is unlikely. You could do worse than acknowledge that small but important point.

If he kicks 4 or 5 tonight and keeps the Saints season alive it'll be more evidence that he's elite

If he's not very influential it'll be further evidence that he's not elite yet

Well here is the good news Mick….Max King is highly likely to be a gun player. The slight downside is he is playing for St Kilda, so he is likely to peak at losing Grand Finalist, like almost all St Kilda legends. And just think of this. When King becomes a gun player, and the more moderate judges such as myself say, hey, Max King is a gun player, then you will KNOW he is a gun player. You won’t need to believe in something that isn’t real and present any more.

I will take that as you waivering slightly PJays. You seem to be questioning your own assessment now. Developing the ability to reflect on your beliefs and admit where you were wrong is a great step for you. If you keep this up you could be an elite poster before Maxy King is and elite key forward.

You need to be around the top 5 key forwards to be an elite key forward I agree with that. But it would surely be measured by average performance not by aggregate performance.

That doesn't make sense.

But regardless, I've seen them tonight 'target' guys on their own under no pressure, and miss them by 6 feet.

So yeah, I'd say being 'targeted' at St Kilda isn't exactly something you'd get excited about I'd you're a key forward.

I'd leave if I was him. I've said this before. It's awful to watch.
