finger point dropped from avg 56 points p game in 2010 to only 15 in 2013. Thats a big drop off no wonder the back line were so shit.
Flailing of the arms dropped from 14 p game in 2010 to only 6 in '13.. Massive drop in arm flailing. No wonder heater got off the leash.
Spud acts increased from 8 p game in '10 to 15 in '13 that's massive potato

i think we all know pendles is '14 skipper. New start, new captain. Not just the symbolic part though, as we all know Maxy's not consistently best 22 anymore, especially as the style of play changes. He had some shockers this year

but of course he sticks around for at least one more year, for cover, for leadership, for experience and for bringing on the young'uns. then he becomes part of the coaching setup.

we love him - best average player ever to be a premiership as skipper. BUT we would not have done it without him. Gawd bless 'im
 
Im not gonna smash him. I will always love Maxwell for leading us to Premiership glory and how he led the club through good times and bad. The way he spoke and presented to everyone outside the Collingwood sanctum was first class.
He got 100% out of what he had as a footballer and thats all you can ask.
The time has come however where he needs to give up the captaincy and play for his position in the side.
I still believe he is in our best team but he is at the crossroads now.

Agree with all this but feel sad saying it.

He's been a legend for us as skipper and I really think we owe him hugely for 2010.

Absolutely. Yes he has flaws as a player but he has attributes that other guys in the team dont have which balance it out. I will never knock him.

i dont know if we 'owe' him. he owes us nothing certainly, and will live on with that glorious title 'premiership captain'. but he also needs to be mindful that we as fans expect the best 22 on the park every week and past glories are not a selection criteria.

he should not become our 2014 dog to kick week in week out. unlike sinclair he has no scope to improve.
bow out before the good name of maxwell is diminished any further.

i dont know if there any other 'rookie drafted premiership captains' out there. it says a lot about his character to succeed without necessarily the greatest skills.
 
Night before the Grand Final, I watched the 2010 grand finals. Maxwell was immense and it was good to see and confirm just how important he was to our team back then. Comparing that year, with current output, it's quite obvious that he is not the same player he was, and how quickly the game changes and goes past certain players.

He certainly still has a role at our club and will forever be respected for his style of leadership which has had many detractors from outside the club, but a style which has earnt him much admiration from people within the club, and that's all that matters.

My personal opinion is that he is going to struggle to hold his spot this year. That is a GOOD thing. It means our kids are developing, and for him to have a spot in the 22 it means he has to play good footy, which if he does, improves our team - so it's a positive (or just the way I'm spinning it.)

I guess it can depend on what role Bucks has in mind for Reid. If Reid is too play back and Brown & Keeffe are to take the key posts, with Marley and Toovey on the smalls, then Reid will play our Josh Gibson role, and it doesn't really leave a spot for Maxwell. We need someone to run and carry and create which I presume would be Seedsman to take the 6th spot.

Our backline was easily scored against last year. And when teams got a run on, they scored goals quickly and in numbers. We also lacked rebound, so getting a settled back 6 is a huge task this year.

i know what you meant swooop. likewise im trying to point out that i dont want to see that love & respect diminished by him playing too long and becoming the dog of 2014.
 
Unfortunately football fans are fickle and short minded. I found myself absolutely abusing Maxwell last year when he would fall over, lose a one on one, kick a helicopter, punch instead of mark etc. When I know I should be saying 'this bloke is a premiership captain, show some respect.'

he's a driven bloke though, that's for sure. How good of him would it be if he retired and used his leadership skills in the VFL for 2 years. Now that'd be selfess and club orientated :)

Its the classic loyalty v the professional benefit to the team thing. Perhaps those in charge need to utilise his leadership skills & passion in a better way. If his playing isnt up to scratch anymore, maybe we should see him doing an off field, assistant/specialist coaching job. In the end its all about the best 22 with the best dozen backup & developing players.
Tough maybe, but thats the way of the professional footy world now days.
 
He's been exposed a bit this year, which I think can be put down to a few things.

Our mids not doing enough defensively and injuries making our backline play out of position.
When the ball is coming in so easily it makes it difficult for the boys down back, especially since opposition teams have worked out how to isolate us.

However, I think now is the right time for him to hand over the Captaincy.
Like many have said, he'd do a great job of leading and developing the boys in the 2's as horrible as that sounds.

Could he play as the third tall forward? Increased pressue in the forward line with the added benefit of moving him away from defence.

would i assume the days of retiring the tall to the forward pocket are long gone ?

either you are good in your spot, or youre not.
