I'm sorry if this has already been posted and I do understand that we have an expanded Bench at this time but this article in the Warnambool Standard really raised my eyebrows. It looks to me as if Max is a long way off Senior selection and that his Tendonitis is really causing him grief. I love watching him play and I believe he is a vital cog in the machine that is our premiership Defence. We always look stronger when he is out there doing the hard work. Lets hope he's over it soon. How much do you think we need him??????

Honestly , if its over use why is he playing in the 2's. He and we would be better off long term if he is sent OS for a holiday and told to come back in June when the grounds are softer. We don't need the power of Max now , Aug and Sept is when we will need him at his super human best

I'm sure the medical staff know what they're doing. Looking from this distance, it's impossible to tell.

...having said that, he was limping badly as he walked off from last week's game.:(

Max was critical in the GF, love his whole modus operandi, but how much has he left? Is this his last season? Age wise he's youngish. Body wise??
It's early days and he has a knack of making it by GF day.

I got problem tendons in my right knee its not as severe as tendonitis but even in its lesser form its not something that goes away from rest in a month or two.

You can take a year off and the knee can flare up again soon after you get back into it. Im sure they are just testing it at the moment trying to get him out there with minimal pain and inflammation, he will be out there on painkillers later in the season if neccesary though not too worried.

Rookey won't last much longer, his body is showing signs of breaking down. Surprised that he managed to play as many games in the previous few seasons as he has - always seems to be picking up little niggles here and there.

I think it'll be interesting to see how he slots into the current forward setup once he returns (assuming Pods is still featuring). I think we've definitely missed his presence within the forward line, particular his pressure on opposition 'quarterbacks'. For all the talk surrounding the new forwards (Pods and Duncan), neither has picked up Rooke's slack. I'd argue that the addition of Pods/3 talls setup (pun unintended) maximizes the need for Rooke's role. The flipside to our new height advantage is the opportunity for an opposition defense to run off our forwards at will. Our talls (Moons, Hawkins, and Pods) and current mid-sized forwards (Dog, Duncan, even Chappy) won't help an awful lot in that regard. This problem is exacerbated by the absence of Varcoe, and the current rotation system between the midfield and forward line that many of our smalls are involved in at the moment (Byrnes, Ablett, Chappy at times - their primary roles aren't as well defined in a defensive sense while in the forward half).

And this is all without taking into account his ability to both create space for the talls to lead into as well as split contests to create crumbing opportunities for the smalls.

I think Maxy is obviously very important to our forward line, but he shouldn't come back until he's fully fit. The patella tendonitis will probably need to be managed all season. From what I saw of the VFL on Sunday, he didn't look obviously injured (until he got hurt and went off), he just looked a couple of steps off the pace, as you would expect for all the fitness he needs to get under his belt, and the amount of ball work he's missed. I hope we give him time and don't put him in the seniors until he's ready to contribute 100 %. The business end of the season is what matters.

it's a tough call - with pods, mooney and hawkins all in the forward line is there even room for rooke, who plays somewhat tall? if those three and steve johnson are all on the ground i think the need is there for more ground-level fowards.

Max Rooke is made for september football, as long as he is up and firing then i dont see the need to rush him back.

I struggled with tendonitis in my left knee (and a torn ligament in my left ankle) through most of 2005. I was playing basketball for club and school 6 days a week thoughtout that year (which was the cause of the problem originally), and what finally shook the tendonitis was 4 months off from basketball mid-way through 2006.

I'm obviously no doctor, but if he's got tendonitis, rest would be the best option in my experience, to prevent it from lingering. Running and jumping (particularly on hard surfaces) doesn't do anything to help it. I don't know why you'd be pushing him through VFL games in April.

is there even room for rooke, .
Blasphemy ;). He doesn;t play tall, he plays sideways. Throwing himself...

His hardness at the ball/man will only increase in value as the season deepens, and bodies tire, into Winter and then September. No need to rush him back whatsoever it is only Round 5. Our fixture gets alot harder after an 'easy' start so that would be the perfect time to maximise.

Max doesn't struggle.

It is possible that the sight of those quivering around him gives you the misapprehension that he is not moving as fast as they are.

But seriously, if he was still hampered with injury, he wouldn't be playing VFL. He will be back soon enough.

It is my opinion that you need quite a number of home and away games up your sleave to be physically ready to be Mr September.
i agree.

let me re-iterate, there is no use rushing him back through the magoos in round 5, as long as he is back in the senior fold by round 16-17 i think he can peak for the finals.

i wouldnt expect more than a 10 game season from him, for maximum impact!

Max reminds me a little of Aaron Hamill, very high impact player, very effective, but hopefully he doesn't go out the same way with a completely knackered body.
