Maybe we can give him a run as a tagger? Now I'm not saying on the small fast onballers but the Mitchells/Kennedys/Watsons of the world. It was a long time ago but I'm sure we all remember hsi Job on Scott Thompson back in 09. He might need to reinvent himself next year and this could be it.

As for being Captain I think its time to give it away. There could be a chance he doesn't make our best 22 at some stage of the year and the media will jump on him. No need to do that it a Collingwood captain.

I was waiting for you. Do you even support pies?

Please go away again

Well there is NO question about actually "supporting" the Pies. His very actions demonstrate that he doesnt support the team. The question is whether he "follows" the team in the way a 5 year old might...

You get the feeling this thread is going to pop up a number of times this year.

Personally I would prefer a defence with Reid, Keeffe and Brown as the talls...as opposed to having Maxy in there. I think Reid is such a good reader of the play and he can easily play the floating role and is also better man on man.

I think until Toovey comes back that Maxwell has a spot.

After that, he may be fazed out a little bit.

Think you're on the money there DaVe86

The important part is he hands the captaincy over, rather than has it taken off him, or dropped whilst he is captain, which even the most anti Maxwell people, would agree wouldn't be fair on a great Collingwood person.

After the retirement of Burns we named the best captain as our captian. A true reflection of where we were at the time is that he beat Fraser for the job. That is a scaey proposition but we really did lack leadership at the time and Maxwell was the right man for the job. I admitre Nick for his application and leadership and I am sure he played no small part in bringing a premiership to our club in both his on and off field capacities. He deserves to be forever remembered as a Collingwood premiership captain along side Tony shaw and all the other blokes none of us can actually really remember but for ledgend (sad in itself).

We no longer have the vacume of leaders and leadership we had when Burns retired. I think it is time to make the call and relieve Maxwell of the cataincy. Pendlebury is the obvious replacement. Unfortunately I aslo think it is time for Nick to call it a day on his playing career. His place in the side won't stand on playing merit alone in 2014 IMO. It isn't right that you are forced to either play your ex premiership captain out of sympathy or have him run around in the seconds but that is where it is right now IMO. Maxwell will play every game he is fit for but not because he is the best for the postition he will occupy.

We are exiting blokes that can play because of who they are keeping blokes that shouldn't for the same reason.

Maxwell will play at least 2 games next year to join the 200 game club!

Can't add much else that hasn't already been said. Great leadership but not in best 22 on skills alone anymore but then the side (and list) are selected on more than just skills.

Maxwell has a giant dick, a really lucrative contract and a Premiership medal.
Along with his realistic view of his own abilities I reckon he'll get the transition right.
The club will, if necessary make it's views known to Maxie, but I'm betting Maxie will get the jump on them, as, like most on this board, they underestimate his intellect and ability....but not so much as some of the gormless plebs who think they have some right toan opinion from behind their anonymous keyboards.
You know the type....the ones who never even played a junior game of any note.

The gutless sniper types.

**** you all and good evening from me, ungracious suckers of uneducated ****.:D:thumbsu:

Yes. We must get Maxy to 200 games. What a great servant he has been.

I think with the whole transition phase we are going through a change of leadership would be good for the team. However, Maxwell is still a great leader on and off the field and it will be hard to replace the guidance and motivation he has provided us with. I see Pendles as a lead by example type leader, he doesn't seem like the kind of bloke that could give a really rousing speech.

While Maxy was never a real star on the field, he certainly lead by example through his one percenters, training and hardness in a contest. And by a few accounts was an excellent mentor to the younger guys and could really provide motivation for the team.

The only player I could see on our list that might provide the same leadership would be Luke Ball, but he would be a short term option at best and it makes sense they will go with Pendles.

Maxwell should not be captain next season, we want to move forward with a new ethos. However, he could still be best 22 if he has to play for his spot. He would also be a decent vice captain or member of the leadership group to help mentor Pendles into his new role.

Maxy handing over the captaincy to Pendles certainly symbolizes that we are ending one era and moving forward into another.

It's exciting! Good time to be involved or a supporter of Collingwood. Can't wait for 2014!

Exactly.... and rumour has it that David King has conducted clinical trials and established that the Pies will be a 3.2 goal better side with Pendles as the Captain instead of Maxwell. Evidently the results indicate that the new leader will also result in 20 minutes more sunshine in Melbourne and the end to world slavery as well. You can't argue with evidence like that...

If it adds a 3 day weekend as well then I'll get Kingy's name tattooed on my rod!!!

I think Maxy's time as captain is probably up, and it makes sense for Pendles to take over, while Maxy stays in the leadership group.

However, I think he still has a role to play in our back 6, at least to start the year off.
For those who are saying he should be dropped to VFL, I would like to see your structure of our back 6.

Personally - I think it is rare that we will play all 3 talls down back together... and will probably see either Reid in the forward line again, or Keefe missing out.
Toovey and Marley take the two small defensive roles, as long as recovery/court goes their way.

And if Harry stays on the wing, there's no-one else who I think would be a garaunteed spot ahead of Maxwell. (Goldsack's the likely one to take over his role, and though I love what he offers as a utility, I dont think he's shown the consistency down back to be a garaunteed pick in defence each week).

I dont think he should be a garaunteed pick, and he will need to earn his spot each week (as should everybody), but I think he is a good enough defender, both 1:1 and as loose man, that we will be better with him in the side rather than just dropping him suddenly.

(having said that - if one of the youngsters like Oxley or Frost show enough to be able to consistently offer more than Maxy, then of course they would deserve to take his place... I just dont see anyone being able to do that just yet)

Seedsman Oxley Frost Young Goldsack Sinclair Maxwell OBrien Reid Maccaffer are all options to play alongside Brown Keeffe Williams Toovey. Keeffe will not miss out on selection. He'll either be back (mostly) forward (occasionally) or ruck (rarely). Maxwell is not guaranteed to be in that best six, although with Shaw gone O'Brien up the ground and Toovey returning from injury I'd expect him to get first dibs at it.

It's a hard call because his leadership is probably the only thing keeping him alive. He doesn't really offer a reliable third man up option anymore, he rarely wins one on ones (in the air and on the ground), and his disposal efficiency and run isn't damaging enough to be considered a rebounding defender. I feel our best 6 defenders would be Williams, Brown, O'Brien, Seedsman, Reid and Toovey. Maybe they should spare him and give the captaincy to Pendles, then the decision wouldn't look so harsh. I highly doubt they'll leave him out though.
