Joel, I think the MCC/MCG will lose. The AFL will re-locate their scheduled games to Waverley (as their spokesman said, without footy the MCC don't exist) and that'll be that.

What do I think???

Well a Patrick Smith story about a letter purported to be sent to the AFL. Dare I say, What Letter?? This guy has a history of unconfirmed documents. (eg Geelongs racist recruiting)

But lets assume it is real.

It seems to me that the MCC is not looking to allow rival broadcasters access to AFL games. They are seeking payment for Ch 7 romping all over their stadium, therefore a cut of the broadcasting rights. Surely every ground operator would like the same.

My understanding is that all grounds have control over who is allowed into their grounds. But the have effectively leased the ground to the AFL on match day so even though they can stop Ch 7 from entering I don't think they can let anyone else in without AFL approval. That is the nature of a lease

Lets look at the "MCC & MCG Trust Conditions".

Equitable share of games:- There are 8 AFL grounds, (MCG, Colonial, OO, SCG, Gabba, FP, WACA & Subi) with 8 AFL games each week. Given that WA only has 1 game per week and that on average SCG & Gabba have only one game between them per week, & FP has only 1 game per week then each Melbourne based ground could have 5 games every 3 weeks. That would be equitable wouldn't it?

No games against the MCG gate:- A reasonable request and one that is given to FP and probably some other grounds. Problem is if no telecasts were allowed against any gates then Melbourne viewers would rarely get a telacast. According to the previous condition there would be 5 Melb games each week. So that they dont clash we would have Friday, Sat & Sun night, Sat & Sun afternoon games. So when would the telecasts be?

Minimum attendance 42000:- So what happens when the Roos play the Power? do the AFL have to drag people off the street and pay them to go in?

Virtual & Internet advertising and telecasts:- A new product that has no real current arrangement. This must be nutted out by all Clubs, Grounds and the AFL in a round table type meeting. Unknown territory for all of them really.

Fees to be paid for access, cleaning etc.:- Sounds reasonable I suppose but who will really end up paying the fees? Yep, the public. Up will go admission prices to cover it so you & I will pay those fees.

I don't have any real gripes with the other conditions as they are really only cementing current arrangements. The minimum 1 MCG final each week will not change until there is an all SA or all WA final, if ever.

I just hope they keep the big picture in mind while negotiating, otherwise the public will suffer.

Sorry it is such a long post guys.
