Really want to see Wolfman back in the side, I think we really miss his acts of hardness in the F50. The role of defensive forward last year was perfect for him. He would have been an excellent inclusion against Saints.

Then again - perhaps he can lie low until the finals, and then we can roll out a rejuvenated New Big Hairy Cat against the Saints (evil grin).

Get better Maxy!!

A friend of mine recently spied Max doing some rehab work in the pool and took the following as proof that Max is on track with his finals comeback.

Fear not for Max will rise again come September

Although I envision that Mad Max has retreated to a sea cave somewhere between Geelong and Warnaambool living entirely on washed up shark carcasses and fashioning social company from etchings in nearby rock....i would think that perhaps somebody may have seen him down at the club or at least (hopefully) running a lap or two?
They weren't washed up carcasses, he swam out and mauled them to death.

A fit Max Rooke is definitely in our best 22. Who he replaces I don't know! I hope he's right for the finals, because that GF effort alone got us over the line, and I couldn't see anyone replicating that hardness at the ball that he brings to our side. We need him to rip the saints a new one when we meet them in the finals whether that be a GF or otherwise.

Yep, was amazing that within his sea cave they still found the mauled remains of african lion and siberian tiger obviously sautéed amongst rhinoceros horn in an obvious attempt at a knee tendonitis remedy.

Where we miss Max is only obvious when we come up against teams like St Kilda and most likely Hawthorn this week....he is able to scare players like Hodge and Goddard into submission and also has the added advantage of actually being able to take a contested grab and kick a goal...hopefully he resumes some sort of training soon as i have not heard a word on this in about a month?

I think he has a fight on his hands for a spot, I'm not as definite as some others that think he is a walk up starter.

Straight swap Rooke for Stokes come finals time. Having Byrnes, Varcoe and Stokes in the one team will not work in the finals - they aren't physically big and strong enough to keep all three against sides like the Saints. Byrnes, Varcoe and Rooke is much more potent.

Completely agree with you Burto..... The three amigoes is not a viable finals strategy and I can't recall a succesfull premiership team with that many little guys (remember we also have Chappy and Gaj as effective smalls in attack when needed!). Max should come in if at all possible....Bomber seem to suggest 3 weeks again...which would mean Rnd 18/19, absolute last chance for him then.

I'm not sure he will be back in our best 22 for 1 reason i am not sure he will ever come fit again. Was just talking to someone a few days ago about it. And for some reason i think he may end up a similar fate as Egan. A bunch of surgeries and rehabs but with it never coming right. Haven't heard any real positives about him coming back at all this year. Which sort of brings me to think that he may retire at the end of the year maybe even without managing to take the field in the remainder of the year.

Which i obviously hope isn't so but it's the way i am thinking currently.

No i don't think that is the case with Tendonitis. It is just a condition which is painful for a significant amount of time, but can be ultimately be cured with rest. Ben Hilfenhaus (Australian Cricket Player) went through a similar thing and he missed the entire summer season - after the first test (and snaring a bag of 5!!) and has only just come back. Rooke may well be able to manage the injury without flaring it up this year, but with continued rest he may be over it completely next year. Although i still have not heard any real inside stories on his exact condition.

In a worst case scenario where the Max Factor is not fit enough for finals, I'd still like to see him in action comes September - possibly as a runner, a drinks carrier and just wondering around the boundary with 1/2 Cat. Just the sight of him out and about will spread fear and doubt into the opposition.

We have to be very careful to not become too top heavy. If Max is fit and I mean fit then he should at least be given an opportunity. But I can't see us playing a team with Ottens, Blake, Hawkins, Pods, Mooney and Rooke.

I even have doubts whether we can fit the first 5 mentioned above in the same team. If Hawkins is fit then Blake has to be vulnerable. Ottens, Mooney and Pods are really the only definites for me.

I would hate to be on the selection panel in September if all are fit and available. There will be a couple of disappointed boys.

agree, if Max is FIT

And of all those mentioned, the ONLY one not to have missed a game is BLAKE. He is the only certain starter. PODS also if fit , the others are all questionable for differing reasons.

If anyone thinks Blake is going to play 22 h&a games and then miss the finals, or the most important final, you can not be serious.

Could an injury free season have a bit to do with the number of games Blake has played? As opposed to the others mentioned. If fully fit and performing I reckon Rookie will be in. Proven finals performers are worth their weight in gold. Ottens is a lock and so are Pods and Moons if their form holds up. That leaves a choice between Blake or Tomahawk.

Having a fit Maxie in the bubble at stop plays, particularly against the Saints and Hawks, would be a real plus.

Rooke provides too much to the team and AFL finals are won with the stuff that he is made of. The argument about being top heavy is unjust - we have Varcoe and Byrnes at our disposal + either Chapman and Ablett capable of filling a small pacy forward role in combination of a midfield role. With SJ back and playing effectively as a creative lead up forward then there is also room for a player of Rookes calibre who acts in the defensive capacity.

I think carrying three small forwards in Stokes, Varcoe and Byrnes is dangerous. As we have seen when we are down or playing in close matches, it is not uncommon for them to have little to no influence. Not to criticise, all three are fantastic players, its just i think we are better served with a Max Rooke in the forward line.
