His biggest asset is his hard leading, as the fastest player in the team.

But what isn't unusual, he hasn't been played in the that position for half a year. It's just rubbish coaching to not have someone playing to their strengths and fulfilling roles where their weaknesses are exposed.
To true ,he,s a forward flanker, not key position and at the moment certainly not a midfielder, had me pulling my hair out seeing him struggling trying to be something he,s not.

He just (so far) isn't that great a player. I thought he would be something more than what he is but his career has stalled a bit. He is comparable to Ben Mckinley in stats, with a i think a little bit more forward defensive pressure. I have compared last years stats here as McKinley only played two games this year due to injury i think.

Unless Mayne lifts his game he is headed for mediocre-dom

Where he gets positioned can't be blamed for poor skills. If playing out position messes with his head then htfu.

My understanding of most coaches expectations are that most players should able to do at least 2 jobs.

Chopper has been given a chance for everyone to see if he is capable of being a swing player.
Good move by the coaching staff. They'll have all summer to get him on the place he should be.

Fwiw I reckon he'd make good backman. We need someone to cover for Grover probably in 2013.

Unfortunately that's quickly becoming Harvey's trademark.

If he was at North in the 90's he probably would have played Carey in the ruck.

Such a moron! That was my prediction of one game loser. Oh and it was right after all so it seems you are the one with no idea what you are on about. I still went to the game, enjoyed it and lost my voice before half time. Sounds like you think way too much of yourself. So why don't you leave the posting to people who actually understand Footy! Ok Muffin?

I like this post.

You now get to sit next to Clay on the orange ignore bus.

I have no time for people like you.

The truth hurts. Fine by me, I'll actually be able to concentrate on talking to people with valid views and opinions on Footy.

That's JungleMuffin for you.

Ignoring someone on the internet is weak in itself. Announcing it like anyone is supposed to care is just sad.

"Oh boohoo, a bloke who pulls his dick out in public and thinks it's funny isn't going to read my posts, whatever will I do?"

Well i'm going to stand by mayne. Seemed to a have niggling injury in the later part of the year. His start to the year was awesome and at one stage was leading the comp for pressure inside 50.

No one hits the contest as hard as him and he kept goddard quiet in our game against the saints. Our forward line was rubbish and to put the blame on him is ludicrous, he shouldn't have the best defender on him week in week out.

Perhaps hoping he might have been more damaging this year however not really his fault. Has been playing under more trying conditions than last year and like a number of players has tailed off from a top start to the year.

His kicking hasn't been as bad as all that. Technically he is one of the better set shots in the club(not saying a great deal) and has had a couple of really poor days. However he does seem to be shooting from wide angles much of the time- rarely misses by much. Not too worried from the goal kicking respect.

I don't see it as a problem players being put in a variety of positions from a growth point of view. Finding out weaknesses is a good thing so they can be targeted. The downside is it doesn't help you win games in the short term.

Has improved this year and remember he is only 22 which means he is still a kid.

Apologise for interrupting the shit slinging match please feel free to carry on at your leisure.

Yeah to be fair to Mayne I'm sure I've heard other players refer to the fact that he was being kept in cotton wool during the week.

It sounds like he's been carrying something that's been restricting his training.

I think Mayne will benefit from a healthy list. Too often he has had to push further in to the midfield which is not his position. He has great tackling pressure but his decision making under pressure is not good. He is a 3rd tall forward so will also benefit from Pav staying in the forward line.

Look how much better he was at the beginning of the year when Kep was taking the #1 tall defender. Ok, his kicking yips were the talk of the internets but he was presenting and getting in to good scoring positions.

As will I. I'm a big fan of chopper and he is best suited to the 3rd tall role, something that hasn't occured for a long time now, playing him as a FF or primary target is terrible mismanagement.

Also not forgetting, he was a 3rd rounder in a weak draft, IMO considering this it's unreasonable to think he's going to be some sort of superstar, has definitely exceeded expectation.

Some very fair points here. You don't need a team full of stars to win a premiership.

As a thought exercise, Freo fans should do yourself a favour. Look at one of St Kilda's game day team lists.

FF Jarryn Geary Justin Koschitzke Stephen Milne
HF Brett Peake Nick Riewoldt Adam Schneider
C Sean Dempster Nick Dal Santo Jason Gram
HB Brendon Goddard Sam Fisher Jason Blake
FB Sam Gilbert Zac Dawson Raphael Clarke
R Michael S. Gardiner Clinton Jones Leigh Montagna
I Ben McEvoy Jack Steven Dean Polo
S Farran Ray

There are some absolutely cod ordinary footy players in that list. There are a few champions in there, but a reasonable fraction of the guys in there are role players. They do their job. Don't have a ton of talent, but put in their all week in and week out.

If you look at raw talent, it seems hard to believe that a team composed of the above individuals can even get into finals, let alone make an impact. Which goes to show how important playing as a team, with a solid game plan that holds up under pressure, is.

Mayne is a more talented player than probably a third of the guys in that team.

If you line our best team up against those guys, there is no way on the planet that we should ever lose against St Kilda if the results were determined from talent and potential only. And they've gotten to two successive years of grand finals. If we use the off season to develop and drill a really solid game plan, and put our best guys in their best spots on the park next year we'll do some serious damage if we can keep them healthy.

A lot of work to do in the off season.

Quality post. I agree.

Yep. This multiple role carp BS is just that.

The best coaches and teams have plug and play tactics and strategies.

And it's been like that for 10 years.

You make the role for the player. Not the player for the role.

It's where a lot of posters in this thread are going wrong.
