What's so hard to understand about this case?

It was a fair body-to-body bump within 5m of the ball when the player had every reason to expect contact. The whiplash effect of the bump lead to a head clash and a broken jaw, that's just an unfortunate accident.

If the bump was with the body making direct contact to the head then suspend him, but it wasn't. Get over it.

Agreed, if it wasn't for the broken jaw, would it have even gone on report?

Look all im saying is how can the AFL originally give maxwell 4 weeks and then reduce it to nothing today? There are only 2 possible reasons for this change of decision.
1 They have just realised he plays for Collingwood
And 2 Eddie McGuire and the AFL hadnt meet each others financial agreements until today.

That little prick AA is on SEN saying if the rule needs rewording to protect the head at all costs then they will do it. Also said that their position hasn't changed and that has been the case for 2 years and if they need to make changes to continue that they will.

Good end result, part of the game.

I am firmly in the camp thinking this will not change the AFL hierarchy for the better. They will find ways to take control again and continue their crusade.

As some have said don't think this will be any kind of landmark decision, more so will possibly lead to more complex cases from both sides in future cases. We'll see cases with opposing views on "duty of care" and I kind of believe that the AFL will always take the view that injuries = no duty of care, and even contact = no duty of care, when it is cleary just part of the game.
For the club/player to then have to argue against absolutely wrong cases brought against them by the AFL is just stupid.

I realise someone has to police the game, but is it too much to ask for the AFL to be a bit more, it's a pretty poor thing with all the us V them they are continuing to breed.

Ha. Just posted before reading this. I was stating the obvious clearly but damn it is still annoying to hear this from AA.... sigh

yep the problem is its only the nab cup... now they will re word everything so the bump is gorn.... I hate how they can just change the rules/regulations without consulting the players. You dont see soccer changing rules every 3 seconds, either basketball. Cricket has and look what a farse it has become.

How were there 3 outcomes? The MRP and the tribunal reached the same findings.

You actually are correct but I was just breaking it down as there were three stages in this entire saga and in each of them the penalty was different.

The charge went from 3 weeks via the MRP(taking into consideration early guilty plea) to 4 weeks after tribunal found him guilty to zero after the appeals board overuled their decision.

How can there be such a large contrasting difference in the outcomes? Somebody needs to be held accountable because all it took was some common sense, which is the way it should have been dealt with in the first place.

Instead, the MRP and tribunal wanted to feel important after a 6 month vacation, play ring around a rosy, waste everybody's time and in the process lost some serious credibility and faith in a system that was designed to rule out inconsistencies.

What would your view be if Dale Thomas copped a broken jaw and ten weeks out as the result of a similar bump from an opposition player?

My view would be to wish him a speedy recovery.

The bump was not illegal. It was fair-game and the result of an accidental headclash. It is a contact sport after all.

Also note, you cannot compare McGinnity to Thomas. Thomas is a regular player, so it would be more of a loss but nonetheless something the club would need to live with.

What if a star player from your team was on the other end of the bump and ended up with a broken jaw in the NAB CUP? like Ablett, Hodge, Judd, or Richo...?
I think the outcome would have been QUITE different...
