Maxwell retires from ODI's

It's hard to summarise my feelings about Glenn Maxwell.

He helped us win two WCs with crucial innings (vs SL in 2015 & AFG in 2023), but ultimately you feel like his talent wasn't fully fulfilled.

Maybe it was because his talents were so freakish - he combined Andrew Symonds' fielding and off-spin with Afridi's strike rate and David Warner's switch-hitting. He was probably the first 360 degree batsman - able to exploit the entire field with his shots, no matter how ridiculous. I mean, reverse scoops predated Maxwell, but not reverse pulls into the crowd. His fielding was brilliant - up there with the best I've seen. And his offspin was handy, but somehow he was less effective than Andrew Symonds (maybe era-dependent; maybe didn't get as much bounce).

He should also have played more Tests - he performed quite well in IND 2017, made some useful contributions in BAN, but was then dropped, even despite us lacking decent batsmen in 2018/19. I suspect he was dismissed as too mercurial, which was unfair, but admittedly he and Smith never had a good relationship.

Anyway, thanks for the good times, Glenn.

There’s a bloke from South Africa that might have a bit to say about the first 360 degree bit but yes you’re pretty spot on with the gist of it I think

Yeah good post.....always what could have been

Great to watch when he was on

One of my favourites moments was in the shield...Jhye bowling heat bouncers Maxi kept on hooking...great contest

I have said it before and will repeat."Biggest waste of talent I have seen"should have played more test cricket.Selectors focused to much importance on him playing white ball cricket and rarely got the chance to play shield cricket.Similar with T20 and 1 day they focused on him batting in the later overs and the message was need quick runs.People also forget what a brilliant fieldsman he was and his handy spin bowling.
lmfao.
You should ask him out.
Offer the most splendid dinner, and a five star hotel room.
